I love this format, but I think a mixture would be nice. Maybe still go through the spell list, but a more objective view of each of them instead of a rating would be nice
I liked the old format. The general advice is nice, but having a very quick overview of every spell with a salty dash of sarcasm was more entertaining and saved me from needing to read EVERY SPELL when I'm playing a new character class. Especially the wizard...
I would like a mixture between this style and the rating format. This was really informative, and I'd like you to implement it in future videos, but I still like the quickfire ratings to give me an overview of the existing spells. Plus, I love the hilarious descriptions. All in all, great video as always.
I like this format, but I'm a big fan of the spell-list format as well. Maybe mix 'em? There's a term I saw on GitP forums that I love: BLtOC, or Better Left to Other Casters. If you're a half-caster, you get very few spell slots and need to balance them carefully, so "BLtOC" essentially means "this is a good spell BUT you need your spell slots for other stuff more". For example, Fireball is an incredible spell, but it's potentially BLtOC if you're an Eldritch Knight with a low save DC. Paladins get some great utility spells, but they're BLtOC unless they're spells only the Paladin can cast.
I played an ancients paladin, got him up to 18th level and used like 3 spells ever. Greater steed because who doesnt want Peter the Griffin on their team. Aid at 3rd level, and death ward. The only other spells that saw use were misty step when I had to get close to the wizard and aura of purity, because death cults and vampires suck. Though, it was nice to have revivify on hand when the actual healer goes down.
Ethan Filips I have only two others in my party but I am using ensnaring strike all the time. I am constantly using it to control the battle field and make it impossible for the enemy to get to our caster. Granted I am only level 8, but I am surprised to hear you didn’t use the spell at lower levels.
@@conradkorbol I had a few more in my group, including a wizard, cleric, and druid. Summon Steed is actually a fantastic Spell. It isn't concentration, it lasts forever provided your steed survives, and it gives you an excuse to take the mounted combatant feet guilt free which is really good. Plus your steed buffs your movement range so you can kite and heal during fights.
I actually kinda liked the lists, even if there were things I'd disagree with. Though I feel like if and when you get around to warlock, you'd need to give each spell two ratings based on if they're blade or blastlock. Definitely agree though: I've always felt that Paladins don't get as much bang for buck out of offensive spells.
Just a heads up: Aura of protection applies to your concentration checks because, despite the name, it is a Constitution saving throw. Check the Players Handbook about concentration if you understandably want to fact check (PG. 203). It isn’t uncommon for spellcasters like Wizards to take the Resilient feat purely for the proficiency bonus to your concentration saves. This is also why Sorcerers are very good at maintaining concentration because, unlike the Wizard, Sorcerers are naturally proficient with Constitution saves at first level. So, if you’re ever worried about maintaining concentration, remember this fact.
I have to say I'm a fan of the format, it feels more engaging than reading off a list and being unable to say much because you have so much more to get to.

Paladin was my first class I played, Agatha Slaggbottom of the Ocean Mountains, and she was a BEAST. Then the next character Corbin Ironleaf of the Green Knights (hello Naddpod), and most recently an Oathbreaker Minotaur named Brillyn. All of them have been an absolute JOY to play. I had no idea that they'd be my most played and probably preferred class to play. Artificer has been real fun too though. Thanks for the vid :)
I'd say with guidance that I have 0 experience with 5e, but also feel like in a system where numerical bonuses are so rare that being able to throw a d4 at a friend would be pretty good, considering that it's also a discount version of the Bard's Gimmick but totally at will.
I REALLY like this new format. Maybe it's because Paladin is my favorite class and I completely agree with your take. But I like the idea of giving the whys instead of just the whats, and letting us make up our minds. In the old format, I was just taking notes, and making a list of all the "good" spells. This way, I still need to make my own choices, but I can make more informed choices.
As someone who JUST started playing a brand new campaign as a Paladin for the first time, this actually was extremely helpful, and it def made me feel more confident playing the class.
I like the new format. It puts the rating system in context without using the rating system. I too love Paladins and my Oath of Vengeance paladin will also be my first going to level 20. Love this class and love the ability to prep situational spells where I don't have to worry if the situation never comes up because I can just fuel it into a smite. I think other classes have to choose between damage, buff, and utility spell prep, but the paladin doesn't have to. All his spells can be damage spells if he wants them to
This was like changing eye contacts: didn’t know how much better the new ones are until I saw it with my special eyes. I really like this format because it puts spells into the perspective not of going down the list, but why they’re there and when you’d need them. I was going to play Paladin and didn’t think about concentration like that at all
Honestly, if rather you do whichever format for these videos you find most enjoyable, I watch these videos for your personality as much as for the DnD content
I'm super fond of Bless. As long as you have some time to apply the buff before heading into close combat. It's on average a super cheap +2.5 to all your attack rolls and saving throws. And while the spell does require concentration, it also grants the bonus to the save to maintain itself. Oh, and of course, you can give it to at least 2 of your friends at the same time.
Holy shit. This was amazing. Paladinnis my favorite and my go to class. Now I would have liked a rating. But I think. This was much better. Well done. And looking forward to the next video.
Love the new format, I'd only suggest tossing out some notable spells of each category that you used the most or surprise you the most. This gives a really different perspective on the class than I had before!
Got to say, I'm a fan of the format change. It's nice to hear the ways spells should be used than just having them ranked for usefulness. I do wish there was a good way to blend in a little of the old format because it is nice to hear the spell list listed.
Hi davvy. Thanks for making this video and talking about one of my favorite classes and their spells. I would just like to say that in my mind, when I am making a paladin and choosing their spells, I tend to pick the supportive spells (shield of faith and compelled duel are my favorite on paladins) since they let me stay on the frontline while at the same time allowing me to help the back line if they need it
I really like this format. I'm playing my first paladin in 5th edition and this really helped because I totally go overboard with the "what if I need this particular thing for this particular situation?" Mentality.
I did like how you broke down all the Paladin spells into four separate formats, but I do like it when you go over each individual spell. Sometimes, spells are only good in the correct situation, requiring a long rest to prepare that spell. Then there are other spells that are pretty key to a Paladin (unless you're going with a specific build). In short, I would like this new format added on to what you were doing before
I'd say resilient has its uses. It works really well with shield master's evasion ability. Gives you a much higher chance to negate all damage on Dex saves, which has saved me in quite a few situations.
@@oxythemoron7052 while I'm tempted to agree, I would actually have to say that's not true, because a spell that works well for a squishy wizard might not be suited to a big beefy fighter or a sneaky rogue.

I say why pick just one format of Davvy's class spell videos? How about both formats? Anything that gifts us with more of Davvy's glorious voice & wit! 😉
As many have said i like this format, however I also miss the quickfire spell description and/or a witty line about why you should or shouldn't take said spell. I don't know how tough it would be to mix both formats but id like to see that in the future. Whatever you choose we enjoy these videos so keep up the great work!
While I enjoyed the individual spell rating jokes( since they gave practical use advice when they wasn't a punchline for a low rating), I think this broader category style might be more useful for understanding how a class's spellcasting behave in play. I made a paladin concept a while back where I took a bunch of the "smite but x", that I haven't really had the chance to see in action. The board categories gives me a better idea of what kinds of general spells would be used with as a Paladin, so I can go back n revise those spells without it just being a checklist of "Wow, xyz spell is really good cause someone said so".
I really really liked the new intro. It was nice, and I liked the changed format as well. I just hope you make the videos that you want to make and not put that much stock into the comments. You gained your audience doing what you enjoyed, and your audience will grow one way or another,
I love that the premise is pretty much "just smite" 😂 as someone actively playing Paladin for the first time (lvl 20, Oath of Ancients), all the stereotypes are true. It really is a religious jock who shines in combat 😂
I'm down for this format, though I would like it if we got a spotlight on spells: here're your do's and dont's, and here are a few you may glance over that deserve a second consideration for your prepared spells for the day.
A good idea would be a DavvyMeter within videos about a specific class' spells, so that they can be rated within the context of that class rather than in a vacuum. The same spell can be useless to one class/subclass and fantastic for another.
Honestly I think a combination of the two formats would be best, as it explains more about the spellcaster in relation to the game and give players the opportunity to learn their options with this knowledge
I’m going into my first campaign this week (hopefully), and I’m playing the war cleric and I’ve realized that I’m a pretty awful healer or at least my character is and it’s going to be wonderful because I’m the only healer. Chaos everyone chaos. Also this will be my first time playing ever and yes it will be over a call or something.
I just went full on tanky support, heavy armor mastery, shield of faith, an actual artesanal shield made by another party member and an overuse of the "Prepare" action so i can stay close to allies and use the forbidden Protection fighting style more often I think that i haven't used a single smite yet, i have to get off the mindset of "i might need it later" first

Davvy Chappy, God of Charm, Trickery, and Information.
I mean I feel like this plus the mixture of the old davvy meter would be great. Plus it seems you had more fun doing it the previous way.
I love that the premise is pretty much "just smite" 😂
as someone actively playing Paladin for the first time (lvl 20, Oath of Ancients), all the stereotypes are true. It really is a religious jock who shines in combat 😂
i like the new format
I like this style more but think layering on a few more spell examples might anchor it a bit better. 😃
I'm building a paladin right now and this vid is so helpful thank you
I'm down for this format, though I would like it if we got a spotlight on spells: here're your do's and dont's, and here are a few you may glance over that deserve a second consideration for your prepared spells for the day.
A good idea would be a DavvyMeter within videos about a specific class' spells, so that they can be rated within the context of that class rather than in a vacuum. The same spell can be useless to one class/subclass and fantastic for another.
Like this format for sure 👍
How is Davvy consistently so cute?
His incredible hair.
+4 Charisma and a charm spell.
The bastard...
I just love combining Clerics with Paladins... More Holiness!
Honestly I think a combination of the two formats would be best, as it explains more about the spellcaster in relation to the game and give players the opportunity to learn their options with this knowledge
Great video. Never knew Paladins had spells besides smite.
Oh yeah you stack aura of protection, a high con, resilient, and war caster, you arent ever gonna drop that concentration unless you die instantly
I just went full on tanky support, heavy armor mastery, shield of faith, an actual artesanal shield made by another party member and an overuse of the "Prepare" action so i can stay close to allies and use the forbidden Protection fighting style more often
I think that i haven't used a single smite yet, i have to get off the mindset of "i might need it later" first
"I'm going to do things a little differently this time."
Anyone who's never seen your videos before: ... OK?
but Davvy..
y-you are my god!
