In this video, I explore how taking more risks is transforming my life in my 50s. Drawing from personal experiences, I share moments when I dared to step outside my comfort zone and the powerful lessons I learned from those decisions. I also break down a formula I developed to help me (and you?) understand better the process of risk-taking, which is instrumental to living a richer life.
I then dive into the challenges of droning (yes, droning!) and navigating French culture and the language, both of which have brought up in me high levels of fear and anxiety. But I’ve realized that without embracing these fears and discomforts and taking more chances, I can’t fully experience the freedom and fulfillment that I crave.
Join me as I share why taking more chances is so crucial to living a fuller and freer life.

Fantastic video. You seem so much freer speaking here than in your previous videos!! Very brave of you to do this, I found it refreshing. Beautiful emotion at the end. Also 3:25 made me laugh, glad you didn't cut that out.

Haha, yes, all thanks to you! You were also a driving force in me opening up in front of the camera. You've been pushing me in that direction for a long time. I finally got it, how to loosen up and just speak, be my imperfect self. Which is perfect as it is. :) If I could just keep getting out of my way...

Love the new format..great work! You have a sparkle in your eyes in this video. Bravo. I completely get where you are coming from, as I am a lot like you. We moved from Washington State to France last year, to north eastern Brittany. Your move shows that you are, in fact, a brave soul, as the moving process, being an expat, and day to day life here is fraught with challenges (and so worth it). You don't have to see the whole path before you take your first step.

I watch your wifes video channel also and I find it interesting on what I perceive the differences are. You seem kind of dark and moody, in your head a lot. Left brained logical. She seems lighter generally more open, right brained creative, happier. I'm interested to know how that works between you two.

Just a raw brain dump after watching this: I've been following Nathaniel since he was living in Mexico, then your channel since he introduced it to us, and now your wife's just a few months back and I just have to say I'm super proud of you specifically. Your personal growth through the minimal lens of YT is quite drastic compared to the rest of your family and being a man of similar age as yourself with two kids... huge props my friend. 👊🏼

You made the video a while ago about not having friends and I feel as if you are a friend o me because I resonate with both you and your wife with many things that you’ve spoken about. It’s been a challenge for me navigating through this new world of advanced technology and just seeing the death of so much that was great. I can’t express the gratitude of these videos because I realize that I’m not alone. Many of us gen xer’s are having a hard time. We do feel alone, we are all trying to figure things out and work through things. I moved back to my home country, Panama, because I lost my home over a year ago in the states. I’ve been very isolated for a few different reasons and I realize that it’s not good. I do want to eventually move elsewhere but I know that I have to unload this hurt and really devastation before I can move on. This video and all of your other videos have been extremely helpful. Thank you!

This resonated with me very much. I’m a retired empty nester who moved back into an urban area and I’m challenging myself getting involved with activism and arts classes. It can be intimidating and frustrating. I just say to myself, just try it, what do you have to lose?

It's so strange - as a young adult, fear and anxiety wasn't an issue. The years pass, and I find myself reluctant to try new activities. I assume everything new that is presented to me is silly or boring. I finally became so bored with my sheltered normal - I forced myself to go out with (younger) friends to take part in life. Simple things, which I will not get into. It took me becoming so exhausted and bored with myself and the nudging of my therapist to open the door. BTW, fear has kept me from getting a drone. LOL I don't know where the fear comes from, but it's there. Cheers!

You’re much better not tied to a script. The script can make you sound pretentious and privileged, much less so in this video where you come across as being honest. (It’s still a privilege to do what you’re doing!)
I’m an inherently shy and introspective person but am lucky to be able to place desire over fear. Why make those emotions compete ? My first trip to Europe was on a merchant ship ; I wanted to do it so badly I didn’t even think of how stupid and risky it was (it was in 1977). Since then we’ve done a lot of risky things, but always in an in an informed way. Like you we have ended up in France, but have lived elsewhere in Europe previously. I’ve learned German and am always doing what you’re trying to do - finding ways to meet people and improve my French language competence. You can think too much about things and miss the opportunity to just do it.

I guess I don’t have those feelings. Ive moved around a lot. I moved to Hawaii 6 years ago & forced myself to come back to Florida a few months ago to finish the renovation on my Airstream so I can move past it. Ive never been anywhere I don’t speak the language, so I can’t relate (unless moving to Miami counts). Good on you for continually challenging yourself to get out of your comfort zone!!

LOVE this new approach! Definitely less ‘in the box’. The integrity of your stunning visuals is still intact. You always leave me wanting to see more, but then so very grateful for what you are sharing and for the quality.
Funny how deliberate and structured your stepping outside of your comfort is. Hearing/seeing what you have started to do brings me to realize that I have been doing (loads less intentionally!) the same in order to pull myself out of a ‘lowest common denominator’ style of rut.
35yrs ago I ski raced in an amateur club.
So I decided it was time to learn how to snowboard. All on my own, at 67. Well… I fell…. A lot!!! 🤣 lesson learned.
Now, on the regular, my greatest joy is playing in ensembles where in rehearsals, I have no idea which of my 3 instruments I will be asked to play! Just ‘put me in coach’ is my personal moto! No complaints! Just DO it! … and I’ve improved my playing, & reading tremendously!
I traveled alone to Italy, and was a student in Venice for 2 weeks for music that i didn’t particularly like. Had to use my dusty 40yr old college level Italian language skills. …. And I THRIVED!
Now I want to know why Finland is the happiest country and if it is possible for that happiness to transfer to a solo traveler!!! Let the adventures begin….and continue!!
Wishing you the best with your French! Practice improves EVERYTHING!!

I really like your formula. It resonates. For me the key is to get to the heart of what I really, really want and to make absolute sure that whatever I'm pursuing is truly for me. In the past, I've gone for things that were more about the status quo (job, house, etc.) and less about my hearts desire. Now I make sure that the thing I want is what I want. I also give myself permission to pivot if I get into it and realize it's not for me. I too struggle with getting out into the world. Lots to unpack there. I might just try the coffee shop challenge. Low stakes way to be in the world. Thanks for sharing with us all. Best to you.

First thing, thank you for the exquisite choice of music! And congrats on your spontaneity, you did really well without a script! I can relate a lot to having this inner fear that many times blocks me. I used to be more fearless when I was younger. I'm more cautious now. I'd like to think it's my life experience teaching me that it's not always a good thing to jump with my head forward into everything that crosses my mind or my heart. Adjusting to a new culture is difficult and it takes time. It's funny how much we are stuck in our ways of doing things and how difficult it can be to unlearn and relearn other ways of doing things. As always, you've given me a lot of food for thought.
