Here's the deal. While I do agree that the 2's from 1991 were packed full of charm and it's quite bittersweet now that they've been retired, but the new Curve idents are as equally charming, as they were made with BBC Two's diverse lineup in mind, and so their placements in continuities fit any mood or show. Not to mention their animation, visuals, sounds, how there were several callbacks to many of the classic 2 idents, and how the curve, and the space that is split from it, represent the number two itself.
With this mind, I've noticed that some people in this comment section are just blinded with nostalgia, and therefore they hate on the new Curve idents just for not being the same, which is a bad argument. While the 2 idents have a huge following, it's true that by age it could grow stale, and besides, when you have a great ident set like the 2's we're, there's nowhere to go but up.

When the original 2 concept was introduced in 1991, there could not have been any executive at the BBC who would have believed that it was going to last for 27 years. It had an extremely successful run and all credit is due to the artists, that a good deal of the original set has such a completely timeless look and feel. I am a huge fan, but I also agree that it was time for something new.
It's rare for a design concept to become so treasured and part of pop culture that it makes a success out of homage and pastiche of itself, but it did all of that too. There was really nowhere else to go.

The way they ended with Silk was great. I think most people agree it was the best one.

Absolutely. So often TV companies mess up this sort of thing. But they had someone in charge of this retrospective who knew exactly what they were doing. Silk really was the peak ident, in terms of visual and audio appeal, and it was one of the original 1991 set. A timeless work of art, 31 years old as I write, but looks like it could have been made yesterday.

@@frazzleface753 Silk stands out to me for multiple reasons. I love the whole 1991 set, but Silk was the one that I loved the most. It was imposing, it was scary. There are very few indents like it. It would almost be perfect for announcing someone's death or some other tragic event. It's beautiful.

@@doomotron6160 I think so much of it that, nerd that I am :), I emailed Tony and Gaynor Sadler (I found their email on their website), the composers of the music, and thanked them for their part in its creation. I was lucky enough to receive a reply from Gaynor saying that it was one of their favourites, too.
From what they said on the 'How do they do that?' segment, visually Silk seemed to inspire them greatly, and I think it shows in the finished product. I say in dead seriousness that It belongs in an art museum.

Coincidentally, Silk was technically the first ident shown as the backdrop of the first menu on February 16th 1991 before Paint took the first on-air announcement.
