- Total Disassembly of a MT82 Ford Transmission. This is step by step on how I disassembled my MT-82's. I'm using this video as a reference for when I do the rebuild, but wanted to share in case others are going through the same questions on disassembly. One of these transmissions I am modifying and using in my 68 Camaro M120 V12 project.
Hello mate... I worked on transmission for 34 year a Halewood where these things are made. I have stripped and rebuilt many THOUSANDS of these boxes..literally Thousands ! You did really well considering it was your first go and don't have all the expensive tools I had so well done you !
If you are interested I could offer you a few tips and order of strip to help you with the next one ?
There is a manual that the Ford and Land-rover dealers use and also a DVD on a full strip and re-build that is very good , I know ... I wrote the manual and did the DVD for Land Rover .

I was able to get the case apart on mine by sticking a bottle jack with its top on the flat section of bellhousing where the clutch line comes through and the bottom on the flange of the rear section of case. It applies force sort of asymmetrically so your mileage may vary, but I've got a few thousand miles on mine in my 2000 Lincoln Navigator now.
No joke about picking the MT-82 because the price is right. The Mustang gang hates these things but it seems to me like that's mostly due to the remote mount shifter being terrible. The MGW shifter that I got cost three times what the whole trans did but it was totally worth it. Get some upgraded shift guide feet while you're in there and send it!
Good to know on the Bottle jack. I’m sure there’s plenty of ways to skin this cat. And I agree on the remote shifter. I’ve been looking at those as an option and plan on doing something like that or building that blowfish mount. And yep upgraded the feet to bronze. 👍🏻👍🏻
A hack for removing the Fork Detents, grind the claws of an old hammer so they fit around the base of the detent, worked great for me!

Hi, recently i have a this trans issue where it suddenly lock me out of 3rd and 4th gear under normal driving. And now it grind before going into gear. Does that sound like synchro? Because 1,2,5,6 gear still shift in fine
So which one is the shift pads , shift rail stop and synchros 🤔

What are your opinions on the durability of these transmissions on stock-ish power levels and what would you recommend upgrading?

Hey Alan! Sorry I didn’t get back sooner. Been busy lol. I checked the others and haven’t be able to come up with another way to install. I won’t be taking this part until down the road when I get closer. I’d like to revisit this with ya though when I do. Would really like to do a follow up with your updates 👍🏻
@@dream_killer_racing I posted you a link to a guy building a Land Rover box. If you have a quick look you will see the reverse synchro outer sleeve has no teeth on one side. Maybe on yours they have spur teeth on both sides ?? The ones we used at Halewood only had teeth on the one side.
So just have quick look , maybe a picture ??
No problem going through any part of the strip and rebuild when ever you're ready.
There are lots of little things in the strip to be aware of , and of course the rebuild.
Like I said I did the manuals for the Land Rover and the Ford Transit MT82 ( Manual Transmission 82mm between centres of the shafts) Main reason being the dealers were repairing these and making a balls of it ...getting paid for the repair and a few weeks later the box went BANG !! So a new box.
With the new manual and re-designed tools they made the dealers send a mechanic to take a course and be given a certificate to say they passed.
They also told the dealers " if you follow the manual ( and DVD) to the letter..you won't have a problem..If you dont and it goes bang thats down to you !"

@@xan7603 Hi Alan! thanks for the video! I did take a look at it and his looks to be the same as mine. In my video I had the selector in the engaged position at 22:22 which makes it look like it has teeth showing, but it’s just in the down position. Check the reassembly video 23:39 of mine. It’s orientated correctly and looks to be the same as the other fellow you mentioned. I was not able to push down because I only had one had and was unable to put equal pressure on the slider.

Most definitely! We’ve been working on the intake design plates as well as the start of the exhaust, so the trans took a back seat while parts arrived. Right now it’s practically back together just haven’t had time to get the video together 😂 on it’s way though 👍🏻
