This conversation about marriage illustrates something that I've been saying that is a bitter truth. Men do not listen to women carefully about what they say and how and why they move the way that they do. The majority, women do not want a man. They want a beneficial situation. They more often than not, do not love their man. They love the lifestyle that can be attained through him and/or they love how a man makes them feel about themselves via the status of titles like wife and mother. And they love being with him if it gives them social status. But they do not love him actually. Men need to understand this distinction. Shaunie O'Neal and Tia Mowry are examples of what I am talking about. Shaunie admitted never loving Shaq, she just wanted the kids and the lifestyle and left with the bag when there wasn't any more to gain and the coast was clear. Tia Mowry got the title of wife and mother but when the novelty of those titles wore off and she got a raise at work, she left because her ego told her that she was better than him. It depends. The quality of the options matters more than the quantity. If you have lots of high quality options then there is nothing wrong with sampling each one. It is hard to convince someone to enter a contract with the high probability they will be punished if the contract is broken. Even if they are not at fault. It doesn't make sense for a woman to reject a relationship that provides her all the benefits of marriage without the legal contract. The guy is trying to place a price tag and benefits on her values. That means if she agrees to this terms she could be bought and/ or manipulated based on circumstances, which she not placing her value on.

The foundation of mariage is -and has always been, the preservation of riches (whether it being money, land, sheep, the rearing of children etc…). So, in that respect, the vows the newlyweds took and gave to each other during that ceremony were not only sacred, but they were binding them for life as well (the “until death do us part” wasn’t just uttered Willy-nilly, for fun).
Because, again, back then, mariage was an institution solely designed for the preservation of a legacy.
Nowadays though, it has lost all that meaning. Today, it is more of a make-believe thing geared toward “happiness” -whatever THAT means. And if you find yourself being “unhappy” in your mariage (for WHATEVER reason), you can divorce. Simple as that. And screw your vows. Screw your family. And screw the legacy you’ve built until then.

I’m dubitative on that. And frankly, maybe that’s my gender-biaised voice talking here…but I fail to see what’s self preserving in demanding half of your ex-partner assets when you divorce them. On top of alimony and child support.
More often than not, it’s the men whom end up bankrupt after a divorce. And interestingly enough, it’s quite easy to do so in westernized countries.
@juanansi what i mean in "self-preservation" is that mindset of the "what if" clause. Having an exit strategy just in case. That includes greed, as in the examples you just used. Child support, health care, alimony etc.
