You have can great ideas on how to do what we want. Been binge watching all your shows. I especially love how you give tips on what colors NOT to do together. Saved us many times. • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  10 місяців тому

      You are welcome... I love to help others have fun and success with this art ... as for setting the colors... I use Procion Dyes and the soda ash that I soak the 100% cotton tees in is what activates the dyes... then time and or heat will set the dyes ... I leave mine to 'Batch' (sit with dye on them) for a minimum of 24 hours at 70F, but I prefer to add a little bit of heat and leave them to sit for 48 hours ... I batch mine in tubs with lids so I can move them around easily ... in the winter, I set them near a heat vent and in the summer time, I set the bins out on the shed roof in the sun
      Here is my Beginner Playlist, it has many videos that are helpful when starting out in this art :

    Can the same effect be achieved with elastic bands? I'm an absolute beginner, and any answer would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!😊

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  7 місяців тому

      yes you can, make sure they get wrapped really tight... also, it will help keep the white if when you get ready to dye the tee, add some plain water to the banded area... if it is wet with plain water, there is less of a chance of the dye soaking in there... also, do not add dye directly over the lightening bolt area ✌️ .... I do it with the sinew, but the sinew is pulled much tighter than you can get the bands on there 😉 Have fun and I wish you success!!

    Gran amigo! Buenas noches! No se supone que ant es de teñir hay que dejar remojando la prenda en soda Ash, para luego teñirla? Y por qué entonces al seco?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 роки тому

      Sí, cuando uso Procion Dyes, primero remojo las camisetas de algodón en ceniza de sosa, luego las ato y las tiño, pero ese es solo un método de muchos... Mientras tenga tela de algodón, ceniza de sosa y tintes Procion todos juntos cuando 'batch' la tela, entonces está bien, pero el orden y los métodos son muchos...
      aquí hay un video donde hago una demostración de remojo antes de atar, después de atar y diez después de atar y teñir: ua-cam.com/video/rkmAQxOu52A/v-deo.html
      También teñiré las camisetas mientras estén húmedas, pero si las ato bien con tendones, a veces las dejo secar primero para obtener una mejor saturación... pero por lo general lo rocío ligeramente con ceniza de sosa para que los tintes se empapen mejor

    Why do you dry the soaked shirts I thought you were supposed to dye the fabric while its damp with soda ash do you get better results by drying a few days?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 роки тому +1

      there are many ways to dye the fabric... once the fabric is soaked in the soda ash, the pH level is there whether you keep it damp or let it dry ... most times I do fold, tie and dye while the tee is barely damp with soda ash ... BUT, if I have folded a mandala type fold where I have many layers of fabric, or have tied it very tightly with sinew, then I like to leave it to dry some ... when there is a slight bit of moisture in a tee and, then you stack several layers together and then you tie it tightly, that slight bit of moisture will 'block' the dyes from reaching the fabric ... the fabric can only hold so much liquid, once it is 'full' then the rest of the liquid will just over flow... SO, if you have soda ash liquid trapped deep within the layers of fabric, the dye will not be able to soak in there, so then you will have white spots
      so, with this design, I was tying parts of it tightly, so I let it dry some so I would get better dye penetration/saturation
      so for me, I just go with the flow of things and how they work.... the only 'Rule' I know of when tie-dyeing with Procion Dyes, if there was a rule, is you must have cotton(or other natural fiber), dye and soda ash all together before you batch the tee or tapestry as the soda sh activates the dyes... I hope this helps ✌🏻

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you 🙏 and you are welcome .... as for the drying thing, that just makes for better saturation when I have things tied tightly with sinew .... so not letting them dry may just mean there is a bit of tee that does not get dyed .... but this can also be part of the pattern... sometime Is do dye it damp and have the extra color in there.... so it is good either way... just know what you want and go for it

    I'm curious why you let it dry? I was under the impression that if it dries, and/or becomes cold, the Soda Ash deactivates.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 роки тому +1

      I let it dry for better saturation ... and no the soda ash does not deactivate... once you have soaked the tee, you are good with the soda ash... it can be hot or cold or dry and it will still work... the soda ash raises the pH level of the tee, that is what activates the dyes.... so once the dye comes into contact with the soda ash, it activates and if it is on cotton, then it starts to form a chemical bond ... heat will speed this process up, or time will do it...
      I like to have both heat and time, so I batch for 48 hours and add heat to the process by stacking the tubs with lids (you do not want the dyes to dry out or they stop bonding, that may be what you were mis told) near a heat vent, or out in the sun : ua-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/v-deo.html

    Are your dyes thickened? I lost control with the liquid dye.🙁

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 роки тому +1

      not now... I used to work with slightly thickened dyes, but now I just use regular dyes, unless it is the black I use for outlining, then that dye is thickened and here is how I make thick water for really thick dyes :ua-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/v-deo.html
      but, if your dyes are getting away from you, you can thicken them just a little bit to slow their spread ... I do not remember my exact recipe, but I made a LOT of dye water at a time when I dyed everyday ... I used 5 tbsp of alginate in 5 gallons of water ... plus salt and urea, I think 4-5 cups of each.... mix it the same way as the really thick water... HOT water and mix the Sodium Alginate first, make sure it is completely blended before adding anything else, I let mine sit for a bit and then came back and blended it some more... then rub some between your fingers ... it should feel smooth... any lumps means it needs more blending .... and you could make a smaller amount ... this mix would go bad after sitting for a couple months... that is why I stopped with the slightly thickened dyes ... I hope this helps ✌🏻

      it is called Sinew, but really what we use it is an artificial sinew.... a polyester waxed string that is very strong, it is use in many crafts .... but in tie-dye, you can pull it tightly to block the dyes from getting to areas of the tee and the waxiness of the string will lock on itself when pulled tight enough ... I buy mine from Dixie : www.dixiegunworks.com/index/page/product/product_id/3340/product_name/MI0310+Artificial+Sinew+-+70+lb.+8oz.+Spool+-+300+Yards

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 роки тому +1

      when you say dye separating... do you mean settling in the bottom of the bottle?? I know lemon yellow does this .... this usually means the dyes have not dissolved all the way .... mixing them with Luke warm water can help them dissolve better....
      as for the amount of dye powder.... dharma recommends 4 tsp for 16 oz of dye, I use 5-6 tsp for 16 oz for most colors and 10-12 for black ..... so I do not think that is your issue... unless you are using more than what I listed here
      I would try the warm water and blend it more... then I pour mine though a fine mesh filter (different than the strainer I show in my dye mixing video, I got a better one) this catches any of the un-dissolved dyes... when I pour mine though this filter, if there is very much dye left in the filter, I tap it back into the dye mixing cup, add more Luke warm water and blend some more.... the goal for me is to pour the dye through the fine mesh filter and have no residue left... sometimes there are a couple specks and that is fine ...
      this is the type filter I use : Dye Strainer : amzn.to/3sRv1It ~ I receive credit if you use this link
      one other thing, Urea is supposed to help dissolve the dyes better.... I use it sometimes, but not always, so if you want to try this, I just add 1-2 tbsp of urea in with the water and dye powder and blend all together .... I used to make urea water to mix my dyes with, but it does go bad over time, so if you do it this way and the dye water starts to have an ammonia smell, then it is time to make new urea water as it has gone bad
      I hope this helps with your issue.... BUT, if I did not understand your question, ten please ask a new one rather than reply to this one as I will see it faster that way... if you reply, then it may be a while before I see it... so ask new and even refer to this one so I remember 😉✌🏻

      it was 90/10 cotton/poly ... it is a Hanes Ultimate Cotton Hoodie ... the other one I used to use before I found the Hanes was Gildan Ultra Cotton, and it was 80/20 and dyed up great ....
      it is important to be mostly cotton to get the better colors.... BUT, a 50/50 hoodie does not mean it will not work, it just means the colors may look lite or faded.... but it depends mostly on the cotton content of the shell(outer part) of the hoodie

    why do you dry the shirt in this video?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  Рік тому

      sometimes when I tie things with sinew, letting the tee dry before I dye it will help with dye saturation... and for this I wanted just a thin white line left ... so dyeing dry helps as the liquid dyes will spread through the dry fabric where as damp fabric is does not travel much or very fast
      One thing though with letting a tee dry before you dye it, sometimes the dyes will want to roll off the fabric rather than soak in, for this I will lightly spray the tee with soda ash... this 'breaks' the surface tension for the top of the fabric and allows the dyes to soak in ✌🏻
