The backing track is from the movie inception!! It's amazing to listen to the original song "lost on you" by LP and the piece "time" by Hans Zimmer and listen to this cover afterwards. It's seriously magic. It makes me feel things lmao!

Listening to each song and coming back to this is a must. It just magnifies the artistry of all the individual pieces.
I can tell you from her discord, that Maggie very much loves the Inception backing track. She also did some improvisastion vocals over the backing track on one of her twitch live streams. Needless to say, it was an experience, and sounded wonderfull. *sigh*
Don't worry, Maggie. We Pentaholics LOVE Mario. He attended both PentaCons (2016, 2018) and led the PentaCon choir, serenaded us, sang a concert, played games with us, and brought so much joy wherever he went. He's also a world-class hugger. Scott, though, is the geniuis here who pulled it together. Whoever would have thought of laying LP's lyrics and melody over the Hans Zimmer track? Mr. Scott Hoying, of course. And their voices combine perfectly in this jaw-dropping power arrangement.

What I love about this is that it showcases Scott's rawness ... So much passion comes through in his voice.
The simple fact that Scott realized how perfectly 'Lost on You' could fit into this part of a purely instrumental movie sound track is simply mind blowing to me. Wow! A beautiful job by both of them. Regarding a 'next' request, I agree with all the requests for 'Rise' others have made and would also request 'I Should Tell Ya Momma on You' - Scott Hoying (Red cover) if you haven't already done it. Solo a ccapella with rapid flips from bass to tenor while also using his hand on his chest to provide a complex rhythm accompaniment. It's an older piece and I suspect he could do it even better now, but the vocal gymnastics are really impressive. I think you'd enjoy it. Thanks again for another great reaction to a great song.

Wow. Have you not seen Superfruit’s performance with Mario along with Brian Justin Crum & Mary Lambert? They recorded a cover of Rise by Katy Perry. It’s powerful & crazy good vocals. They got together as a tribute to the far too many souls lost at the Pulse nightclub mass shooting. You’d be crazy not to watch it✌️💚

Others have already said this, but I will still chime in. What makes Scott (and really the other PTX singers too) so unique is that there doesn't seem to be the usual ego so prevalent in the mainstream pop community. Scott has sung duets, trios, and all manner of collaborations and he doesn't seem to need to be "The Guy in front." If you watched PTX's documentary, they were also working to promote Mario Jose then as well. Because, let's face it, Mario should be a chart topper. So I think that Scott would agree with your comment about this project.

I discovered Mario thru this song about a year ago. He actually has a number of songs scattered on UA-cam. You should react to him singing "Georgia On My Mind". He also has done work with a bunch of other singers. A couple of my favorites are with the funk band Scary Pockets. He sang with India Carney and Kenton Chen - with the band Scary Pockets - doing "The Middle" and "Dynamite". India and Kenton are also forces to discover as well! Welcome to a whole new rabbit hole! The titles I gave you are just scratching the surface!

Another really good one is Scott and Mario doing a collaboration with Julia Harriman on the Bob Dylan classic "Blowin' in the Wind".
Mario sounds Great but for me Scott makes this song. The emotion in his voice and face and his appreciation for Mario as he watches him sing. He’s a class act and incredibly talented.

To answer your question about the backing track: this track is a very famous instrumental piece called Time by the famous composed Hans Zimmer, written for the movie Inception. Scott then took the 80s song Lost On You, slowed it way down, and put it over Time. Absolute genius

Mario seems to have more “edge”, yet maintains a beautiful round tone to his sound lending such strength to his upper register. I’m very familiar with Scott’s sound because I am a Pentaholic but what a joy it was to experience Mario’s beautiful voice ❤

I suspect that Scott participated in this video to bring attention to Mario and how good he is. It is not that Scott is holding back to make Mario look good. Scott is not holding back at all. Mario is that good that there is no need for Scott to do that.

It would not surprise me if Scott worked it so that Mario would be the shiny one in the piece. Mario worked on some PTX tours and they had Mario open for them at least once that I know of.

The power of music! When it hits the spot there is nothing like it.
Siperfruit's cover of Katie Perry's Rise also features Mario as well as Brian Justin Crumb (from AGT) and Mary Lambert (the magical folk pop singer of "She Keeps Me Warm"). It is utterly transcendent, and was a requiem for the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting. I cry just remembering the performance.

😅ALSO Scott is MUCH TALLER than Mario, Scott is standing with his legs very spread apart while belting this song. Scott is 6'4", there is a behind the scenes vid where you could see the height difference😅
Scott and Mario's vocal tones are very different both could EASILY solo this song in INCREDIBLE ways but Scott knows Mario deserves recognition for that incredible voice so he let Mario shine.

Fun fact: Scott is practically in a split in this video because Mario is so much shorter than him and it was the only way to get both of them in the frame lol!
Also Mario Jose was a stagehand on PTX's tour and during the tour, PTX surprised him by having him open for them in Boston and they flew his family out to see him

I disagree on having Mario sing it solo... Not because he's not A-freaking-mazing, but because HARMONIES!!! 😁 I actually saw Mario open for PTX on one of their first tours and I have heard him in other videos. I think this is the best performance that I've seen him do!!

This always makes me cry. I love Hans Zimmer's film scores, and Time combined with such powerful vocals? 😍 When I heard/watched it the first time, my mouth was as widely opened as yours was.
Mario and Scott collaborated again when Superfruit covered Rise by Katy Perry in response to the shooting at the Orlando gay nightclub The Pulse and was joined by three friends from the LGBTQ+ community. It makes me cry too. I'm pretty certain you'd enjoy that just as much as this one. I hope you'll react to it as well one day.

Also, Hanz Zimmer also wrote the music for "Now we are free", sung by Keith Harkin with Celtic Thunder. Those are my 2 favorite songs. Hope you listen to them for your own pleasure if not a review!

Maggie, you are correct on this one. I love a capello music very much, but when you can get a backing track like this one with the type of vocalists like Scott and Mario, you have to go for it. As for the Sam Smith song, all the music in the James Bond franchise is just incredible. It absolutely projects the power of the theme of the movie. Great reaction to this one. Even playing around with GarageBand with the orchestral sound pack would give you some options to do something like that I’m sure ❤️🔥
And that is what Maggie is doing right now, besides her Opera jobs. Gaining some knowledge on production in Logic Pro. At the moment she is self producing some of her original material. So stay tuned, it might come to a Spotify playlist, or UA-cam channel near you ;)

I love it that you love orchestration! Ohhh, I'll have about a million recommendations... but for now, let's stick with Pentatonix. If you haven't, check out "New Rules x Are You That Somebody" (for KO's beatboxing), "Havana" (for Kevin's trumpet), and "Shallow" (for Kevin's cello). They did "Dancing On My Own" after Avi left. "Gold" showcases Mitch's vocal gymnastics. PTX's Popspring performance is a GREAT live video. Also, do NOT MISS Superfruit doing "The Promise." ; )
