- I'm changing the hydraulic power lift gate on my Mom's 2012 GMC Terrain. The part number we're using is 23432304 and we bought it on Amazon for about $160. You can click on the link below to purchase one from my Amazon Affiliate link. It doesn't cost you more and I get a small portion of the sale, which helps me to create more content and "How To's" in the future. All in all it took around an hour. The only specialty tool i needed was a T40 Torx Bit.

Man… THANK YOU. You made replacing the actuator a breeze and saved me $700! Added some more oil too.
EXCELLENT VIDEO👍
Your narration/explaining the process including showing the clips and where they attached was great. Very often people forget to show that detail which is so important to prevent clip and panel damage, so high marks for that. Your camera person/assistant was excellent as well. She followed your moves and showed she was paying attention to the project👍👍👍.
By the way, I actually was looking for the how-to remove the opposite right rear panel to replace the sub-woofer on my 2013 SLT2…
So your post was a bonus to me. Now l’ll know how to replace the hydraulic cylinder, hoping it never fails though 🤪
Thanks again 👍🇺🇸
Fabulous video! I am a 60 y/o woman and used this to get mine done on my 2013 SRX. My unit was not in the corner but was easier to get to. I would not have even tried this myself without your wonderful video. Many many thanks! I saved A LOT of money!
I’m so happy to hear it was so helpful for you! Great job getting it done!
@@goku569 the leak is gone and it works but I'm wondering if I did something wrong. It takes two pushes for it to open. It tries the first time but then shuts. Was I supposed to bleed it? Not sure how. Also it needed more fluid so my husband got hydraulic oil at O'Reilly. Was that the right type? it was a very thin clear oil. I appreciate anything you can add. I can continue hitting the buttons twice but want to be sure every thing is ok3
When I did it the first time, I did not bleed it, but later had to remove the panels to get to the pump so I could. The way that I bled it was to remove the fill plug and cycle it about ten times. The reservoir should allow the bubbles to come come to the top and exit through the fill port. Can’t speak to the fluid type to be honest. I bought extra fluid from the dealer. Hope that helps.
Jack&JillofAllTrades you are so awesome to respond. I thank you in advance because I’m asking it another way. You said yiu
Jack&JillofAllTrades you cycled it about ten times. I’m not sure what you mean. So sorry! You mean turn it up and down? Or attach and disattach? I am not automotive at all so the term is foreign to me.
Wow. The GMC engineers really made it a pain to replace that hydraulic arm! Great vid and camera work! Thx.
I cannot thank you enough. I just finished replacing mine and saved tons of $$$ in labor. The biggest problem was removing the four pronged clip at the base of the life pole. I didn’t get all my panels clips attached but it’s good enough. Lost only one screw.
You had way more patience than I would have... ; ) Nice job.
READ THIS FIRST!!! This is a fantastic video, but in my situation (and maybe in the situation described in the video) this is overkill.
The hydraulics would take my lift gate all they way up but then it would start drifting back down slowly. It would never go all the way back down. It would usually stop at about 3/4 of the maximum height. **If the hydraulics or pump were bad, I don't think the door would open to the maximum height.**
Instead of replacing all the the things in the video, I simply replaced the non-electric strut on the passenger side of the car. The strut I took off seemed seized up - it wouldn't go up or down. I think that the driver side hydraulic pump and strut were perfect, but the passenger side strut was always pulling against it. The passenger side strut takes about 3 minutes to replace, and you don't have to remove any body panels or detach the battery. Most importantly, it only cost me $30 to get the part at Autozone.
Derek Roetzel I have a similar issue with my 2012 GMC Terrain. The power lift gate opens entirely, then slowly starts to drift back down..... Did your replacement of the passenger side basic strut fix this issue indefinitely?
Patrick Roob - It’s still operating perfectly with no sagging. It goes to the maximum height and stays there.
I’ve even left it open for several hours, and it stayed right at the maximum height. No guarantees, but I would definitely recommend only replacing the simple side.
Derek - I agree..... I simply replaced that $30 strut and it fixed the issue. I had my tailgate open all Memorial Day weekend tailgating with no issues. Thanks!
Thanks for your input, but my question to you would be: was your right side non-electric strut leaking like the one in the video? Because mine is, just like his from the video (left side/driver's side).
Hi Derek,
My wife's '15 Equinox had the same problem for about two years especially in colder weather. I followed your advice & changed the right one first & walla! was the right fix. So glad I read down on the comments & saw yours. Other wise I would've gone through a lot of work for nothing. My hydraulic side is fine, no leaks that I can see.
Thanks again for the heads-up.
Very well done! I did not realize how involved it was to replace. Thanks to your video, you saved me a lot of aggravation! Thanks
Excellent video. Thank you very much for your video, it really was easy to solve my problem. I didn't change the actuator, I just topped up the hydraulic motor oil level.
This was a great video and super helpful. I just replaced both pistons on my 2013 equinox and it was a cinch.
Good looking out on making this video. Mine just started slowly going down after opening it up. Appreciate it
Your an excellent instructor! I need to change my entire lift gate pump. Not sure if I need to add hydraulic fluid or not. Any idea how to get the fluid in the unit?
Had to change the strut on my girlfriends terrain and this video was very helpful. Fantastic video. Please post anything else you fix while working on the terrain.
You are a patient man 😮
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!
Thanks!!
Great video. Thank you...
Life saver. Thank you!!!
What a PRO...wow thanks man.
Great instructional video
Great video. I will be trying soon.
Is there not a disconnect at the base of the strut? Replace it using the existing hydraulic lines. And thank you, i can see the leak by the tail light there, same as mine.
Nope. Hydraulic lines are permanently attached at the strut.
Great video. Did it work? I thought that it would need some bleeding of the system after install?
Ty. Good Job!!!
Thank you so much. This is crazy complicated. I clicked on your link for the part. I have a 2012 Equinox LTZ and Amazon said it's not compatible...any thoughts?
Having trouble after installing new arm, lift gate seems to need recalibration any help. 2013 terrain.
Great job explaining the disassembled
Part of replacing the actuator, it’s not a
simple job you need some mechanical
skills to complete the JOB.
Thanks GM for making us do all this extra work to exchange a shock. Rip off the computer over the battery and tear apart the interior. GM engineering at it's best. They don't want us to be able to fix anything ourselves anymore. Ridiculous.
Excellent video! It was very helpful. Thanks a lot. What fluid did you use to add to the reservoir? What type and where can I find it? Also, how did you add it? How did you do the bleeding? Again, thank you.
Hey! I had the same question and took me a while to find out, the fluid i used was the AC Delco 10 5041- Hydraulic fluid. It'll say on the bottle that it is for trunk systems. I used if and it worked just fine, add a little bit a time though. Hope this helps!
Thank you for taking the time a lot of help :) :) :)
Changed mine and it still falls…any thoughts? Changed the other side too
My door lifts to the maximum height perfectly, but then it starts to fall. I’m considering just replacing the right strut and leaving the electric side alone. I’d love to hear any feedback you might have about that! Thank you!
Did you find a solution for this?
Thank you so much...
I don’t know what I did wrong, everything works but sometimes as it’s lifting up it makes a mechanical noise as it reaches the top. Any ideas on why?
How you know was the arm the problem? Because could've be the hydraulic pump...how did you determine that?
Can I not just cut the hydraulic hose, cap it so fluid doesn’t leak then stick it back in the body and use a manual strut?
My lift gate is not lifting with the engine off. It partly opens then slams closed. However, when the engine is running it lifts with no problem at all. I do have some residue around the power strut and the other one is very new so not an issue. My thoughts are that the strut hasn't enough "oomph" to operate solely from the battery but when the engine is running the additional speed of the pump allows it to open. Do you think this sounds feasible?
Not really sure, but I’d to autozone and have your battery checked. It’s a free service. The reason I think this is that if it works with your engine running, the alternator would be supplying power to the hydraulic pump to lift and close the power gate. If it’s not working with the engine off, the battery may not have enough “oomph” to raise the liftgate. The strut itself is hydraulically powered and really shouldn’t matter whether the engine is on or off. The only thing I can think of would be the power being supplied to the hydraulic pump.
I replaced the lift gate actuator. The lift gate still is unoperated??
I disconnected and reconnected the battery. The gate still didn't work. I went to look at the inside switch, and it was in off position. After turning the switch to 3/4, it works. My wife said she didn't turn it off. It is her car.
You are a PRO. thanks a lot.
Great video, it worked without having the dealership reprogram it?
MERCI BEAUCOUP ! THANKS A LOT very good video
great video!
do you have to prime the lines, bleed them?
My door won't lift at all any suggestions where to start at
Michael, thanks for posting this video. It's going to come in handy when I try this on my own. My question for you is: Why can't you just disconnect the leaking power strut from the section by the boot? It looked like it disconnected right by the boot portion.
Do you have to do that on the other side also
No. The other side is a standard gas strut.
I'm having a problem with my 2008 Saturn crossover rear gate. It will unlock and lock with the remote control, but will not lift. I can start the lift by hand and the struts will lift the gate. Any suggestions what the problem might be?
Bill Tuttle thank
Bill Tuttle,
did you fix your hatch bud? mine doing the same
How much did the parts cost?
DID IT WORK
That's just the strut not the liftgate itself
I solve my problem with $5 dollar, a bottle of oil and a lot of patience; in just 15 minutes
Thinking this was something DIY nope.. Will be going to the professionals..
