  • No copyright infringement intended. Ant and Dec reunite with Cat Deeley to reminisce on the hit Saturday morning TV show
    * Video mutes for 25 seconds during 32:40 - 33:05 due to copyrighted background audio. Transcribe of the muted dialogue below*
Ant: We were in the pub
    Dec: Yes
Ant: And I remember saying to you 'What about if I took kids on and if I beat them, like, I really beat them?
** Clip: "Ant, you confident?" "Very confident yes." "Are you sure?" "Catherine, you don't stand a chance **
Ant: With Challenge Ant, we didn't want it to be one of those shows where if they lost, they didn't really lose cos they took away this. It's like, No if they lose, they're gonna lose. That's the rules. A bit like Wonkey Donkey where, like, Dec had a go at the kids for being thick. You know, we didn't ever want to kind of sugar-coat it.

I think my favourite thing about watching this, besides being reminded of the hilarity, is how much everyone wanted to be there. You have these insanely wealthy, busy guests, who wanted nothing better than to make ridiculous sketches with a couple of geordie lads and a brummie lass. It's a rare thing where something on mainstream TV makes everyone come together on a similar good vibe, kids, parents, celebrities, presenters, production crew, even the executives appreciated it was something to celebrate. That in itself is special. My thanks to everyone involved for being a bright spot on many families' Saturday mornings across the country.

The fact that the presenters and the producers had absolutely no idea what Pokemon was or what the hell they were doing when they were making the sketches just makes it even more hilarious and brilliant.

SM:TV truly was everything they say it was and more and it's nice to read the comments from the younger generation who can appreciate how amazing it was, even though they were not yet born. My Nephew was shocked when he realised I knew what Pokemon was and that I watched and played it myself as a kid.
I'd have been 9 years old when the show first started and no other TV show has made me feel the same way as this one did. So sad that it ended way before it should have done, but at least it was on a high and we can remember it for the brilliance that it was. Never have stopped crushing on Dec. So happy I grew up in the 90's.

They should have shown a montage of the Postbag clips where they would receive some disgusting food from one of their viewers and the crowd enthusiastically demanding them to eat the said item. Everyone in the studio would chant "EAT IT!!! EAT IT!!! EAT IT!!!..." and so on, and when they eventually DID eat it, the hosts and the audience' disgusting reactions are priceless

Nigel Pickard was a veteran of Saturday Mornings himself being the producer of earlier hit ITV shows Number 73, MotorMouth and What’s Up Doc? There were two pivotal moments that propelled SMTV to the show it became, the first was that ITV poached Live and Kickings script writers and then soon after Jamie Theakston and Zoe Ball left the show.

Also, I was surprised that they didn't show the 'Ant Aid' episode of Chums. They talked about all the celebrities getting involved, but that episode I recall was ridiculous as they packed out the set with celebrities (not Mariah Carey stature, but it was still ridiculous) singing 'Blink For Ant', Band Aid-style to help Ant who was faking an eye problem.

Aside from the fact ITV poached L&Ks comedy team to write the sketches on SMTV. That's why they disappeared at the end of series 6 when Zoe and Jamie also left. It's highly doubtful SMTV would've ever beat the BBC without them. As Ant and Dec themselves admitted the first year of the show it was one of the worst Saturday Morning shows ever made.

I'm disappointed they didn't show the Ant's Song sketch where they would perform songs about the program that were sent in by their fanbase. I could have wanted loved to heard them singing "We All Love Cat Deeley, She Smiles On My TV..." again.
Also I'm shocked that when they talked about Chums, they didn't show the Big Idiot House scenario or the Ant Aid story from the 100th episode of SMTV Live on 22nd July 2000 where they parodied Live Aid and were singing "BLINK FOR ANT! CLOSE YOUR EYES AND OPEN THEM!" when they were trying to help Ant when he was faking an eye jammed opening problem which costed $15 pounds to get fixed. The studio that day was packed with celebrities (the Ant Aid one, not the wedding on 1st December 2001 when Ant & Dec quit)
Also where's the cat chat ingle "Cat Chat, chat to the Cat, 1898 MEOW!"
Also when they talked about Chums: No, Tom Jones making jokes about his song titles was the second one, the first Chums storyline had S Club 7 on.

They should have played clip of the later Pokemon Rap skits where Ant and Cat would try to escape doing the rap by working at another Pokemon-related job and insulting Dec on how terrible the raps were but Donnely was not having any of it. He would then start on an angry tirade of how terrible they are at doing this sketch and yelling stuff like "GET OUT OF MY SUPERDUPER MARKET!!!!!!!!" "GET OUT OF MY NOT VERY GOOD POKEMON SHOPPING CHANNEL STUDIO!!!!!!" "GET OUT OF MY POKEBLOCKBUSTER VIDEO STORE!!!!!!!!" "GET OUT OF MY RESTAURANT!!!!!!" etc. and destroying the set. Ant then asks Dec why he just did that massive destruction and Dec insults Ant and Cat on how terrible they are at doing this sketch "YOU WAZZACKS BUZZ BUZZ BUZZING AWAY YOU WOULDN'T KNOW THE MEANING OF THE WORD "POKEMON RAP" IF IT CAME UP AND BROKE YOUR NOSES!!!!!!" then Ant asks about the other job that Dec just trashed and what they were gonna do next and Dec yells at them that the other Pokemon-related jobs were shut down and the other two hosts would be forced to sing the rap. Ant would then yell "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!" and the camera would zoom in on him (occasionally the "BIG NO" trope would be cut short when one of the camera operators' cameras accidentally dropped into hitting Ant's face and McPartlin would collapse to the ground) and another rap would begin. The sketch would then end with Dec forcing everyone to do a round of "PIKACHU!!!! PIKACHU!!! PIKACHU!!!..." and the first half of that week's Pokemon episode would start.

I remember seeing the first edition, back in '98. Even though they say that it was terrible at first, I could see that there was a recipe for a hit. Although the BBC had always dominated Saturday mornings, ITV's offerings were actually often very strong too. But then ITV hit an absolute black hole, from around 1993 to 1998.The decline was severe. The main reason why SM:tv Live was not an immediate hit was more to do with its predecessors basically handing the audience entirely to the BBC. But when SM:tv hit the scene, it stood out for being the first ITV show in years to have at least the right idea and the right amount of backing from the network to succeed. CD:UK was also a much welcomed improvement upon the stagnant and irritating ITV Chart Show (Remember how it used to fast forward through all the songs you wanted to hear? Yeah, the most annoying show ever.) Plus Ant & Dec had actually built up a bit of a profile by 1998, with some of their previous children's shows.
The story of SM:tv's success is covered in this video, so no need to go over that again. But I would very much have liked them to cover the downfall after Ant, Dec & Cat moved on. Yeah, it's a tricky subject to approach and I can appreciate why they buried the matter entirely. It would bring a bit of a downer to a feelgood retrospective. But it's an interesting study and I'd have really liked to learn the thoughts of those involved. I admire Stephen Mulhern's honesty that the follow up Ministry Of Mayhem didn't recapture the heights of SM:tv, but I would say that he did himself a little injustice because there was still some excellent work done on that. But I do agree with him that we'll never see another Saturday morning kids' show as good as SM:tv Live. I've seen bits of the current BBC effort in Saturday Mashup, and whilst I appreciate that their hearts are in the right place by trying to recapture the genre, I don't think it's coming to life at all.
Could an SM:tv Live revival work today? Hhmm, yes and no. I think the format could work for today's audience, I think it could be popular. But it would always be eclipsed by Ant, Dec & Cat and so I can understand why ITV have never revived it.

I wasn't defending it, I was expressing some of my opinions on it. I'm not anti Live & Kicking, either. I liked it, I thought it was excellent through most of its existence. When Live & Kicking revamped into the four presenter format, I actually preferred it over SM:tv. To praise one thing, doesn't necessarily mean I'm trashing another.

That was a good read. I think sometimes magic happens but cannot be recaptured. Sm:TV Live wouldn't be the same even if it was relaunched. Just like when they tried to relaunch TFI Friday, that show was amazing and then the relaunch was terrible even though Chris Evans was still presenting. Right place in the right time.

We won't ever get a children's show like this ever again because children's tv shies away from mature topics and generally sugar-coats programming. This was the late 90s, tv was at an all time high in general then. Anything went, partly because there wasn't a billion people crying I'm offended at any chance they get.

It's a bit weird how they packaged this documentary as if SMTV ended when Ant and Dec left. It's a bit of ego-stroking methinks. I think the Ant and Dec years were the best, but the show continued to be good without them. They wouldn't have kept it on the air for another 3 years if it wasn't. Like the ITV producer says at the start of this documentary - if something isn't rating well for a few months, there's always other production companies waiting to step in and take over with their own ideas for shows. Obviously this didn't happen so... speaks for itself.
