This dongyue temple is known for its many statues. Dongyue dadi was in charge of the taoist version of hell which has 76 departments (the judges seem located in mount taishan). Each hall had a judge, usually 2 helpers, and 10 characters representing the punishers and those being punished, so theoretically, there should be about 76 x 13 statues just for the taoist hell part. Due to lack of space, 16 departments share 8 halls and there are only 68 halls. So maybe for the taoist hell, there are 68 x 13 = 884 statues. I heard there is a prostitute department, so there is a hall with statues of prostitutes being judged in hell. The dongyue temple also has other popular taoist gods and seems to have more than 1,000 statues in 1 area. The buddhist version of hell is much simpler and has only 10 judges which can be seen in other temples and museums. I heard many taoists follow the buddhist version of hell bec of the buddhist influence on taoism. I have seen 1 buddhist hell book which has about 50 or more types of punishments for different sins, so these are sort of similar to the taoist hell of 76 departments.
