    - common chaffinches are widespread throughout the New Zealand mainland and chatham Islands
    - this is a female chaffinch, it is looking for food under the tree
    - common chaffinches move very fast, making it difficult to photograph and foucus
    - this is a male chaffinch, males are brightly coloured with bick-red breast and chestnut mantles
    - the crown and nape are greyish - blue and the wings are black with white
    - a pair of chaffinches are looking for food on the ground, the male bird has a blue head and orange chest feathers in the front, and the female is in the back
    - the male bird is more colorful and slightly smaller than the sparrow
    - common chaffinch length : 14 cm - 15 cm
    - wingspan : 24 cm - 28 cm
    - weight : 18 g - 30 g
    - lifespan : average 3 years
    - chaffinch are territorial bird, especially during the breeding season
    - they mainly feed on wide range fallen tree seeds and flower seeds
    - and also feed on grasses, fruits and small insects
