    Even 11 years after you made this video it’s helping me out allot. I bought my great grandpas house after he passed and I’m trying to learn about engines with his 1948 farmall cub and it’s so hard to find information on this J4 magneto. I rebuilt mine, and I have good compression, spark, rebuilt carb (sediment bowl and fuel lines too), engine turns over well, but I can NOT get it to even cough. So I’m thinking I don’t have it timed right. I’m going to try your way, hope it’s my problem! Thanks!

    Thank you for taking the time to make and post this video. I bought a Cub that “ran when it was parked” but wouldn’t start. I got the magneto rebuild kit, followed your video and it fired up with just a flick of the starter. Thanks again.

    Thank you. Have been pulling my hair out. My governor was in wrong location followed your video and she starts with a bump of the ignition rod, and runs great again.

    Thanks for the great vid saved me a ton of headaches. I just finished restoring a 49 Cub and the engine came back from the rebuilder in such a timing mess. The mag was off by 180 degrees and the rotor was off by 2 splines and the governor was timed at 3 & 9 TDC instead of 2 & 8 TDC. I was freaking out because I thought they may have the cam and crank off as well. But that turned out ok. Timed the rotor, mag and gov and it runs perfect now. Honestly dont know how they ever got the engine running in the first place. When I first tried it in my shop it ran like shit and started to overheat in the first 5 min. I was pissed to say the least. Thanks again this vid put me on the right path

      Never built any in 46. Check your serial number tag against tractor datas numbers to find the correct year. They started production in 47.

    Very well explained. I'd just like to add that Mags will only run with solid spark plug
    wires. I wanted to add that for people that want to use a mag instead of a distributor.
    Factory mag tractors will come with solid wires, Distributor tractors don't.

    The procedure for an M is just about the same...just as long as you have a hand crank... Make sure that your mag only clicks once while cranking around before adjusting the mag. Then rotate until it clicks, and you're timed. Also make sure that your plug wires are in the right order. 1-3-4-2 from 12:00 around clockwise. The order is from the radiator back (#1 is by the radiator)

    I watched the video. With the engine being a 4 cycle engine. Do you have to turn the engine over 4 times to get it back to TDC?

    Is it the same procedure for finding TDC on the Farmall H?

    • @michaelhengelsberg1364
      @michaelhengelsberg1364  4 роки тому +1

      Peter Houghton hi Peter. There should be a timing mark on the pulley on your H that you should be able to align with a pointer on the block as well. I am not completely familiar with what the Pulley looks like.
      Once you locate that mark and pointer, you take the #1 spark plug out and feel for compression just the same as on a cub. The crank and spark plug hole aren’t as close together as on a cub, so you might need someone to help!

    Thanks for the video. I have a 47 BN and I'm having issues with the timing. When I get to the point where I need to rotate the magneto away from the block I don't get a click. If I keep rotating the engine it will click but not at the TDC mark.

    Michael, this is one of the all-time best videos and was extremely helpful. One question. Everything worked as you said on my '48 Cub with 12volt and external coil. Except for the last step. I got only one click from the magneto, not two. Why is that?

    • @michaelhengelsberg1364
      @michaelhengelsberg1364  4 роки тому +1

      Ken Deal Hi Ken. Thanks for the kind comment. This video always reminds me of my tractor friend, Todd, who did the video recording with me. He passed away way too young and way too soon!
      You should only get one click from the mag when you roll it over before you time it. Then you pull the mag top towards you until it clicks. If you can’t get it to click, then it is likely that your governor is out of time.

      @@michaelhengelsberg1364 It is heartbreaking to loose old and good friends.
      Thanks for your comment. I'll look on the Farmall Cub Forum for suggestions on timing the governor. Just another stage of puzzle solving.

    • @michaelhengelsberg1364

      Ken Deal the Farmall Cub Forum has GREAT information on this. I used to be pretty active on there previously as WisconsinCubMan and later changed my handle to Hengy to go along with my last name and after I moved back home to Pennsylvania after living in Wisconsin.
      Does your tractor run after doing the procedure in the video? If so, you might just have it right and perhaps didn’t hear the second click.

  • @ncangler1
    @ncangler1 10 років тому +3

    Thanks for sharing this. I've gone thru the procedure but apparently my governor is not set right as I do not get the "click" when rotating the top of the mag away from the engine. I move it as far away as it will go and it still doesn't click. Any direction on how to time the governor? :)

    • @Hedgehogz979
      @Hedgehogz979 8 років тому

      Did you ever get the problem solved. I'm trying to fix my fathers 1948 cub and it has the same problem. Really trying to do it ourselves as a gift, rather than hauling it off to a shop. We rotate the mag as far away from the engine as it would go but don't get the second click when cycling the engine one rotation.

    What do I do if the punch doesn’t line up when I get compression on #1

    • @michaelhengelsberg1364
      @michaelhengelsberg1364  11 місяців тому +1

      When you start feeling compression on the #1 cylinder, bring it up until the punch line on your pulley lines up with the pointer. If the magneto snaps before the punch line is lined up, that means that the governor gear is not lined up correctly with the idler gear in the engine.
      Likewise, if you have the line and the pointer lined up and you cannot rotate the mag enough for it to trip, then the governor gear is not lined up correctly either.
