  • Having questions in your mind about screening tests for cancer? Should you go for it? In this informative video, Dr. Vinod Gore from Sahyadri hospital will shed some light and answer all of these questions regarding the Screening tests for cancer.
    00:00 Introduction: Cancer screening tests
00:32 What is cancer screening test
-It is done in those people who are not previously been diagnosed with Cancer.
-Cancer needs to be diagnosed in the early stages to ensure the patient's healthy recovery and effective treatment.
-We can think about diagnosing cancer even before it is prominent or in very early stages to effective treatment. But that's not the case. Therefore, there is screening tests to be done for every cancer.
02:30 Is Cancer screening successful in early stages?
It is not successful in the early stages. There are several reasons to it.
-Screening test is done for asymptomatic patients.
-When mortality rate is very low as compared to detection rate, the test founds to be invalid.
    - Thyroid papilloma carcinoma has 99.99% cure rate. In many people it is in dormant phase. It may be asymptomatic throughout the lifetime.
-Such dormant cancer detection is not useful. Therefore, cancer screening is not done in all cancers.
-PAP SMEAR Screening test is done in Carcinoma Cervix. Positive patients have a higher mortality rate as compared to other cancers.
06:40 Diagnostic packages offering Cancer Screening
-Many diagnostic packages offer Cancer Screening tests. Many packages include CA-125 Test for Cancer diagnosis.
-CA-125 is not even a Diagnostic test. It is unable to detect Ovarian Cancer. But it is done in many cases.
-CA-19.9 test is done for Gall-Bladder Test. CA -19.9 is also not even a screening test. It is also not able to detect cancer.
    07:54 Necessary Screening tests
-Breast cancer screening is done through Mammography test.
-Cervix cancer screening is done through a test named PAP-Smear.
-Prostate cancer screening in males which is done through test called PSA Blood test.
-Colon Cancer Screening is important after the age of 50 which is done through Colonoscopy for early detection.
08:47 Why Screening is important in Some Cancers only?
-Screening for cancers for which we do not have solid treatment is unfruitful. Screening for cancers which are not harmful enough to cause any damage is also unfruitful. E.g. -Thyroid cancer has a cure rate of 99.999%. It is not necessary to have a screening test for thyroid cancer.
-Breast cancer, Cervix Cancer has high mortality, and they have Line of Treatment ready for them therefore Cancer Screening is done for such cancers only.
    11:45 PET CT worth It?
-PET CT is not cancer screening Test. CT scan is not able to screen cancer. Only certain approved screening tests can identify cancer.
    Conclusion:
-Cancer Screening is not required for all types of cancer. Tests like CA-125 & CA-19.9 or PET-CT are insignificant as they are unable to detect any kind of cancer.
-It is not necessary to have a screening test for cancers like thyroid cancer which has a cure rate of 99.999%.
-Cancer Screening is useful only in certain type of cancers such as Breast Cancer, Prostate cancer, Etc. which are having significant treatment and are having high mortality.
