After 50 years as a wordsmith and 30 years as a tech geek, starting visual design at 60 years old is stupendously challenging. Literally learning to draw, learning layout and typography (beyond "What cool font can I use here?") Intellectually I know that we only see the polished outcomes, not the raggedy work to get there, but seeing it laid out like this is so comforting and encouraging. Eager for part 2.
@Joseph Between COVID crushing my business, and serious health considerations, I'm essentially retired. Puttering with my old web skills, mostly involving *NIX scripting and geekery than visual stuff. I've created a few thousand digital pieces for my own enjoyment, but as a business, it never happened. But, with one lifelong health issue permanently resolved (search for hyperaldosteronism) and another heading for, if not resolution, at least abatement through sensible treatment, maybe I can give it another go. (Right now, walking across a room is a monumental challenge; 6 months from now, I expect to be back to my daily 3-mile bike ride, a few hours in my woodshop, and regular design work, for money or not.)
I think this video should be shown in every high school art class. Yes, kids, your fascination with art mixed with hard work can take you to the top. Thanks for sharing your journey Matthew, I gave you a shout out on our Nomatic Instagram story!
This is inspiring and terrifying. I jumped from art school to art school, studying ceramics, animation and now graphic design while being a digital painter all my life. Design is the way to go but man Im 26 and I feel so behind. I feel frustrated that I know Im capable, yet too scared and self-judgmental to do anything risky. I just need to stop caring and just ... create.
I feel you man, I'm terrified too. I'm a motion designer, same age as you, and seeing Matthew's works makes me realize how mediocre I am. Gonna have my ego smashed watching part 2 lol
Mathew... im just stuck, and see your work to understand how you transform yourselve into this great designer that you are now, inspires me to be a better designer, just like you. Thank you, a big hug from chile
I had zero expectations while clicking on this video as most of these portfolio videos just explain the work done in there. But you engaged me throughout the video and thank you for sharing your experiences.
I’ve been struggling a lot recently with feeling impatient about my design career and how long it takes to master things, but this video made me feel a lot better seeing your gradual progression over years and that designers aren’t just nothing to perfect in no time. Also, seeing how much you accomplished in one year at the end really set a fire under me! Love this video and your story telling as always Matthew 💓
Thank you for opening up about how your families celebration of your success put so much expectation on you. That is absolutely something that I felt crippled my creativity, it is difficult to explore when failure seems to undermine everyone’s view of you.
Learning the tools versus learning how to communicate an idea using those tools - I am over 40 and looking at going to university for the first time, and that comment really sums up how I feel about what I am about to embark on. #excited
The pinball animation was crazy, i mean, you made it yourself by that time, and it was so clean, so nice. I look forward for you to explain more about it, i hope so. Great work.
Thank you for sharing Mathew, it really is appreciated. It made me think about a couple of years ago when I went to my Mums place to clear out drawings from an A1 portfolio. I originally studied general art and design before specialising in graphic design, so I learnt many design disciplines. Motion design wasn't around back then but what I found after photographing pieces of photography. life drawing, fashion and illustration etc that I was able to take some of those elements together with new digital art I was creating at that time to create a number of montage stories of me then and now and how passions I had with dance, culture, fashion and tai chi all gelled together. Only someone who knows me would understand the details within them but I felt such a buzz from doing that series. Just goes to show, you can still utilise pieces of work from long ago. Everything can become current again ;) I'm going to watch part 2 now. Thank you again.
I first came across Matthew's content when i saw that video of him redoing his office space. Pleasantly surprised to see how interesting his career has been! Also i gotta say it, proud to see a fellow Pinoy prospering
I am beyond speechless. To see you spending all the time and effort from 1998 to 2007, to become what you are now, is fantastic! I've only learned design for 2 years, and the future terrifies me.
I am transitioning my career into design and I would like to thank all the effort Futur team is putting into making those steps easier. Many thanks, you are wonderful!
Awesome loop and concept idea for an animated music video 👍 I'm learning motion myself at Hud uni in my graphic design degree. I will be looking at Futur for learning in my year 2 Semester and spare time around my placement. Great video 👍
I'm glad you guys are uploading on this channel a lot more frequently these days.. Please keep on making these kinds of different contents! I also love your logo therapy videos but it is nice to see some variety in your latest videos :)
I loved watching these two videos. It is very hard to know where you want to be or what you want to do, but I guess not even those that are doing amazing things knew they would be there! This was the inspiration I needed. I have been doubtful going into this career due to its stereotypes, but this seems like such a beautiful thing and it's always changing!
So great to see the process. Everybody post their best thing out in social media but in real life not everything works out for the first or second time. Seeing that how you developed and reached where are you now is really comforting to those who are strungling to find their voice or field. Thanks. Keep up the good work guys!
This was amazing to see. While not taking away from any of your own projects you presented, it's interesting hear about Chris Do as a teacher before you really knew him. That pinball motion project blew me away, in both idea and execution!
Wow... thanks for taking us on this retrospective journey. When you pulled out the ZIP disks, I had a rush of nostalgia come over me as I remembered my time in graphic design school; using those disks to transfer my files back and forth from the lab to home. Memories of many late nights, lots of coffee, and good friends!
This video is a wake-up call to what i really want to do in the journey of my art life. As also a Filipino, i got inspired and realized that nothing is impossible to those who endure and work hard for their journey. Thank you, I’m only 16, but I hope one day to be as successful as you.
WOW! That was you at school? holycrap dude.. The results speak for itself.. all that hard word clearly paid of, gongratz! I can't imagine how skilled the students at artcenter must be. o_o
Hi Matthew, I really liked the pinball motion graphics, brilliant work. I've been a designer for a long time and currently learning about MD... but have a long way to go! It's so great that you got to work with Chris at that point in your development.
that is a really well taught story! and although you only talk about your own story there is so many interesting points that we can relate to (at least i can relate to)
feel so awsome,to see what the thing is when you were young, there are so many bed, dream, sleep,in your animation works, you are such a gentle and smooth guy.
Our style paths cross in 2002! My art and music style was very similar as yours, so glad to see this. My 14 year old self doesn't feel as lonely anymore haha!
This is very inspirational work man, thank you for putting it out there and showing us the amount of work and iterations it takes to be a master of your craft!
thanks to share your story with us , it is amazing , you show me the road, sometimes you have an ideas , and think it is can not be true, it is a little vice in your head , try to follow this voice sometimes the road be in light and all times be no light , and need somebody to take your hand and help you to try to walk again , this person is you thanks.
This was really inspiring. Thank you for making this video. It's really great how you have saved some much of your work. Makes me wanna take action an do something right now and build my own pile of projects. Keep it up, really love your content.
This video inspired me a lot. Thank you for making this video! Sometimes, I questioned myself will I really get to be better and better on the design? After I watched this video I got the answer, your design journey inspired me to think a design journey is a valuable experience that has accumulated designer's strength. I should cherish it.
This is absolutely amazing. I'm a writer but I'm trying to get more and more into design and photography because I want to be able to teach journalism as a whole someday. I was feeling a little confused about my decision and future recently, mainly because I have to wait an entire year before I can join my grad school due to COVID-19. This video really helped. Thank you!
