  • The brand-new Stormgate beta build is here! The Elephant update to the game changes practically all units and structures, and adds a new unit for the Infernal host called the Hellborne. In this video I cast a best-of-5 series of an internal tournament played the Frost Giant Studios between Kdong and GregR.

    Yes, the units look a lot more distinguishable and their player colors as well. In the previous builds I couldn't tell lancers/exos/bobs apart and all brutues just looked green, barely any player color visible

      Agreed, but I think the real test will be in mirror matches, whether watching or playing that was always difficult for me to tell what was going on (nothing worse than thinking you're doing well only to realise they aren't your units left standing)

    About the use for manually spliting the brute:
    In Age of Mythology, there is an unit called promethean that splits on death like the brute. Very often players manually kill their first promethean because the split guys have more speed and dps, making them great for harassment

    Regarding the naming of builds: it's based on units from previous RTS games, they said so themselves some time ago. So, I guess that the Elephant came from Age of Empires.
    In regards to gameplay, yeah, I'm liking this a lot. All of a sudden, both factions have a very clear and defined theme to them: the infernals just wanting to spam units, not caring too much if they die, in the hopes that they can do their rituals. And the humans with the veterancy system look fantastic. This forces you to care about each and every single unit, rewarding you so much when they gain XP, turning them into powerhouses as could be seen in games 3 and 4.
    Damn, I love where this is going.

      Apparently, there was an Elephant unit in C&C Red Alert 3. Also, C&C Generals has an Elephant that's cut content.

      Harkonnen had a Devastator, Ordos had a Deviator, and Atreides used Sonic Tanks.

    normally im not a fan of verterancy of units but here i think i like it. infernals has animus which give it long term late game strategic options. veterency is vanguards counter to that. it also gives you micro options, i.e keep your higer units safe, and it gives opportunity for the infernnals to target the high level units. i like it.

      I' not sure if i like the fact that the upgraded units blend in so well. One of those lancers survived far longer than he should have, despite being over extended.

      Also the white bar for each of the infernal units I think I'm gonna called it Shroud Barrier or Shroud Shield or even Shroud Carapace where it acts like the Protoss plasma shield

    As far as factions go, the most important thing to consider is how different they are. WC2 had 2 factions, but they were only slightly different, much like in AoE where each faction has only a couple of unique differences. What made StarCraft and WC3 so different were the fully unique factions with completely bespoke units and mechanics. Being fully unique makes them much harder to balance, and 4 proved to be almost impossible in WC3 (see the massive portion of WC3 when UD didn't win anything ever).
    3 races means 6 matchups to balance, where 4 is 10 matchups, making it muuuch harder. While having 10 matchups was pretty cool in its diversity, it was also very hard to track for fans. Having 3 matchups, however, sounds boring as hell, especially with 2/3 of them being mirrors which are traditionally disliked.
    They basically have to have a third race to be successful in my opinion, but would be flirting with very dangerous territory going for a fourth. Let's hope for a third, and if they go for more, hope they are somehow better than Blizzard at balancing RTS races (which is historically no small feat).

    I'm not against the "noob-friendliness" of the big Infernal guys automatically splitting into imps on death. However, there could be some kind of downside to it (like missing a cancel on structures in SC2).
    The imps could spawn with less white health, maybe.

    lowko they already confirmed there’ll be a 3rd playable faction by early access sometime this summer. (they already are testing it internally) the question is if they add a 4th somewhere down the line, which they’ve hinted they might.

    About the amount of races, i think 4 would be the healthiest amount. 10 matchups is not overly complicated and it will be a breathe of fresh air for casters and players alike.

    They should make the spriggan glow purple a little bit before it shoots and maybe tone down the moment a little bit on the swing and just make the arm come up or something

    The scourge looks really dominating in every game I see.
    Some of the recurring factors:
    1 Degeneration doesn't matter when the unit isn't meant to make it home.
    2 Being able to build those shroud towers anywhere is essentially having an AoE shield battery without needing a pylon

    Could probably drop the turrets firing audio an octave or two.. it’s fire rate would distinguish it enough from the other cannon, but the current 3 shot burst is kind of jarring compared to other attacks

    This was actually a lot of fun to watch. Readability is much improved from earlier version. I personally enjoy the rank up feature (similar to total annhilation from a long time ago), as long as its not too strong, otherwise it leads to too much snowballing. As a whole it feels great, and once the rest of the units open up, I hope the strategy becomes more diverse as well between the factions.

    The infernal units make me pretty hype to play this game eventually. I'm a huge fantasy fan over sci fi and the fact that this game has both makes me happy. The different mix of units really appeals to me. That final push in match 2 just looked so cool (still watching only seen first two matches so far!)

    If I had to guess, I'd say that they increased the base graphics settings overall.
    They probably had it toned down in the first patch for technical reasons.
    Lower settings make it so each PC has an easier time rendering the game and it would reduce the number of any graphical glitches.

    personally, this is the first build where i've actively sought out casted games. Idk what they did with this newest build but it's shaping up to be a really fun game to watch

    I hope they keep improving the game like this, and with some luck I'll be able to play it in a few months. It would be great to have some stats shown while casting, like workers, army size or income.

    Emperor: Battle for Dune had a veteran mechanic that I liked. You'd have an infantry man rack up kills and when it got 3 chevrons, you could send it to the barracks then all the infantry men would come out with 1 chevron, rinse and repeat and eventually all your infantry men start with 3 chevrons.

    On the naming convention, its alphabetical. D to E. If more of a theme is expected, maybe the theme is descriptors. Devastator Yeti, Elephant Yeti, as current examples. Frightening Yeti, Giant Yeti, as possible future examples. Just a guess.

      Oh, fair enough, I didn't know we already knew past names like Baneling. "Apocalypse, Baneling, and Chronsphere." There goes my description theory, guess it's just any word, so ya, maybe it will be Furbolg, lol. Maybe it's actually RTS unit names?

    Hey Lowko, I think you misunderstood the Brute ability update.
    It read "when selecting a group of brutes, sunder soul will now always activate on the ones with lowest health" meaning that when you activate the ability selecting a group of brutes, it will kill the one with the lowest health among them, instead of the ability autotriggering when it dies

    Being that this is still super new as a game, aggression is by far the most successful tactic since players haven't figured out the best moves to maximize the effectiveness of that early-game defense. Because the Infernals have what seems to be an easier time being aggressive, it has made them look fairly dominant whenever we see them against the Vanguards since it's easier to be the aggressor generally. When we got a proper late game, the Vanguard looked far stronger. With all this balancing done around the relationship between the two races though, I am curious how the mechanics will have to change if/when a new race is introduced.

    I think the colors looking brighter is because of shadows; other parts of the world are darker, helping the colors to stand out. It's definitely a lot better.

    It might be an interesting balancing method to have a vanguard unit at max level cost one more supply.
    With more experience you'll also want more food

    Unit types seem more distinguishable, but I think that is a lot down to getting used to them. Show SC2 to someone for the first time and they won't be able tell zerg units apart.
    I think the infernals still struggle a lot with player affiliation. You wouldn't be able to tell which Spriggands belong to which player in a mirror matchup. Many of their units have only a tiny area dedicated to the player color. But hopefully that will improve.

    Stormgate looks very interesting now. I think the shroud makes attacking very hard right now, as units to regenerate health while in the shroud, which makes it hard to push into it, unless you have a deathball that can just roll over the enemy.
    Having the regenerating shields around your base give you basically 'double defenders advantage' as your units are not only closer, but every unit regains shields (albeit slowly) while you're defending.

    It's early but I think they need to make the macro part of the game more interesting. Resources look boring.
    So far I just see a lot of looking at the army and nothing else.
    But what do I know. I haven't played it. And I'm still looking forward to it tomorrow, 3vs3 got me intrigued.

    Friggin land hammer head sharks are so cool what a sweet lookin unit… they need to make a reaver type unit from sc1 please sneak it in there if you know what I’m talking about with the tracking orbs you have to build, kind of like todays carrier

    I like Aspirant as the unranked rank.
    Also, even StarCraft 2 had a level below Bronze. The beta name for the lowest tier was copper, and everyone just got pushed up a rank. Bronze used to be current silver.

    I think white hp should either have decreased regen for all buildings outside of the main base.
    As well as making the spawne from the brute have higher stats based off the percentage hp of the brute with ofc a lower base.

    Command & Conquer 3 kane's Wrath has 3, but also added variants to each faction to alter their playstyles, unit's and such, akin to the Legacy of the Void campaign.
    Game looking a lot better overall, easier to follow units and colors. Siege camp seems a bit much though.

    The units look much better, I think they should keep working on it though. I like that some of the new units look very unique. I think the more experienced marines and lancers should have a different color attack if they hit corporal or above. Also those little arrows as ranks are called chevrons (shev-rons). I also think the attacks etc could use some sound engineering but understand the game is in beta.

    In red alert the veterancy system can boost a unit to a point where they can out right kill their counter. Then again that game has a pretty extreme rock paper scissors system so its pretty rare for any units to get max out veterancy

    First, I don't mind you not knowing everything during the cast. It's nice to feel like we're discovering it in real time.
    Second, I played some during the beta and had a ball of brutes vs some vulcans that were going to get away and repair. I manually activated Sunder Soul on my entire brute ball which let me zergling surround the vulcans and finish them off. It definitely has its clutch moments!

    The game's looking way better in this build.
    You can see alot of influences from not only SC2 (general feel, alot of unit abilities) and Warcraft (Gold, and it sounds like heroes), but C&C series as well (The Therium grows like Tiberium, and those turrets are basically RA2 IFV turrets).
    It's clearly a games that's been strongly influenced with alot of good\fun\interesting. features of other RTS.
    The Therium change from all bright green to grey with only green showing when its enriched\upgraded\full(?) is fantastic for visual clutter.

    5 faction is peak RTS man.
    1 faction that strong in Defensive playstyle
    1 faction for Aggressive playstyle
    1 faction for Balance playstyle
    1 faction for Wacky-weird-meta breaking playstyle
    1 faction that have a little bit of the previous 4

    I think 3 main factions is good, but with 2-3 subdivisions within those factions, to give a bit of variety and complexity to each race

    Sunder Soul needs to be researched or micro'd or now it's just automatic that the player need not worry about losing the unit .. per say since they'll just get it back.

    I think the theme is rts units. Devastator is an ultimate unit in Dune 2, and elephant might reference age of empires. I don’t know the other build names so can’t corroborate this guess

    So we have the humans (terrans), infernals with their swarmy style (like zerg). Now we just need a tech focused race (or more races). Overall looks great, and even though I watch but don't play SC2 I like where this is going.
    For me the Shroud looks a bit weird to me. It gives the infernals a bonus on it, but seems hard to spread, unless you have the dropship, that instantly spawns an area of it or judging by lowkos notes, make a ritual to fill the map. Think/hope they will do more with it 🙂

    The Infernal Gaunts just seem wildly underpowered. You'd think that if there's anything they'd be decent against, it's early raiding air units? But Kdong's Hornets just ruined the Gaunts anytime they met.

    For the version I think it is version D as Devastator and the next version is E as ...Elephant or maybe it is a tribute to AoE

    Game looks so much better! But I HATE that the white bar no longer disappears off shroud. That was such an important game mechanic that made for some interesting time attacks and really set a good rhythm to the game. It was unique and I miss it. I feel they are now a little too strong

    I am a player of StarCraft2 from day one. I will say, this game is much much faster (for me) than StarCraft 2 used to be. For example, it took ages to get an expansion, and you have to manual pick units to build or train units. Just my 2 cents

    AoE is different because the different factions/civs are 99% identical, with just a couple of unique perks. In SC2 the factions are completely different from each other. For Stormgate, I think if they want to succeed they will need at least 3 factions, maybe 4.

    Just get rid of unit and building shadows, or change the angle of the shadow to be more top down, still looks bad currently

    Great updates, although the new Hellborn unit doesn't seem to do a whole lot of anything. It hits slowly, lacks damage, and I assume it takes a larger amount of supply. I hope that they also decrease the HP of units overall, as it really forces the player to be on top of micro and (of course only in my opinion) makes almost all of the combat more satisfying. Badly matched units should, of course, be ineffective but the overarching rule of "more stuff beats less stuff" as Lowko puts it should be upheld. This was illustrated to me in the one midgame fight where Greg lost even though he used near perfect micro and strategy. He had more stuff (and arguably better unit composition, as he had to micro more units which should be rewarded), more map presence, and more economy. He lost purely to game balance. I have no idea why I'm writing an essay in the comments section. All in all I just want this game to be good, because I truly enjoy RTS content. Thanks for the video Lowko and thanks to Frost Giant for bringing us this promising game!

    I still think the Infernal faction is too powerful, very beefy especially with the shroud not going down, easier to get a mass army together, and all the units work so well. Production easier too. Could be the player too, but most games I see Vanguard doesn’t really have a lot of chances

    One o the things I originally loved about this game was that it was more defensive than star craft. In Star craft 2 if feels like I you aren't attacking your opponent you aren't winning. Now that defenders advanatage has dissipated and it is so much easier for BOTH races to harass eachtother's economies! I HATE THAT! I miss the old version so much!

    The colors are definitively a bit more saturated and i think this slight cell shading effect i am seeing on units has extremely improved unit legibility.

    Yea the map control element is the best part of this game. Seeing a turtle player get absolutly bopped is very good in my opinion.
