The Newcastle Saw Mills and Timber yard used to occupy that site in the 1800's The old O/S Maps from that time show at least one chimney in that location which would explain the flues at the back of some of the chambers. So perhaps these were kilns for the treatment of wood?
The old catacombs under the theater royal go all the way under lloyds bank on the opposite side of the street. When the renovation work in the mid 80's was underway they just kept knock though walls and found loads of victorian props and sets but when the architects realized it was under the bank it all got bricked up again
Hi astralchimp, we know the whole of Newcastle is littered with underground tunnels, basements, shelters, storage areas, and so on, much of it's lost to time and progress. There's a bricked up city under the city that we'd love to explore more and we're always looking for ways in.
A fellow workmate told me whilst digging out land for the then New Pilgrim Street round about and Swan House in the centre they came across a small row of houses with some furniture in them pre Victorian. Their then Boss told them to cover them up quickly with earth and concrete before the proper "Authorities" found out and stopped the progress on the site! The sack awaited anyone who opened their mouth.
That looks like Skinnerburn Road and before it become a reasonably busy alternative to Scotswood Road heading west out of the city there used to be a black sillouette of a large man painted against a wall on the side of the road on a white background, before you reached this featured hole. Even though you knew what it was, it still gave you the creeps walking home from a night out. Anyone else remember that?
Weird how ppl have carted junk n tyres etc so far into the interior of it ... btw what is the grey dust or silt banked up in those sort of side dead-ends? Thats real morse code too.
It is sad but I think it has to be better than the streets. Sad though that Great Britain has sunk so very low and not in only this direction. My hope is that we will recover from the cancer that surrounds us, but doubtful I shall be around to witness it. 🇬🇧
Did you have a shout first to make sure it was empty?!? Would have had a nasty surprise if a gentleman of the road had been tucked into one of those quilts.....
We definitely did give a loud shout before we went in and half expected to be chased out, but luckily it was empty. We went during the day but I think if you went at night it'd be a different story. There was plenty of signs of recent habitation.
THE curiosity for us ! Firstly, much love to the stealthy traffic warden who I’m guessing absailed down from the above trees like a budding Tom Cruise. 🥷 Good hiding spot but a tad sneaky. Still, I wish you well ✋ So after daily asking ourselves as we past by ‘“I wonder what’s in there?”, we had a look. Turns out, not a lot inside. It’s clearly being used by people but probably best just to leave that topic at that ! 😉
Brave of you going in there, but thanks for doing that. Sad to see people sleep there.
I'm suprised someone hasn't tried to turn it into a pub 🤦♂️🤣🤣

Amazing! I wish you did a bit of a close up of the textures of the brick/stone… some looked cooked or something… very interesting stuff 🙏

ive been in loads of underground tunnels with my job on the quayside , clayton st and pilgrim st. its an amazing hidden world.
What's down in those tunnels? Seen anything bizarre or Romanesque or perhaps Tartarian down there, etc?
@@piercebrosnan9528 nothing exciting some use for storage but there's a lot of old rubble and ironwork .. and a lot of damp
Gone past this a lot whn I stayed in Newcastle but never noticed it!
It's hidden in plain sight
Have you been in the old elswick leadworks recently?

Do we know why the hole was put there in the first place ?

On Tyneside, this is a 4 star hotel. The "Geordie Hilton", way-aye.

Night time would be a different story im very sure !
Strange to say but those 'unknowns' add to the adventures 👍
@@mission-abandoned drove along the Quayside yesterday and saw ‘the hole’…..good work!
To my way of thinking they are a cross between Williamson's tunnels in liverpool and the stockport air raid shelters
We are not sure what these little chambers are or what they were used for but hopefully someone who watches will have some suggestions
its the old lead mills building
Thanks guys, I always wondered what was behind that hole :D
Now you know & thanks John 👍
No problem, we we're surprised it was that big behind that little hole
Pasted it last sat and thought what's in there
Well now you know, not much
Really dangerous, if someone set a fire at the entrance there would be no escape for the rough sleepers.
if in London it would be worth several million with that riverside view !
Where even is this?
Hi Scott, If you watch the video before we go in the hole you can see where it is. Easy to find if you know Newcastle. Happy hunting
@@mission-abandoned I know Newcastle, lived and worked here 29 years yet I don't know where the hole is, that's why I'm asking.
@Michael Myke Thank you
"where even is this".
Not 'even' English.
@@Tinker1950 yes it is John.
Where exactly in Newcastle is this mate?
Skinnerburn Road, between the Queen Elizabeth Bridge (Metro bridge) and the King Edward VII Bridge (Railway bridge).
@@zerocompanyhq thanks mate

Near the life center innit?
its still open
In the north east
not many people no about this place
Used by dirty folks from the pink triangle at night and day for bottom fun.
Aye, best to stick to daytime & shout
Please leave people's homeless shelters alone.
