Viral Posts Claim Anjali Birla Became IAS Without Taking UPSC Exam; Here's a Fact-Check
New Delhi: Several viral social media posts claim that Anjali Birla, the daughter of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, became an IAS officer without appearing for the UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE). The posts claim that Anjali was benefited from favoritism due to her father's position. It is said that she was directly selected in the UPSC reserve list through backdoor entry.
Fact-Check
According to the UPSC website, Anjali Birla did appear for the CSE exam in 2019. Her name and roll number - 0851876 can be found in the official list of candidates who cleared the UPSC CSE Prelims exam 2019.
She then cleared the written exam securing a total of 777 marks out of 1750. Moreover, she scored 176 out of 275 marks in the interview round. Her total marks were 953. However, her roll number was featured in the reserve list released by UPSC.
It must be noted that UPSC releases the reserve list every year, in accordance with the Rule 16 (4) & (5) of the Civil Services Examination Rules, that mandates UPSC to maintain a Consolidated Reserve List in order of merit below the last recommended candidate under the respective
Anjali Birla, IAS, is currently working in the ministry of railways. She completed her schooling from Sophia School, Kota. She then pursued Political Science (Honours) from Ramjas College, University of Delhi. She cracked UPSC in her first attempt.
