Actually the ony coyote attacked one so he ran. The other racoon chased after him. Our trash panda decided to hold down the food spot. This is when the others came out of hiding.

People don’t realize how vicious and dangerous raccoons can be. All those coyotes didn’t want to get too close!
They weren't targeting the raccoon. They wanted the food the raccoon had. If those coyotes were thirsty for some raccoon meat, it would've been finished pretty quick.

Some people forget that a wildlife cam means predators also. Everything can't eat corn and that upsets some viewers so I try to warn them ahead of time 🤷♀️

Interesting footage. Thank you. Predators calculate the risk of calories spent/injury against potential reward. They knew this was a net loss. Raccoons are vicious fighters and extremely hard to kill. They are Much harder to kill than a bobcat, for example. And they fight to the death. Great 👍

If they were hungry and the racoon was the only prey/food available they would have killed him.
Of course your dog is probably 3 times bigger than a raccoon. Let him try that with a fisher cat or a American badger and you would probably be lookin for another dog.

Well, he has been used to hunt Fisher cats as well. I recognize that coons and fishers are determined fighters, but they are not a match for dogs that have been bred for the specific purpose of hunting. He's still around, doing fine though, thank you.

Nope. They're thinking, we can kill him alright but he has claws and really mean teeth and one or more of us are really going to get really hurt. It's not worth it, we'll just harass him a little bit and then find something better to kill. You see, when you get bit in the wild as a coyote, there is no disinfecting and bandaging the wound. Assuming that no important blood vessel was hit. So wounds get infected and more often than not that animal dies or comes away too crippled to survive. So predators do give it thought whether the risk is worth it.

It was definitely territorial. Notice that one Coyote marked the area before they left. Could be coincidental, but I doubt it. Especially if the pack thinks that area has potential for food.
More like competitors for food. Two things will happen the competitor is run off or killed.
Raccoons are pretty savage though. I guarantee a coyote wouldnt want no smoke with a 1v1. Lol

I use to have a German Shepard mix that killed a raccoon bigger than the ones in this video and she was bout the size of these coyotes… a raccoon doesn’t stand a chance 1v1… these coyotes probably weren’t hungry enough but who knows how it ended it was literally two other raccoons in the area

however, a coyote would also get injured in the fight.
so the coyote would very rarely agree to fight a raccoon to the death, 1 vs 1. its just not worth it for the coyote.

I worked at the National Air & Space Udvar Hazy Center at Dulles Airport. It was highly suspected that a pact took down 2 deer over a weekend. Behind the museum.

I'm from Calgary alberta what amazes me is the coyotes don't attack the drug addicted homeless,but they will attack a clean person? Do they have a way of detecting harmful substances in meat?( humans with drugs in their bodies)?

My great Grandfather used to raise and sell Coon Dogs. The best Coon Dogs in WV, btw. He kept a HUGE Bull Raccoon as a Pet and a Dog Trainer. He told me a Bull Raccoon can kill a Dog, fairly easily. That's the reason the Coyotes walked away, when the Raccoon went into that brush. It was his turn. They wanted none of it.

The racoons wasn't the target his dinner was. Coyotes could have easily killed the raccoon but it was even easier to take his dinner.

I've watched hyenas kill lions before, but lions are still above hyenas. Humans have been able to communicate and coordinate and use weapons since primitive times. Just because animals can beat us 1 on 1 when we don't have weapons doesn't mean they are above us in the predator category. Humans being at the top of the food chain is nothing new.

To me it looks like a couple of adult coyotes with a couple of nearly grown pups that are about to be out on their own. They were giving a lesson on how to deal with racoons... just a few nips from the back to get them to move away and don't get to serious because they will hurt you.. I have never had a coyote tackle a racoon even when a trap. They have killed opossums and foxes in the traps but never a racoon. Just my opinion. Good video!
