I was happy to see you included "The Secret History". Donna Tartt went to Bennington a good 14 or 15 years before I did, but she was one of the major literary celebs for all of us. "The Secret History" is fun for Bennington alums because the college in the book is a thinly disguised roman à clef of the school, like Bret Easton Ellis's "The Rules of Attraction" (he and Donna Tartt were classmates and remain great friends, though I think she is the better writer--- still, "Lunar Park" is, I think, his best work, and great Halloween read).
I do have to say, though autumn is absolutely beautiful in Vermont, and I love it there, my home state of Maine may even be better because one can visit the ocean.

Australian here and receiving all of these amazing Autumn recommendations and it's Spring here in this big country, so I'm going to have to save my Autumn TBR for 2023 season. Oh boy!
I'm not a horror fan and I'm not into scary, psychological books because they give me nightmares, really do! But saying this there are so many amazing books that I've seen and have TBR'd that can be read over the Autumn season.
Thank you for your recommendations-some are making it to my TBR, I like the sound of The Manningtree Witches, really because of its British setting and the idea of a village with all women, intriguing!

I read We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and I didn't really care for the narrator's voice. Also saw the twist coming miles away. Ooh I read Piranesi last year and loved it so much!! Definitely support the decision to include it based on vibes. Still have to read Notes of a Crocodile!

Willow, interesting Video. I am currently reading "The Manningtree Witches". I get the same reaction from the beautiful writing. Also, I have been doing some digging into the times of James I and the Witch trials. (I also love history). The Burning of Witches - or those perceived to be such - is actually scarier to me than the Witches themselves. (Witches & Vampires actually do not scare me.) Thank goodness I didn't live back in that time!

Honestly, you can sell me any book at this point! I have a senseless vendetta against Shirley Jackson and Kazuo Ishiguro because I really didn't like The Haunting of Hill House and Never Let Me Go but the ones you mentioned in this one piqued my interest for the first time ever so thank you, I hope you're right :D
Oh I just remembered the book Your House is On Fire, Your Children All Gone by Stefan Kiesbye. That book is definitely perfect for Autumn :)
I read The Remains of the Day earlier this year on your recommendation and was absolutely floored by it. The most interesting part of it for me was how brilliantly it explored the pre-ww2 period from the British perspective. There is such a sense of fragility in stevens' ego that blends both with national pride and a deference to authority that explains just how normalised fascism can become, all while being wrapped up in this sort-of tragic missed-opportunity narrative. Uhghgg so good

Ohh so many of my favorites here and also some witchy books I haven't read! Highly recommend Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner, "--the witty, eerie, tender but firm life history of a middle-class Englishwoman who politely declines to make the expected connection with the opposite sex and becomes a witch instead" as John Updike perfectly describes it.

My favorite autumn book is Moominvalley in November by Tove Jansson, not gothic at all, just really comforting and melancholic. The illustrations are beautiful too.

We have a quite beautiful spring this autumn I'm Lyon, so I get confused what I should be reading. It's 24°, I'm walking around in my t-shirt and considering going for an ice cream.

I wrote down some of these titles in a notebook so I can better remember them, and I just placed a library hold for Manningtree Witches, yay. Idk if this book would count, I'm not that smart, but I really liked Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo. And I finished What Moves the Dead. It was creepy and fun and Avi Roque did a wonderful job with the narration. Anyway this is an entertaining video :)

I want to read Dracula now 😂But I don't have the book. 😭. I am currently reading a korean folklore book about nine tail foxes or as the Koreans call it, gumiho. It's a re-read actually. An enjoyable one. I like it. Hope you have a good Halloween this October, Willow 😊

There is a very good audiobook version of Bloody Chamber, part is read by Richard Armitage. I love his voice and Carter's retalings perfect match.

I really wanna a copy of We Have Always Lived in the Castle as a book cause reading a long literary work in a smartphone is much uncomfortable for English learners like me. It takes a lot of time and you value a copy much more than a file on the Net.
Update: what the 214 pages of the novel (info from Wiki page)!? Then I can try to read it as a whole through the screen.

Lol, in the past I thought we were on the same wavelength on most books. But for me Piranesi was just heartbreaking and brutal, sad beyond sad, all about melancholy and isolation. And Lapvona was a laugh out loud riot, like an adult Disney animated film on steroids with gross out potty humor and farce with Quasimodo and the King from Shrek!
I was hoping that one of the books you were going to mention was What Moves the Dead, a new book out this summer that retells Fall of the House of Usher. I would be very much interested in what you make of the lead character who is non-binary. I saw what appeared to be two separate marketing threads, one touting it as LGBTQ and another not highlighting that aspect at all. And then there’s the execution of the character in the book itself.
I did read one of my favorites authors, Jeanette Winterson’s, FranKissStein, which was both historical about Mary Shelly’s life and writing the book, and speculative about sex robots and AI in the very near future. It’s a very interesting rife on the story and a great seasonal read as well.
What Moves The Dead isn’t out here yet so I haven’t read it but I’m gonna

I don't know if I'm in the minority but I find beautiful prose off putting. I tried to read The Secret History and couldn't get through it. If you have to rely on slurs to show that your character is a bad person, you're not a good writer.
