- There’s been a lot of fear mongering about the cost of Bernie Sanders’s health care plan. Time to set the record straight. Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Single-payer national health insurance, also known as “Medicare for all,” is a system in which a single public or quasi-public agency organizes health care financing, but the delivery of care remains largely in private hands. Under a single-payer system, all residents of the U.S. would be covered for all medically necessary services, including doctor, hospital, preventive, long-term care, mental health, reproductive health care, dental, vision, prescription drug and medical supply costs.
The program would be funded by the savings obtained from replacing today’s inefficient, profit-oriented, multiple insurance payers with a single streamlined, nonprofit, public payer, and by modest new taxes based on ability to pay. Premiums would disappear; 95 percent of all households would save money. Patients would no longer face financial barriers to care such as co-pays and deductibles, and would regain free choice of doctor and hospital. Doctors would regain autonomy over patient care.”*

No Cenk, this won't convince anybody. You need to explain it in terms they understand: Bernie's single payer system could pay for between 2 to 5 Iraq wars over a ten year period.

Polls show that the majority of Americans support single payer, including about 80 percent of Democrats, a majority of independents, and, in a recent Quinnipiac poll, a majority of Republican voters now, as well. So I think many people do understand the issues - the problem is our political system which has just been infested with these corrupt interests. We need to get these politicians and their dirty money OUT - and we need to vote in real ordinary Americans who will represent OUR interests in Congress and pass universal health care like every other 21st century developed nation.
What most people seem to miss is that universal health care works preventatively and would save lots of people from having to go through expensive treatments.

You guys are exactly right about the preventative (lower cost) focus vs profit based system. When making profit, and protecting the profit is your goal...look at C-sections as an example. Doctors do them at an alarming rate, it's not to make more profit, but to protect the hospital from liability. It's far more costly, and not in the best interest of the patient.
What rottenmonkey seems to miss is that universal health works preventatively and would save lots of people from having to go through expensive treatments. Universal health requires eating health, exercise, no smoking, no GMO foods, and to stop eating around the clock. So called health insurance will not prevent people from screwing themselves.
If only FDR had lived post-WW2. The US would already have universal health care.

Not sure about that. His successor Truman also wanted universal health care, but it was shot down as "socialized medicibe". Hell even Eisenhower and Nixon wanted universal health care.
In fact. go back to the 1910s, when European countries first began setting up social insurance systems for their workers, there were proposals for that in the United States. The private insurance industry and unions that offered health benefits to their members shot it down.

I was actually pretty lucky. I was in because of an allergic reaction to an immune suppressant that was prescribed to me to help with my Crohn's disease (which it now turns out I may not have) but once they got me stabilized, I was fine, just had to stay in the hospital for 3 days for tests. my bill was around 20 grand without insurance, it was about 3 grand with insurance. In the grand scheme of things, I know it's chump change compared to what others have had to deal with, but still...never want to do that again.

+KILLKING110 Take into account that Obamacare isn't exactly getting the funding they actually need since there is no single payer system at the federal level so paying doctors is in some ways hard for them financially. What I'm talking about is the wait time of Canadian healthcare, which is not even that great compared to the efficiency of some of the European countries.
TL;DR can't compare Obamacare with an actual single payer system since the budget is vastly different.

+André Strassburger That isn't the whole picture, either. In most countries with socialized medicine, the hospitals are run by the state. That means they never have to run at a profit. They just get the money they need to keep up with the workload. There's no board of directors and circle of stock owners and investors who expect to make a killing off of the business. Consequently, they cost a hell of a lot less.

The only downside to that is how long you'd have to wait if you were to go to the ER, for instance. Take a look at our neighbors to the north, Canada. I've heard rumors that sometimes people are waiting upwards of six hours to be seen by a doctor as they have to go through eeeeeeeeeeverybody.

I live in the UK, and, trust me, a state run healthcare system is very efficient. Currently, we have our version of the Republicans in office who have all but privatised it, and, lo and behold, we have a healthcare crises.

I think you could've shown it a little better. The 6.2% is a reduced payroll tax that employers have to pay in lieu of health coverage. Yes, they could pass some or all of that off onto employees or customers but that's what they do now anyway.
The *2.2%* is the _only real difference_ regular employees will _see_ on their paystubs, so someone earning $50k before taxes will only pay $1100 in health taxes without paying any additional premiums or deductibles. That's huuuggge

I pay almost 400 a month in health insurance through payroll deduction. Why the hell would you not agree to replace that with a tax that would end up saving you a lot of money in the end?

It also ensures doctors are always paid. In the USA, an insurance company can refuse to reimburse a doctor for tests or procedures because they decide it wasn't necessary. This can leave the doctor footing the bill, which in turn drives up medical costs for everyone else.
As if the Government can't or doesn't do it already. Medicare does not guarantee reimbursement. Admin cost WOULD NOT be reduced, healthcare costs overall WOULD NOT shrink. Doctors would revolt against it, and you'd have the same situation you do with Medicaid, except it would DESTROY MEDICARE! Bernie thinks he can force doctors onto the plan by pairing it with Medicare, let me tell you doctors WILL NOT PUT UP WITH IT! Only reason doctors put up with Medicare now is because it's paired with private plans and only covers over 65s, they then recoup the loss from Medicare with higher costs pushed onto private insurers. I honestly don't care if my taxes go up to pay for single payer, I'm not a greedy person. However, publicly provided healthcare as a single means for doctors to earn income is not going to fly and is 100% dead on arrival.
+Jared Johnson You've noticed something that a lot of people miss. When Canada went to a single payer system in the 1950s the Doctors were massively opposed. The government eventually managed to persuade them, but you could not do it today. The reason is that not only the Doctors will be opposed. The big savings in single payer come by eliminating a massive number of jobs. The billing department in a Canadian hospital is only about 10% the size of the billing department in a comparable American hospital and there are also all of the lost jobs in the health insurance industry. With Doctors opposed and so many jobs on the line there is no way the US can go to single payer now.

There is a reason why Scandinavian countries, among many other progressive nations, have adopted this same model which Sanders wants to implement here in this so-called industrialized, first-world nation...
Thats not the reason, scandinavian countries are doing better (even tho declining in a lot of ways). The reason is the economic freedom they had.
It looks like Denmark and Sweden's healthcare is free at the point of use for everyone but I don't think Norway or Finland's is (though in Norway it looks like there's a cap of about 262.71 U.S dollars a year and after that people can get a card that allows them to get further healthcare free for the rest of the year, which could be a lot worse I suppose, and it's free for those under the age of 16).
In the U.K it's free at the point of use for everyone and at the moment in the U.K the highest income tax rate is 45% on earnings above £150,000 a year. The basic income tax rate is 20% on earnings between £11,501 and £45,000 (£43,000 in Scotland) a year and the middle income tax rate is 40% on earnings between £45,001 (£43,001 in Scotland) and £150,000 a year and there's a tax free allowance for those earning under £100,000 a year on the first £11,500 a year earned and for those earning £100,000 a year to £123,000 a year this tax free allowance decreases from £11,500 by £1 for every £2 earned until it reaches 0% tax free allowance, so those earning over £123,000 a year get 0% tax free allowance.
But the NHS is mainly paid through national insurance (which also goes toward things like the state pension etc) which usually gets deducted from your wages along with income tax unless you're self employed and at the moment national insurance is 0% on earnings between £490 and £680 a month, 12% on earnings between £680.01 and £3,750 a month and it goes down to 2% on earnings above £3,750 a month.
You have to pay £6 towards a prescription in England but prescriptions are free in Scotland (which I don't think accounts for all the £2,000 lower middle tax rate threshold as there are other things like not having to pay tuition fees etc in Scotland as well)...

When I visited him we went to see his wifes father and everyone said "O, Canadian, you got that communist health care. haha Later at dinner the father was saying hes 70 years old but cant retire. I asked him why and he said his health insurance was $1100 per month and his employer pays most of it and if he retired he would have to pay it himself. This really saddened me. Wake up America. Private health care costs a fortune because its FOR PROFIT. Public health care is a right and should belong to everyone. You know one reason that Canada is a relatively peaceful country is because of these public programs that take away peoples fears about costs of being sick or unemployed. I'm a Canadian citizen and have had Universal Health Care my entire life.
(Canada has had Universal Health Care since the passage of the Medical Care Act of 1966)
I have no idea what it's like to live in fear of getting sick and not being able to afford my medical bills.
Of course - I can direct you to numerous Canadian government websites that describe our Health Care System and how it works - but I'm sure you can do that for yourselves.
I can just summarize my Canadian experience with Universal Health Care in the following way - as a Canadian citizen ( or Permanent Resident) we are entitled to medical services in our province (Ontario) - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year in great hospitals and clinics, provided by excellent doctors and nurses. The cost for us - for this service depends on our taxable income and is anywhere between $0 and $900 maximum PER YEAR. This medical service is also available to us - whether we're employed or not.
What I'd really be interested to know is - how much does the typical American worker pay for Health Insurance premiums and co-pays and - do you get health care if you're not working?

+KlllrJay The USA needs to 'get over' the idea that they are the 'best' at everything. This is simply not true - no matter how many times you have heard it said. I understand the desire to think that the culture one was raised in is the ideal standard by which to judge all other cultures but this is self-deceptive.
Instead of waving a patriotic flag, all of us (me included) need to look to other countries and cultures to discern what is really the best; what is closest to ideal.
Canada's health care (and health care insurance systems) are not the best in the world (Northern European and Scandinavian countries are objectively better), but it IS better (because it covers everyone and the insurance premiums are affordable - often on a sliding-scale w/income), and more economical (it objectively costs less), than the USA.
Finally, doctors in universal, single pay systems, are often NOT motivated solely by money. This is true for nursing staff, etc., as well. Although doctors and nurses choose to leave Canada because they can earn more in the USA (or Saudi Arabia), most choose to stay in Canada :D

We have a similar system in Australia. You pay between 2-3.5% of your wage towards Medicare. We do have small co-payments for GP visits/x-rays etc, but it is very minimal, and people on a lower income don't pay at all.
Any treatment done at a public hospital is 100% free. As a general rule prescriptions are capped at $6 per.
You can purchase private health insurance for treatment at private hospitals, comprehensive for around $30pw. Totally not necessary, but does help to shorten/eliminate waiting times for non-emergent/elective surgeries etc, and also partially covers you for dental, optometry etc. If you do pay for private cover, you also get a reduction in your medicare surcharge come tax time.
No-one here is having to sell their home because they get ill, nor forking out $10k+ a year for insurance, and we're not even close to the best health care system in the world. Definitely time USA caught up.

We have a quite a bit of doctor shortage here as they get paid more in the US, even though they already get paid excessively compared to some other developed countries..
As a middle class American, I would be taxed an additional 8.4% payroll tax. So for fun, I took my current salary and figured out how much that would be. I then compared it to what just my insurance premiums are (not including my employers portion they pay for my insurance, just what comes out of my check) and I would save close to $200 a month. That doesn't even bring up the savings I would have for copays and my share of CT scans or XRays or what have you. At a very minimum my income would essentially increase by $2400 annually...and my expenditures would go down by some amount.
You forgot to mention collective buying. if the USA bought drugs and med equipment in bulk, you would get more savings.

You forget that single-payer ALSO makes capped prices the law. Since there is only one place doctors/hospitals can send their bills to, it is standard under a single-payer system for price-setting. For example, an MRI session might be $1500 today. Under single-payer, the govt insurance can say "no way - we pay $500 for MRI's maximum"... guess what - the hospital can only bill $500... and guess what else? an MRI session only costs the hospital $150 in ACTUAL costs (use of equip, power, technician) per session. So they still make OBSCENE profit margins. The 11 million estimate is based on TODAY's prices of services... the inflated, majority-profit prices we seem to accept as normal. In fact, under single-payer, that 11 trillion should/would/could HALVE automatically, once price-setting takes place over 10 years. Look at Canada - 80-90% less for the same drugs and procedures ! Hello from Canada! I walk into my doctor's office, confirm my health card information (photo on card, name, address) and sit down. The wait is usually less than 20 minutes. Doctor examination happens, the doctor writes a prescription or writes up orders for tests if necessary, and I leave. The doctor makes all the decisions. They don't have to consult with any bureaucrats or services.

The problem with single payer healthcare is the problem of monopolies. The quality WILL go down. The price will, over time, go up. Lastly, over time many surgeries will be removed from the list of government covered procedures. As an example, my friend had knee surgery in Australia (he's Aussie). He also pays for private healthcare. He had to pay $6,500 for her 'free' surgery.

The government rather than making a profit off of you being sick, would actually put the administrative costs into making the health service more efficient, we do it in the UK, oh and also the government would supply more preventative drugs that are more generic, new drugs would only come into effect after years of research and testing to ensure first that it is needed, second if another drug can already do the required job, and third if the drug actually works, coz right now in the US insurance companies like to say that they innovate to create more effective drugs, trust me it is bullshit all they do is take the chemical structure of a drug and slightly alter it just enough to not be infringing on copyright of another drug and that the new drug still does its job

I'm a US citizen living in Japan where we have single payer. Besides the cost of the insurance being cheaper, there are caps on costs to medical services, so co-pays of any sort are usually minimal.

I live in Romania and my father pays 50$ per month medical insurance for him and my mother. Right now my mother is in hospital doing an isotop treatment for cancer and she pays an extra 2.5$ as copay. For minimum wage insurance is 10$ and 0 copay. Also inside the hospital medicine and food is free . I wonder how much money this tratment cost in the US with and without insurance. Without insurance a 4day treatment cost 500$ in Romania.

In Romania we have the fastest first response ambulance in the entire European Union ...it called SMURD and it is run by a Palestinian doctor and it is free including HELICOPTER rides for the real emergencies . I live in the suburbs of Bucharest and my Father is a cardiac ... SMURD came in 5 to 10 minutes in the suburbs and rushed him to the hospital . Everything was free including heart surgery and 2 stands to replace the arteries from the heart. He was insured but even if you are homeless you still do not pay since you are broke and they will not bill you .

ioan pena The only thing they see as a "Basic right" is stabilizing you so that you won't die immediately. I just won't go to the hospital anymore unless I am dying, even though I have health insurance.
Little story about the last time I went to the hospital, nothing important really.
Last time I went to the hospital, I had an Ear infection + Swimmers Ear, so the whole side of my head was swollen and my ear itself felt like there was a golf ball trying to force it's way out.
I sat in the ER for 14 hours before I was even seen, then had to sit there for another 4 hours in the room, because they expected the swelling to magically go down on it's own. After being there for 18 hours, the doctors forced something in my ear, dripped some antibiotic drops on it, handed me the rest of the antibiotic drop bottle, and told me they were done.
I spent the next week in agony, unable to get out of bed it hurt so bad. The only way I was able to deal with the pain, was because my mom had half a bottle of pain killers from an operation about 6 months before.
Shit like that is why I have no love for doctors, or the medical corporations.
Oh, and I had to pay $150 for that ER visit WITH health insurance.
+Punchy Scrotums I got in a fight and the other guy pulled a Mike Tyson move on me ripping of my wright lobe of my ear. i went to the hospital and immediately i had a reconstructive plastic surgery ( for free of course )...did i mentioned that i had a free college education after high school and free skiing lessons for 2 seasons since it was a sports college ? There is a down side since Romania is not that rich as USA . We do not have the best medical technology like in the US , but doctors work with what they have but still all ambulances are new Mercedes Vito and you still ride in style !
Yesterday I went to the hospital's ER, been sick the last week with what I thought was pneumonia, had chest x-rays, urine sample, ECG, Blood test, saw a doctor got a prescription, in and out in 2 hours at the ER, went to the Pharmacy got my prescription filled total cost $61 which was all Pharmacy costs.
This single payer system is so freaking expensive... NOT I pay less than 1% income tax total for my healthcare
For the life of me I can't understand why my neighbours to the south of me (USA) hate the idea of Universal Health Care, I guess Socialism is evil...
The reason why it's expensive is because greed and profit, take the uk for example NHS for 65 years all that would be free and he drugs would cost no more than say £15 that's about £20 dollars
