- During the Buddha's lifetime, the people of Shakya and Koliya built a dam across the river Rohini, which flowed through the middle of the two countries, and obtained water for sowing. One year in the month of Pozon, when the crops withered due to lack of water, the farmers of both cities gathered.
The people of Sakya appealed to the people of Kolia and the people of Kolia appealed to the people of Sakya to give us mercy as they can produce their crops from only one river. But the inhabitants of both countries rejected the pleas saying that they could not depend on others. Because of that, a conflict arose between the two groups. They insulted each other by declaring race, tribe etc. Then this dispute spread to village chiefs, city chiefs, and ministers and finally went to the kings, so it turned into a war between the two countries.
When Lord Buddha looked at the world at the end of great compassion, he saw that his maternal and paternal relatives were in the middle of a conflict. At that time, he inquired whether the conflict would be calmed down if he went there and knowing that it would be calmed down, he went there and worked in the sky. Seeing the Buddha visiting there, the inhabitants of both countries threw away their weapons and worshiped the Blessed One. Knowing the matter, the Blessed One questioned why the great king had gathered here. The kings declared that they had gathered here to fight. Lord Buddha asked why they were fighting. They replied that it was because of the water. They questioned how much water is expensive. They replied that little is precious. They asked how much the earth is worth. They answered that it is very precious. The Kshatriyas asked how much it was worth. They replied that it is very valuable. They asked whether Kshatriyas of much value were killed because of water of little value. Pandana Jataka preached and explained that there is no inspiration in strife and it is not proper to quarrel.
