  • This Chrysler Australia 1972 E49 Charger's 450HP Naturally Aspirated 265 Hemi Six packs a mean punch on the racetrack, competing in the Group Nc Historic Touring Car category . The Valiant Charger E49 R/T was always seen as the underdog in series production car racing during the early 70's here in Aus, competing against some fierce V8 opposition. The E49's 265 Cubic Inch inline six made 302 Horsepower stock, and ran a very brisk 14.4 Sec quarter mile, even while struggling for traction on a narrow production tyre. At one point this iconic Australian Muscle Car was the fastest accelerating six-cylinder powered production car in the world, and was famous for its trio of 45mm Weber carburettors hanging off the side of the engine, an intake system that was prototyped and developed at Weber in Italy. Although the Hemi designation is not completely correct with the engine only featuring a semi Hemispherical combustion chamber, Chrysler Australia used the mighty Hemi 426 branding as leverage, as it was after all a relative in the Mopar performance family.
    At Master of Machines, we love cars, in fact, we love anything with wheels or an engine, from American Muscle Cars to Australian Muscle Cars, Race Cars and Classic Cars of all kinds and even Barn Finds. If it's fast, powerful, restored or hidden away in hibernation then we'll cover it, and in most cases, we'll even drive them!

      well at least we were able to reap the benefits of it here.have owned 2 265's. first was in a VJ Charger 'Sportsman" pack..the other was in a CL Chrysler Regal Station wagon... the surprise package for me though was another VJ Charger I had. only had the little 215 Hemi in it, yet that thing embarrassed quite a few V8's in the time I owned it..as far as I know it was stock, yet that little motor was an absolute screamer that revved its heart out and flew along.

    Having lived on both continents during the Muscle Car era, I have to say the Valiant Charger R/T is arguably the best of the lot. Some of the Mustangs are undoubtedly great & the beautiful XB Falcon is more famous. Chrysler was cash strapped, but the Charger has the correct proportions and powerplant that giving the Charger R/T the perfect balance. Not overly wide like the 'Cuda + more fit & trim than America's beasts.

      @@autodidact537 no Chrysler hemi head is actually half a sphere. The early ones were only close to it. A true hemi head's large volume needs a longer stroke to allow a decent compression ratio, but long strokes aren't optimal for racing. Alternatively, high dome pistons have poor swirl effects and makes for a motor that is less efficient and harder to meet pollution requirements. They're not the ultimate design- crossflow and overhead cam would be better, but as they were, the fuel economy was excellent, had loads of power and torque, and were reliable. Not bad for what was originally meant to be a truck motor.

    The E49 RT Charger was a much underrated car. They went like stink but suffered from the Vince Valiant thing at the time, you were either a Holden or Ford man or a try-hard. A mate of mine turned up with an E49 one day in 1977 and it made us all sit up and take notice though. You had to take a spare pair of undies when you went in that bastard. Bathurst was to good for them though, the mighty 265 ran out of puff and the V8s just kept on pulling. The XU1s were a lot lighter which is what made them pocket rockets with their magnificent 186 and 202 motors. Jeff

      If it was anything like mine, the panel carrying the lower door hinge rusted out and the sear back broke - I also had 4 wheel studs break on a 300 km trip. A mongrel that didn't give me more than 18 mpg until I put a Holley 350 on it. It went sideways on me just coming out of the used car lot and since it was my wife's car, i went home and immediately put two more springs on the throttle linkage. The car was fun and looked crazy good and great fun playing with the front torsion bars and jacking up the rear with air shocks. Standard Mag wheels and nearly 30 mpg in highway mode. I didn't mention the 265 cu inch six that eventually i had to carry spare spark plugs for since it wouldn't get 300 km without oiling them up

  • @79tazman

    I would love to get my hands on one of those 265 CI engine the thing is I got to go down under to get one because Chrysler here in North America did not make them 170,198 and the 225 slants yeah but not the 265 and that's the problem. I have played with every Mopar engine except the 265 and I need to get one I have a nice 68 Dart to toss in into and everyone will think it's a slant until I pop the hood and surprise them with the 265 instead

    • @chrisjohnston9454
      @chrisjohnston9454 3 роки тому +1

      The big problem you will run into is that the bonnet line for a slant 6 is lower than the bonnet line for the hemi. It's a straight up fit with the right k-frame, here in Australia the clutch is almost the same between the two (throw out bearings are different) and if you're using the gearbox from the slant 6 (if you're going manual) you'll need the bellhousing from the hemi and have it redrilled to suit.

    • @rossbrumby1957
      @rossbrumby1957 3 роки тому

      @@chrisjohnston9454 not so. I had an AP5 as a swamp car in 1995. Dropped a 245 2bbl in on the slant k member, left side bolted straight in, right side I welded in a straight rectangle tube wirh a hole for the engine mount to bolt to. 3 on the tree manual, same mechanical clutch linkages- no drilling. Only engine length meant no mechanical fan. Height was completely fine. I also cut 800mm out of the middle of the car, cut and joined the doors to work less window frames. Back seat now the driver's seat. Tailshaft now 500mm between unis- only just didn't knock (vj diff welded under springs for the 10r15's to clear flared out guards)
