- The first portion of this video shows a man oblivious to a locomotive coming at him, the rest shows a CSX crew switching the Lehigh Cement plant on Dock St. in Richmond, VA, in a very rare daylight move on very rickety track. This branch has since been ripped up and abandoned.
Not only do the railway own those tracks and I believe 20 feet around it. They were there first. Before those apartment and condos were there. I think it’s stupid how people wanna complain about living near a railroad but build houses and apartments near the railroad.

@@IronHide3910 Not an engineer, just looked up the general specifications of a modern diesel engine. 2,200 gallon capacity, I imagine a full day's work would burn through it.
If you have actual data on how much a diesel locomotive uses, you could just post that, instead of being an ass. :)
I think this might be a privately owned spur, presumably owned by the cement plant. The RR has the right to operate there, of course, under whatever the service agreement is. It's not really clear if the organizers are setting up near a public crossing... legally complicated, but really the decent thing would be to move out of the way because who wants to argue with a diesel locomotive?

This reminds me of something a few years back in BC. There was a rail line that was still maintained, but was only reserves as a secondary junction in case of work on the main line. A bunch of luxury houses built along the side and were told line wasnt in service. While technically true, it was brought out of service and so all the stuff people built in the rail right of way got torn out. They all went and built potted gardens over the line!

LED lights are so cheap now that there is no excuse for not having front and rear flashing lights. Side reflectors on spokes are a good idea, too. Put them opposite the valve stem to balance the wheel. Reflectors on the heels of riding shoes helps. Generous use of reflective tape weighs almost nothing.

How stupid and self-centered can one be? Commerce trumps the marathon in importance everyday of the week. The engineer should have laid on the air horn until the dimwit woke up out of his coma and got out of the way. I would argue that train crews are not paid to move stupid pedestrians off of railway right of ways. Another option for the crew would have been for the engineer to stop the locomotive and refuse to move further until local law enforcement moved the idiots out of the way. Just my thoughts.

It is a crime actually to walk on tracks. Unless your absolutely positive the tracks are out of service then they are still private property and you can be charged for trespassing

Most folks only see the railroads at intersections, without ever giving thought to the crews and their work getting those loads to their final destinations. It's a lot of work, and as seen here, the track condition can vary considerably- I'm amazed how smoothly that engine handled the bumps. Thanks for posting it here!!

A couple of years back I was biking on the York Heritage Rail Trail, in PA. The trail is technically "rail adjacent" as opposed to a true rail trail. As I head south, near the Maryland border, I start to see caution signs about it being an "active railroad". I laugh and make some sarcastic comment to the wife, since the rails look a lot like the ones in this video. I pointed out that the rail tops were beat down in a mushroom shape, had "Bethlehem steel 1909" stamped on them, a lot of the joiner plates are missing half of the bolts, tie plates and spikes laying everywhere. Plus a huge percentage of the ties are simply missing, or rotted to the point that they no longer support anything. I'm rounding a blind curve, I nearly shit myself and let out a little girl scream, as a diesel engine hits the horn! It is coming toward us, at a walk, pulling a few tourist cars.
I was stunned. Something I would expect in a third world tourist spot, but pulling a few hundred thousands pounds of metal, full of clueless humans, down tracks that are literally "returning to the earth" in the USA, was a real eye opener.
This is one time that the CSX should've called upon law enforcement to clear their right of way. Kudos to the CSX crew whom were so patient with that stupid woman and boys.
Hey marathon organizers, here's a great idea... don't set your marathon up next to railroad tracks!

The guy driving the post in front of a locomotive needs his ass kicked. At least where I live, the local race coordinators would contact us (the railroad) to discuss safety items like this. You can't just go and put in a pedestrian crossing wherever you feel like it. The legalities are mind boggling! Putting those posts foul of the track is illegal and unsafe also. Stupid people!

we got them here in the uk as well, they think its ok to close roads of so they can run down them and it doesnt matter if youve got to go to work....they must run right there.
Here in the netherlands it's and absolute shitshow they runnon the street cycle on the wrong side just so they don't have to cross the road later and drive with smart phones in their hands thru red lights. But anyways i always go *really* close by them on my bicycle or stop right infront of them with my bike that almost always causes them to go onto the sidewalk, yes i am late

A lot of the old line engineers I worked with on the PRR would have laid on the air horn and kept coming. Track walking trespassers got the hint and cleared the rails.
There is a difference between then and now. Then, people who were walking on the ROW didn't have the distraction of headphones playing loud music. Thus they could generally hear the horn and GTF out of the way. Today some of these people play their music so loud they can't hear the train horn over their music.

This track is no longer in service. The tracks that used to cross State Route 5 near Almond Creek and go to Richmond Guano Co., and Lehigh Cement, have been taken out of service and mostly removed. The portion in this film clip is now the Virginia Capital Trail, which extends from Richmond to Williamsburg. It's a bike trail that parallels Route 5 (more or less) down to Williamsburg, VA, about 60 miles or so ...
Thanks for the information. If I remember correctly it was also once an interchange with Southern Railway. This memory is from 1973 when I was a trainee working between Keysville and West Point. Richmond was a hotbed of bad and unique track at that time.

Hey someone actually gets it! You are correct, contrary to what the auto and oil industries want people to believe. The railroads are what enabled the creation of most of the major city's in this country that we call the United States. Sadly now most people in the United States don't even know, and in many cases they also don't care about the railroads and their importance. The Quiet Zones that have been enacted in some towns and city's in the US are good example's of people who neither understand the importance of the railroads nor do they care. I volunteer at a railroad museum where we preserve and operate a lot of historic railroad equipment. Which has resulted in myself developing a better understanding of the importance as well as the living legacy that the modern railroads are continuing to this day.
Like when my friend at school moved to a big fancy house near an airport, and then from that day on she wouldn`t shut up about the "horrible noise" and how she "hadn't slept in months"
Weekend Randomizer - In '57 we moved out in the area of the airport. Most planes were prop, piston engines. We were miles from the airport and no runway pointed toward us.
Then the jets came. Turbojets, long before fanjets. They were LOUD. Still, they were far away and rarely flew over near us. Then came the airport expansion. New runways to accommodate the bigger four turbojet planes. The new runways sent planes over to either side of our house. Roaring on takeoff, screaming on landing. No fanjets yet.
Then as fanjets came in, the noise levels began to lessen. Finally the FAA allowed localities to require much steeper climbing to get the noise down.
It really bugs me. It is the same in rural areas,where people receive permits to build houses next to farms, and once they live there they start to complain about noise and smells. I say spray the houses with manure, that ll teach them.

Sorry for the late comment but I just saw this video.
Its astonishing to me so many people think they are tough as nails and assume the train will stop for them. Even more so the audacity of people who get upset because today these railroad tracks have a train on them against their personal agenda... Luckily for this guy there was a conductor on the point and the crew was operating in accordance with restricted speed so they could stop before becoming a hazard. But they shouldn't have had to stop or even slow down.
I do not have the pleasure of encountering these special people every day but I do get to encounter them often enough to know that there is no answer I could provide that will satisfy them and quite often, I just minimize my interaction with them and go about my duties as if they are not there.
As for this plant, well it certainly looks like they have seen better business in the past. At least there is a shoving platform for the conductor, that's nice!
Also what kind of telephoto lens have you got for that camera? Jeez it looks like you could count the hairs on a flea's back at a hundred yards with that thing.

Yep. Virtually every small town on the Prairies were a siding and a station every 7 or 8 miles or so alng a rail line. Some grew, some were nothing more than a little portable station, a grain elevator, a few houses for the grain elevator and railway employees, and maybe a cattle loading corral. CP and CN practically built the West single handedly and encouraged Europeans to come homestead and farm.

Remember we are in an era where only 25% of people know how to change a car tire, 15% of young people believe that government money is just printing that all the problems are over, there are many people who believe that train brakes like cars. In my country a person died because he got in front of a trailer trying to force a truck trailer on a highway to stop. I think stupidity will be the cause of the population drop

I’ve see R/W- right of way total widths of 50’, 66’,100’, 200’ and also non-standard widths both less than and greater than the above widths. Even if not railroad owned there are federal and state laws concerning clearance envelopes around tracks.

As a Millenial, runner and bicyclist... Be advised that some of us are mindful of what is around us and courteous to professionals doing their job, especially if they are truckers and engineers.

The tracks were there first not the marathon and you cant always assume that the operation is always at the same time every day as demonstrated here.

Tracks are gone. That train was just picking up those 5 cars from when the plant shut down. They were parked there for years on the small wooden bridge @ the cement plant.

This guy in the black shirt i can tell he does seem to really care about the train at all. When a Train is present you get out of the way because their is a good chance you may not live. Delaying the train is not a Good thing once u delay them they will be behind the rest of the day
That and it can mean a large fine for trespassing on railroad property.
+Justin Little & Robotechnology101 You’re both idiots. That was private (Lehigh Cement) property, *not railroad property*. The city-sponsored marathon workers were on a *public access road*. And, yes, railroads (who are not gods with unlimited privilege) occasionally have to cooperate with local workers and officials during large public events.

Your not listening to whats being said by people here. The marathon workers can do whatever they want on a public access road(because it is a "public road"). Except the story changes once your on or in their case very near active railroad tracks. The trains always have the right of way. It does not matter who owns the railroad tracks, they are still considered private property at all points except at designated railroad crossings with exception to when a train is occupying it. Personally I feel that it was and is a bad idea to do a marathon in a location like that, there are way too many hazards around railroad tracks main one being a tripping hazard.

In the future (presuming your hateful attitude doesn't get you killed beforehand), I think you'll find most railroad companies quite willing to cooperate.

Paul Mauser Right, but even then, my point was, in many cases, even abandoned or partially abandoned tracks are still owned by the rail company. So people shouldn't be mad when they do things with their own property.
rJay Stillwell Live near an old cement railway line. It's rusty all over but still in use by the industries near the local port.
Basic principle is; land costs money, if the track still exists, it's still in use.
HeaanLasai Yeah there is a track somewhat near where I live, the NECR Burlington subdivision is used I think at least three times a day and I think at night to but that track is rusty on top also..
Paul Rude Good example. I think it's interesting; we all know that industry is our lifeline. Without it we have no administrative jobs, no food, no homes. But when industry needs the right of way to work, we don't move out of the way.
5:55 This must be one of the newer, high speed rail tracks we hear about periodically. I can't understand why the train isn't going much faster on that wonderful, straight, well maintained track.... No potential risks of derailing here! Great job CSX!

railroad police are unnecessary, tracks are private property and therefore the railroad is allowed to defend it from those who would hinder the progress of the railroad, i.e. allow natural selection to take place

Alex Gonzalez: should be maintained not needs to be maintained the fact that it is now abandoned means it wasn’t generating adequate revenue. The only maintenance done was probably after a derailment, that constitutes a need. On Tracks such as these equipment stays on the rails because of tradition; changes in tradition cause derailments.

It is actually very easy to confuse the term "Running Track" with "Railroad Track". They both begin with the letter "R". Just like "Dumb" and "Dumber" sound "similar". So this is very easy to understand. Great video, great loco.
Around here, the railroads have gotten very strict with people trespassing on railroad property even with fishermen crossing the tracks to get to the river. Looking at this, I would suspect these people are trespassing on railroad property.
Them some ruddy, uneven tracks. They go any faster, they'd derail.

Always loved American trains, my father banned them from our train layout, he was a bit of a GWR purest and I can't blame him for not wanting his sons Amtrak Train to rock up in the middle of his 1950's Oxfordshire layout!

CSX should say "No more cement for you 'til you fix that track."
"that track" is inspected on a regular basis, per frequency prescribed by the FRA (Federal Railroad Administration). CSX would not agree to use the track unless minimum standards for track dimensions are met and adhered to by the industry they are serving. Due to the camera angle, any type of irregularities in the track are "visually amplified", so to speak. If you walked up to and stood alongside that track, it would look totally different. You wouldn't notice the irregularities as much. Keep in mind, this type of track (industry serving) is limited to 10mph speed. One would never see track conditions, such as this, on a high speed (or, in excess of 10mph), freight/passenger section of track anywhere in the world.
