Belgian here to answer the dreaded question about the fries! The "French" in french fries is actually the method of cutting the potatoes. Much like when you french veggies in sticks, this is the same for potatoes. In that sense, french fries basiccly means fries that have been cut in sticks! Also, hate to admit it but, the first ever french fries recorded where... indeed french T_T (First cooked in Paris to be precised) But make NO mistake! Belgium do it best!
