ABOUT PORTER JUNCTION | CHESTERTON, INDIANA
Welcome to Porter Junction, Chesterton, Indiana, a major convergence of several lines, including Norfolk Southern's Chicago Line, the former New York Central (NYC) "Water Level Route" mainline west to the eponymous Windy City. Diverging at Porter Junction are two mainlines north into Michigan: Amtrak's Michigan Line and CSX's Grand Rapids Subdivision. Also diverging is CSX's Porter Subdivision, which heads west to connect with the Indiana Harbor Belt (IHB) at Ivanhoe.
There are about 84 trains per 24 hours on the Chicago Line, and the top speed is 79.9 MPH. This line hosts two of Amtrak's intercity services, the "Lake Shore Limited" between Chicago and New York City/Boston, and the "Floridian" (formerly the "Capitol Limited") between Chicago and Miami via Washington, D.C.
Amtrak's Michigan Line and CSX's Porter Sub are two segments of the former Michigan Central (MC) mainline between Detroit and Chicago/Joliet. The Michigan Line sees Amtrak's "Blue Water" (to Port Huron) and "Wolverine" (to Pontiac), two of the three "Michigan Services". The route has been heavily rebuilt and upgraded, with a top speed of 110 MPH. Meanwhile, top speed on the Porter Sub is 40 MPH. There are about 10 trains per 24 hours on the Michigan Line.
The Grand Rapids Subdivision is the former Pere Marquette (PM) mainline towards Grand Rapids, MI, and hosts Amtrak's eponymous "Pere Marquette" (the third "Michigan Service") to said city. (There are plans for the "Pere Marquette" to move to the Michigan Line, after a new connection between the two lines is constructed to the north at New Buffalo, MI.) Top speed on the Grand Rapids Sub is 70 MPH, and there are about six trains per 24 hours.
The cameras are located at approximately MP 482.1 of the through track which is the NS Chicago line.
    GEO location: 41°36'48.11"N 87° 4'29.48"W
