    Q) How long does the battery in the Watch last on one charge.
    A) It depends how often the display is activated, with minimal use it can last two months
    Q) Hey those aren’t milliseconds
    A) Yes they are...you need to take into account the multipliers shown below the digits. It’s a bit like the RPM dial in my car which is x10.
    Errors/Omissions
    At 07:05 I refer to the earth pin on a plug being 'missing' - I should have worded this better as this is how the plug was designed - however I'll still need to replace it with a UK plug in order to earth it to a UK mains socket.
    The language of the stopclock is Czech - not Czechoslovakian....my sincere apologies to anyone who has been offended by this.

    That person did a very, very, VERY nice job on that watch.

      Yep, it's totally not my thing, but the engineering and design really appeals; much more-so than pretty much any other similar watch. It's almost minimalist, within the limitations of using a core technology that is in no way minimalist of course :-)

    Thank you for another interesting review. As a retirement-age scientist, I was always surrounded in the laboratry/tory by the warm glow of Nixie tube displays in the early part of my career. We both can appreciate these devices today for their design, but my appreciation also has the warm glow of a reunion with an old friend, so to speak.

    A) Apologies- at 07:05 I wasn’t clear in my description of the plug - the earth pin is ‘missing’ because this is the way these plugs were designed. I’ll still need to wire on a new plug that earths in U.K. sockets.
    B) The language of the stopclock is Czech - not Czechoslovakian....my sincere apologies to anyone who has been offended by this.

      I'm 6'4" , this would be perfect, BTW Techmoan, when you did the original nixie tube clock video, I went and order one for my Godson, you are right, it's some "guy" in Russia pumping these things out, took several months to get, worth it and it's very "pleasing".
      You are one of the few people I have "alerts" on for. Thank you for doing all this.

    I adore the warm colours and gently formed numbers in the nixie tubes. But they have entered a new renaissance and I imagine it will increase in popularity, especially the more we get used to led lighting and displays.

    • @SmilesHeavy
      @SmilesHeavy 6 років тому +7

      They'll only increase in price since there is only a limited amount of tubes maybe if they get popular enough though the Chinese will start making more tubes for the market to use

    • @philondez
      @philondez 6 років тому +3

      There's a guy by the name of Dalibor Farny who's begun making new tubes, he had to figure out how to do it almost from scratch. I've only seen him make the larger tubes (they looked to be about 1.5" wide, they're the same as the z568m whatever size it was, a quick google search didn't say) but he could scale down his process as necessary. He's got a documentary up on his channel about how he does it and how he got there. Definitely seems ripe for chinese knockoffs though hehe, especially of the smaller ones. Farny's don't look industrial at all though, they look like they belong on a shelf. The 6 tube clock his company makes is absolutely gorgeous regardless of which color you go with.

    Just received my new, restored Reel-to-reel Machine, an AKAI 1710W, perfectly working and brilliantly looking! It's gorgeous! It was my birthday present from my grandfather, although I'm sure he had no idea of its actual value. It was a coincidence! I watched your videos on Reel-to-reel machines, and the very same week my grandfather invited me for a demonstration. I told him how amazing it would be for me if he gave me the machine, so he accepted and I had to wait for only 2 months, untill my birthday. I feel so grateful about my grandfather, since this is the best birthday present I've ever had!
    I would also like to thank you for providing the people with such satisfying material! I wish you Health and Wisdom.
    Yours sincerely,
    Odysseus

    I had a Heathkit Nixie tube alarm clock I picked up in a second hand store in the 1990s (the unit itself was from around 1970). It was an exceptionally clean design with all the set switches on bottom and back with a simple metal band running along the top to activate snooze.

    • @watershed44
      @watershed44 6 років тому

      Wow I loved HeathKit! Miss that company so much I built many kits from them, including a weather center that used a flat panel version of the nixie tube.

  • @magreger

    Excellent build quality on the watch for a small batch product. However I do find the RGB a bit out of place and it's nice that it can be switched off entirely. And as for the stop-watch, it's perfect! I love it. It's very utilitarian but with the beauty of nixies. This was a great quick video.

      The reason the LEDs are in there is to highlight the shape of the nixie tubes when they are off. LEDs draw far less power and I think it's geared to being a conversation started among nerds anyway. LOL

      Sweethomeboston yea you've posted that comment before, your just repeating yourself now. Thing is they were making a joke rather than complaining. I too would love one but the price is too high. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate why they cost that price, simply that I couldn't afford it. Do you see the difference in complaining and making a factual comment??

    No puppets? Thumbs down! Young people these days. When I was a young boy we had puppets with everything. Radio with puppets, corn flakes with puppets, we even had puppets with puppets. These days you're lucky if you have puppets once a year, and only on your pictures on the spider web.

      An excellent turnabout on the Monty Python sketch in which old men are trying to top each other while talking about the deprivations of their childhoods!!

    This Nixie watch is really neat, but for the temperature correction I'd have to say that this is a tricky subject. The more your hands are touching the watch, the more it gets heated up, so it won't display the room temperature accurately, but instead it will display a temperature that is closer to your skin temperature. I guess the correction setting would be for that, in order to correct for this factor (since wearing it on your wrist will definitely make it warmer than the environment), however I don't know how accurate that is in different climates, for example being inside a room at 20°C compared to being outside in autumn or winter at 5°C...

    I suspect that stop clock is for dark rooms. The red colour of the digits would be required and the darkroom timers for enlargers and timers often have remotes like that.

    It would be a good idea to replace the mains wire on your stopky clock, what you have there looks like three core single insulated cable. Modern cable is double insulated - the three plastic covered wires are all within a second plastic covering. This is important because the single insulation can crack exposing bare wires.
    Nice clocks though

    I couldn't be less interested in Nixies since it's nothing amazing or special about them IMHO, but as always - great video. Even if I'm not interested in the topic, it's always a pleasure to watch your work. I guess it's because you are so passioned about it, so it makes the topic interesting to the audience.

    Earth pin is not missing, that is how earthed euro-plugs in French system looks like (in Europe only France, Belgium, Czech Republik, Slovakia and Poland use it). The 'missing' pin is on the wall socket.

    We don't have earth pins on the plug. They stick out of the wall. It's the standard CEE7/5 French plug that is used in the whole continental Europe excluding Italy, Sweden and Switzerland.

    • @johnfrancisdoe1563

      vojtasTS29 Actually, in the west it is only used in France, Belgium (maybe) and (rarely) in Denmark. The most common one is the Schuko (CEE 7/3), which is used in Spain, Germany, Netherlands (maybe), Belgium (Maybe), Sweden, Austria (probably), Denmark (less rare than 7/5), and probably a few more places. The most widely used plugs are the ungrounded plug that works everywhere from Vladivostok to Marbella, and the grounded 7/7 that fits both French and German sockets. The following countries have unique 3-pin designs: UK, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy. The Italian plug is the same as an old north-European loudspeaker plug. Brazil uses a modified version of the failed CEE compromise that fits nowhere.

    • @vojtasTS29
      @vojtasTS29 6 років тому

      John Francis Doe Schukos are compatible with our plugs, though. The russians use both schukos, 7/5 and ungrounded plugs. :D
