with this guy i rarely go for minions early, yeah you might win or tie or atleast negate some damage but honestly early on even if you win youre only negating 2-3 damage and instead of buying minions in the early game you can just level the tavern and take the 2-3 i'll rather try to negate some damage in the mid game when you could potentially take 15 damage
