I am 71 years old with gray, fine, straight hair. I have been looking for a way to get some wave in my hair without using heat as heat turns my hair yellow. I found out about CG on Facebook, which lead me to UA-cam. I have watched several different videos over the past week. Today I took the leap and tried the program as I understand it. I was delighted when I was able to get a wave in my hair that has lasted for several hours. I am hoping that I will eventually achieve curls. Of all the videos I watched I have found yours to be the most relatable for me as we have similar hair and you explain things very well. Thank You
Terrific! Never too late! Keep up the CG efforts, keep a journal (b/c it gets hard to remember what things you may have done slightly different). And keep experimenting and I suspect that you'll find some stronger waves once your hair has gotten healthier in several months!
Yes, girl, YES!! I have found I don't ever squish to condish or use a leave in 🙈 It weighs my hair down so much!!! I rake in products, comb through my hair after they've all been applied and then scrunch just once. I plop for like 2.5 seconds only so I can wash my face and moisturize before diffusing my hair. Pinappling and deep conditioning overnight is a complete nightmare for my hair!! Wavy Curly...2c/3a is a whole different world of curly girl life!
I love your videos! You have taught me so much already! Also, thank you for not editing/ putting all kinds of sound effecs/ background music - this is so much nicer to watch! 😍
I have been working with the CG method for about a year and have learned some of these same things the hard way. I have hair similar to yours and this does change the game which I didn't know when I started. I'm sure this video will help many wavey curlies out there get the results they are looking for without the steep learning curve.
As a wavy, I really appreciate your channel. You really experiment and try new things- not just products but techniques- and don't follow the curly girl "party line" (so to speak). A lot of the best known cgm advice works best for 3a+ hair and wavies just have to do something totally different sometimes! I don't co-wash- ever- and I use a sulfate shampoo every 1-2 months to clarify my hair and get rid of build-up. I will also use some products with drying alcohols (though nothing like hairspray, where it's near the top of the ingredients list) since my low-porosity hair is usually pretty well moisturized and can take a little. I also sometimes commit the cardinal sin of detangling my hair dry before I wash it. I use a wide tooth comb and I'm gentle, but I know it's still going to damage my hair a little bit (again, I'm low porosity, so my hair can handle a little rough treatment). I do it because it cuts down on the time it takes to wash my hair SIGNIFICANTLY. It's much easier to get all the little knots when I'm conditioning if I've gotten the bigger tangles before I step in the shower. I'm a big advocate of experimenting to see what works for you and your hair! The curly police are NOT going to arrest you if you try out a product with silicone in it! ;)
I don't put any kind of towel or tshirt on my head. I wrap a pillowcase around my shoulders to catch some drips. I shower and fully wet my hair every day. My scalp can take not washing it for days but I can't refresh my waves/curls without starting from scratch. Good thing I can diffuse it in a few minutes on low!
I just found this channel last week, also a year late. I have the same hair type too, and I've watched all of the videos here, some multiple times. FitKat Style, if you still come here and read comments, we'd love to see some new videos with any updates that you have!
HI FitKat, Everything that you shared I agree with for my hair. My hair is a lot like yours, only more fine. I have a very hard time with products overwhelming and weighing down my hair, and I have finally gotten a way of diluting styling gel to where I can spray it onto my hair that is partially dried. Also, I don't squish to condish ever! My hair does not need moisture. I started making my own version of flaxseed gel with a few things added and I dilute so much that I can squirt it on my hair. So far, my flaxseed spray works better for my hair than any other products that I have tried so far. I'll keep looking. Thanks FitKat.
I love how creative you are! That's what it's all about when getting to know what your hair likes and what it doesn't and how you can modify things! Great ideas! Thanks for sharing so others can be inspired!
My hair is very much like yours - low density, high porosity and above my shoulders. This has been tremendously helpful. I already use some of the suggestions in your video. I just started using mousse and find a big difference. Gel just wasn’t doing it for me. I live in Canada and it is very cold this winter. I don’t use any products with glycerin. My routine is: low poo, conditioner and rinse it out, gently squeeze most of the excess water out of my hair, use the same conditioner and lightly squish in, lightly apply oil and then mousse. I do not plop and ry to avoid the whole towel thing entirely. So that is what works for me so far this winter. Warmer weather is a whole other story 😉
Hi, I’m from Canada too and have just started to wear my hair curly. What products are you using as I am struggling to find products that enhance my wave and curls but doesn’t leave it crunchy and stuck together. I use AG recoil, but need something to keep the hold. I’d appreciate any recommendations. Thanks
Is it just me or is this so complicated it feels completely vain to spend so much time and effort. Every one of these tips she says: “I do do this, but not that much.” Cant there be one easy tip?
I’m so glad I found you and this video! I’m 5 months in to my curly journey and was starting to think it just wasn’t possible to get my low density hair to look half-decent. (And everyone on UA-cam seemed to have much denser hair!) I can see that you have low density similar to me, but your hair looks wonderful! There is hope! 😉 I already realised that plopping was doing weird things to my hair but I’m excited to try out some of these tips to see if I can finally improve how my hair looks. Thank you! 😊
Ohhhh you have helped me soo much. We are hair twins, we live in the same area and we are close to the same age... thank you soo much again!! I was close to throwing in the towel! I’m going to try these tips!! Please keep making videos!!!
Great video, as usual! And I subscribe every single advice you gave. I have wavy low dense and high porous fine hair, and I recognize my hair behavior in everything you say. Instead, I didn’t understand it wouldn’t be good for me to squish-to-condish and scrunch so much! But it makes sense: in fact, my clumps always skip away in every direction and refuse tu stay togheter... Thank you!!
We have very similar hair. These are all points I’ve been noticing while I’ve been experimenting with the curly girl method but modified for wavy hair.
I'm a new subscriber and loving your videos! You get right to the point and explain things well. I have fine, low density hair and don't do many of these things too. Gel does the same thing to my hair and takes a long time to scrunch out so I use mousse. I stopped pinappling my hair because it wouldn't stay up, my hair looked terrible and my scalp would hurt! Nice to know that I'm not the only one!
Thank you for your video!! You look more beautiful than ever 🙂 Please go over how you do your smasters technique. I want it to work for me but so far not so much. I have low density, mixed to high porosity, med coarse hair. Like you I have better hair days in the low dews of winter than summer 😕
I agree with you. They make it to complicated. I wash , condition , put product in and crunch, put alligator clips on my crown and I’m through. Next morning I shake out at roots, put finishing stuff on, or a little oil, and I’m done
Thank you for sharing. This has definitely given me food for thought! My hair can't be more different. I'm very high density, very course, 3A/3B, low porosity hair. Sounds like the total opposite, right? Still, I can't pineapple or Medusa clip for totally different reasons. My hair stays exactly in the position where it was put. That means when I remove the pineapple or clips and shake out my hair, it is still sticking at a 45 degree angle to my head. All curlies have their challenges....sigh. Refreshing is one I am still working on.
Even after letting the hair settle and clawing down the roots (I do this in my 2nd day refresh video) does it still stick out? Mine settles down. Give it 10-20 min if you can and then see (if you haven't already tried that). Even when people have opposite hair, you can sometimes grab an idea and tweak it! :)
I'm just getting started and you're tips and videos have been very helpful! I would also love to see what your Do's and styling techniques are too. I have similar hair, but shorter on top, your videos are saving me a ton of time getting this figured out! So much less "trial and error" and that keeps me from giving up. Thanks!
I'm so glad you find them helpful!! But at the same time no 2 heads of hair will react the same so there will be trial and error. Don't get frustrated when's something fails. It's just your hair telling you no. Which helps in terms of narrowing down what are the Yes's! ;)
Perfect! Your hair profile, is my hair, EXACTLY. Length too. And cowlick. This though only developed over the last 5 or so years. Great advice. Thank you. Just found this video and have subscribed and will watch the rest.
This video has been amazingly helpful! I've only just started my journey but have felt a little overwhelmed and scared to keep going. I'm going to change a few of my techniques and products and see what happens! THANK YOU ❤
Welcome aboard! LOL It can feel overwhelming. It's a marathon not a sprint so you have plenty of time to keep learning, absorbing, adjusting and experimenting! I hope some things in here help you! You're so welcome! Report back, I'd love to hear if something worked for you!
Thanks for this video! Good to know I’m not the only one! I don’t do most of the things you named! Also my hair doesn’t like air drying or creams... How do you style WITHOUT scrunching???? Please do a video of your styling method without scrunching! Thank you 🙌🏼
Always love seeing a new video from you!! Thank you so much for warning about deep conditioning overnight! I’m high porosity as well and even leaving an Olaplex treatment on for too long can throw me into hygral fatigue. A curly girl rule that I break is using a fine tooth wooden comb to smooth my crown when I’m wearing a sleek ponytail. I still tie it loosely with an invsibooble or scrunchie. I don’t comb it all the way through, just enough to smooth leading up to the pony tail.
I do not do my hair upside down. When I do the cowlick on the back of my part gets too separated and looks as though I have a bald spot, even if I clip after. That, and it hurts! My neck, my back my shoulders. So not worth it for my short, fine, hi-por hair.
@@libra11426 Same! 😂 I always did a blow out before CG. I ruffle my roots when scrunching in product and fluff with a pick while diffusing. It helps, but sometimes still dries wrong. Oh well 😂
Glad to find your channel ❤ Your hair sounds just like mine! I've figured out that many of these things do not work for my hair either. Thanks for your tips!
I love your videos because I have very similar hair. Please make more! What shampoo do you use? I think my problem is that my roots get weighed down because they’re not cleansed enough. I’m also going to try the tip of not squishing as much. Thanks!
im so glad i found this video and your channel! i have pretty much the same kind of hair, also low density / high porosity lol. Thank you so much for this helpful video and you’re very beautiful! ✨
Notification squad.! My hair is exactly like yours. I love your videos. They are so incredibly helpful to growing my knowledge about my hair. I find that if I follow other curlies routines I don't get the results that I want. Thank you for your videos 😁
Also I would love to see a video of your favorite products. It would be very helpful for me. I'm trying to find products for me but I find myself eating so many products because of my low density high priority hair.
That was the most helpful video in a long time. Thank you! I have wavy fine-medium hair and with your tips I'm sure to improve and adapt the curly girl method to my hair. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. With best regards from Switzerland. :-)
Rather an aha moment. I have very( and I do mean very) thin hair and not much of it, after having a lifetime of full thick hair, I am learning to make the best of what I have now( is that not the entire point of Lorraine Massey's approach)? I am 5-6 months in- on this CG method, even though my hair is vaguely a 2 anything( a "wannabe wavy" if you will), and you answered a question that I have had- why on earth is my hair taking hours to dry? Even after I diffuse it... because I have high porosity hair and it soaks up EVERYTHING! Including the water. I hit hygral fatigue a few months back, over compensating for what I thought was too much protein, ( who knew your hair really could feel like mush), but I never connected the dots. Slap upside the head, V8 style. I did a few of your "don'ts" today and it made a huge difference! I did use a wee bit of leave- in (my hair tends to be dry), only gently squished to condish, I didn't plop, only used the t-shirt, to gently scrunch the water, and then applied my product, after diffusing a few minutes, applied a small amount of gel. Crazy difference! Thank you! Dried so much more quickly, not pumping water into rather frail hair...still rolling my eyes at myself. I have gone to sleep a couple of times the night before a clarifying wash- with coconut oil on my dry hair( wondering what your thought are on that)- and it does benefit my hair-it helped it clump much better. I agree never to sleep with a deep conditioner with wet hair though. The Science-y hair blog on coconut oil was where I found that info. BTW rice water helps considerably on water logged hair. Thank you again! Great information!
I oil my hair at night often. Usually just a bit so I can get another day out of it. But on occasion I will do it and then wake up and wash! If your hair is taking forever to dry that is actually a sign of LOW porosity....it is harder for it to take in moisture but b/c the cuticles are tight shingles they also give the moisture up much more slowly and reluctantly once its in there. The Science-y Hair Blog is phenomenal!!
Thank you for the response! I have colored hair, so pretty certain I have high porosity for the most part. I am in the glorious process of going gray. I now likely have two different porosities, my "tiara",( God given highlights) and the high and low lights. I had been discussing my transition for years with my hair dresser, and going wavy was not even on my map, nor were the blonde highlights come to think of it, but it does distract - so between the rather artful hair color and going wavy- hardly anyone comments on the now 2-3 inches of gray. Something to consider for those taking the plunge into the transition.
This was so helpful. I tried the dry plopping and my hair did get too dry and it got frizzy. I have fine to medium wavy curly hair and I color it to cover gray.
I would love to see a styling video as my hair is very similar to yours and many of these CG common methods don’t work for me too! Do you apply stylers when your hair is wet or just damp? And if wet, since you don’t dry plop, I’d love to see your technique for removing excess moisture without overdrying your ends!
I don’t put styling product in my hair when its sopping wet. If I do that my hair just gets smashed to my scalp. I also don’t style upside down but I do scrunch out the crunch upside down. I would love to know what you do instead of the 10 things you don’t do. What do you do instead of squishing?
These are gooooood!! I gave a few in the Don't's but there are more Do's to come. I mentioned that I do squish a tiny bit but not excessively like many do. It also depends which product I am using as to what technique I may use.
I have a few I've like over the years. As I Am Leave In. Curls Blueberry Bliss and maybe my top fave Noughty Intensive Care Leave In. Check ingredients to see if there is anything you may be sensitive to like aloe or protein. Occasionally I don't rinse my condish out fully and consider that my leave in.
FitKat Style Thank you so much for responding. I just found your UA-cam channel and I’m obsessed. Please keep up the videos you give really good advice.

I think we might be hair twins...except I stopped coloring about 4 years ago. and I believe I'm low porosity. :) Thanks for sharing you don'ts. What is the difference between sulfate free shampoos and Low Poos?
I was wondering if scrunching in my products was separating my curls? I'd love to know how you do it. My hair is the same as yours but I believe I have even less hair.
A few signs are mushy or gummy feeling hair when wet and also snapping instead of stretching when wet. Also hair that is limp and no longer curling as it once did.

I don’t do any styling upside down. It just leads to a tangled mess once I’m upright.

I'm very close to your type, maybe a bit more on the medium density side than low. I would love to know more about how you apply different products!
It's in the works!!
I love your videos because I have very similar hair. Please make more! What shampoo do you use? I think my problem is that my roots get weighed down because they’re not cleansed enough. I’m also going to try the tip of not squishing as much. Thanks!
I like the green bottle of NYMN (Not Your Mother's Naturals) but also like Mill Creek Botanicals shampoos.
I’ll check those out thanks!
im so glad i found this video and your channel! i have pretty much the same kind of hair, also low density / high porosity lol.
My hair responds well to pixie 🧚♂️ diffusing with gel or mousse
Awesome specific question! I do some wet but probably more damp. I'll definitely demo that!!
I’m a guy and my hair strands are on the thinner side but I have a lot of hair, so it’s dense.
Lucky guy!
I don't cowash, my hair is really thin and wispy and if I did it would just be flat as a pancake.
Thank you for these great tips.
Thank you...great video!
Please make more videos. I love your channel!
Thank you!!! I feel the love! Hopefully soon. Life has been complicated ;)
Thank you Katin
Love your content. Where have you gone?
Thank you!! I've moved. I'll get back on here eventually!!! xo
Can you please share which leave in conditioner you use?
I have a few I've like over the years. As I Am Leave In. Curls Blueberry Bliss and maybe my top fave Noughty Intensive Care Leave In. Check ingredients to see if there is anything you may be sensitive to like aloe or protein. Occasionally I don't rinse my condish out fully and consider that my leave in.
FitKat Style Thank you so much for responding. I just found your UA-cam channel and I’m obsessed. Please keep up the videos you give really good advice.
FitKat Style Would you mind also sharing which blow dryer and diffuser you use?
@@zumbarbie7 Xtava Black Orchid Diffuser is the big one or just a collapsible silicone one from Sally Beauty with my shorter hair or for travel. The dryer is the Revlon 1875W Volumizing Hair dryer. Siver in the from and black on the back. $20 on Amazon.
I think we might be hair twins...except I stopped coloring about 4 years ago. and I believe I'm low porosity. :) Thanks for sharing you don'ts.
What is the difference between sulfate free shampoos and Low Poos?
They're the same. They use lower strength detergents than sulfates.
I was wondering if scrunching in my products was separating my curls? I'd love to know how you do it. My hair is the same as yours but I believe I have even less hair.
Try smoothing it in or prayer hands then do just a little scrunching.
@@fitkatstyle4388 thanks!
Red is your color!!!
Those cheekbones tho.
what are the signs of hydral fatigue? i have never hear of this!
A few signs are mushy or gummy feeling hair when wet and also snapping instead of stretching when wet. Also hair that is limp and no longer curling as it once did.
I just subscribed just wanted to say hello.
Hello! Welcome and thank you!
