Richard Strauss should have listened to his critics. He was a master of the orchestra but his music lacked memorable melodies and recognizable destinations (his music seems disjointed).
Yes, one could say that. It also lacks any real deep message, but at the same time his music was and is like no other, and its original beauty and density always make an impression. I've been performing the violin sonata for many years, and it's one of my favorite pieces in the repertoire.
