Grammy Winner PJ Morton Breaks Down Piano Scenes From Movies | GQ - Розваги
as a former ballet dancer, having musicians who adjust to what's happening onstage is one of the best feelings. when a musician and you are coordinated in your timing, emotion, acting, etc it feels like everything is in place and you're free to put on the best performance possible. there's nothing like the feeling of a musician and a dancer being totally on the same page
Most definitely. I feel that same way about singing with a intentional musician
When the music is right and everyone is clicking, it's almost a spiritual experience.
Now imagine that but being a musician with another musician. And that feeling of chemistry felt between the two performers is heard in what they’re playing.
He's not kidding about the difficulty of "God only Knows." I've been a professional piano player for over 40 years and play 100% by ear. I'm to the skill level where I can usually take a new song and learn it perfect on the first attempt after hearing it 3 or 4 times. This song forced me to practice it for 2 straight days before I could figure out what it was doing in the chord changes. Much respect to Brian Wilson and Tony Asher.
That's right. Brian's a real musician's musician. As is PJ, if I may say so 👍
You should look up Rick Beato's UA-cam explanation of the most complex #1 pop sing ever. It is "Never gonna Let You go" recorded by Sergio Mendez, written by Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil. Literally over 100 chord changes and much of it non-standard. His description of he and his band mates butchering this song live is priceless.
@@patrickhenry4675 I did see that one. Fortunately, in my career, nobody has ever requested it LOL!
That's a really interesting distinction between reading sheet music, sight reading, and playing by ear. God Only Knows is what I would call beginner-intermediate difficulty score, something that a kid with maybe 1-2 years of intense instruction can play by sight perfectly with a couple hours of practice.
Grammy winner messes up “Heart and soul” and just chuckles 😆 honestly Im glad they left that in there, its very endearing and honest!
Yeah that felt good helps us remember nobody is perfect
On Elton John...he rarely spent more than 15 minutes putting a lyric to music. And not only recorded singing and piano together, but the whole band did this as well, going into the studio right after hearing Elton play the song on piano, coming up with their own parts, and just playing the new song. The song 'Daniel' that you hear on the album was the first 'take' of the song. The entire double-album 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' (18 songs plus other original songs that weren't included on the record) was written and recoded in 2 weeks.
Elton's then contract specified 2 full albums and three world tours a year.
Kinda understandable that he turned to alcohol and drugs.
@@LasseHG1 You're not wrong...that is a lot of pressure. He is pretty open about the drug abuse, and he maintains that he didn't start using until AFTER he got big. So during his creative period (1970-1975) he was not using. After Captain Fantastic, he fired his longtime rhythm section (Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson), in my opinion soul of the 'Elton Sound'. That was probably the beginning of the downward slide, and was probably a good sign that the drug abuse had begun.
He was also naturally shy ('Elton' and 'Reg' are more or less different people). The drugs gave him the 'confidence' to be outgoing while not on stage. Also almost killed him.
Ah, yes. The beauty and beast of drugs. The make you feel free but trapped at the same time. They can light up your life but darken it, sometimes forever. They are the God and the Devil in one little bag
He's a musical genius, no doubt.
I love when piano players get in the zone while trying to explain something and lose all ability to speak in complete sentences. They still somehow manage to convey their meaning perfectly.
The piano for Behind the Candelabra was played by Philip Fortenberry. He fully body doubled Douglas, and they just digitally altered/swapped out his head. He'd play first and then Douglas would mimic his body language and head movements to make the effects shots easier
seeing PJ Morton live was one of the greatest concerts of my life. Such an amazing performer
He’s the #LiveShowKilla ‼️ Amazing concerts.
Yay nice to see PJ and his expert review on these clips! Underrated
PJ Morton is such an amazing talent and one of my favorite musicians to listen to! Go listen to his solo albums 🤎
PJ needs to take the reigns for a Maroon 5 album. Him and the other members are way to talented to do what ever Adam is doing.
As big of a Maroon 5 I am, they really do need to utilize their members' skills more cause they are so much more talented than just the radio pop music they produce lately.
The paycheck don't lie
I’m a be honest with you. I had no clue he was in Maroon 5 before I saw your comment
The Pianist is SLEPT ON! I wonder if PJ can pay Chopin’s Ballade no. 1 👀👀👀
Great character of this guy, I hope he gets a few more episodes!
And now, off to watch Ray for the 200th time.
Word.
PJ is one of the most brilliant musicians alive today 💙
Yeah!! It's great to see PJ in the spotlight talking about this stuff! Bless him man
PJ Morton deserves atleast 5 spots in the top 100 24/7 forever & ever amen. What a talent and appears to be a class act.
check out his live albums, he’s insane!!
It’s like when Michael Jackson and slash were together. Slash was in the zone and refused to be stopped
Wow, it isn't scripted? I thought it is scripted..
@@rubarihihuki6566 it was
@@rubarihihuki6566 It was planned. Michael used to do the same thing with Tito in the Jacksons live shows in the late '70s.
Just watched the movie Crimson Peak and actress Jessica Chastain learned the end of a Chopin Ballade for one short scene of the movie in only 4 months of intensive practice! As a classical pianist with 16 years of playing and a college degree in music, I was incredibly impressed that she could learn proper technique, phrasing and musicality in such a short amount of time. A beginner pianist would take many years to develop such skills. It seems that when you have enough time and money almost anything is achievable.
I could listen to PJ talk and play all day! Nice choice GQ!!
"Ray" was so good because Jamie Foxx is so talented as a musician. And actor. And singer.
This was amazing! I will say that piano duets are more fun than they look -- having that other person and their energy and emotion adding onto yours is a great feeling to have.
This entire episode, is amazing! One of my favorite pianists/singers- PJ Morton! Salute. 💪🏿🎹
Love PJ, happy to see him on here ❤️
Feels like a lot of his insight was cut for the sake of brevity.
In that Ray clip, I wonder why they didn't just say the actual key? Such a dumb and unnecessary error. I'm sure they had a music consultant on set, and I'm sure he caught that. Would the line of dialogue really have sounded worse if he said "in the key of E flat" or whatever?
I think maybe the directors focused on the movie being historically accurate, probably to a lesser extent musically accurate (per the script). Who knows? Maybe he did play in G but they changed it in post.
@@tonylancer7367 Actually....it IS in G...but the intro starts out in D...
I don't really know if doing boogie woogie piano requires that arbitrary of musical training. You think that Jelly Roll Morton, one of my favorite pianists periodt, was privileged to that level of education at the turn of the century in the Jim Crow South?
@@leslauner5062 that's interesting, and probably true, but in context of the scene makes no sense
@@LiamDePaux It does if you're a piano player.
This deserves much more views
Loved this so much, need more!!
This was great! I’d love to see more musicians on here as well
the minor major thing breakdown in the end was gold
This was super interesting! I love these videos
I see PJ, I click!! 💜💜
Dassit!
my favorite piece ballade no.1 by chopin in The Pianist clip
It's an AWESOME piece. I also love his 4th Ballade.
Would love to see him talk about Chico and Harpo Marx doing a piano routine.
Nah les Dawson mate
Victor Borge- but I don’t think we was in any actual movies…
Chico & Harpo was 💣🔥🔥🔥🔥
According to IMDb... "Special effects were used to digitally graft the actor's head onto the body of Philip Fortenberry, a Juilliard-trained Liberace virtuoso who was the in-house entertainer at the (now closed) Liberace Museum in Las Vegas for years."
Never thought I’d hear someone describe a Chopin ballade as “stride on another level” 😂
Love you!!❤️
he needs to break down that Freddie Mercury upside down scene on Bohemian Rhapsody
Thank you, this is great.
This was fascinating! I'd love to see you analyze La La Land and the Legend of 1900 in another video. There are so many different movies that feature pianists and piano playing, you could definitely do another video packed with more movies.
And Bohemian Rhapsody too!
YEAAAH PJ
Ah, I miss Gary Oldman's Immortal Beloved. But such a delight listening to PJ Morton!
This was great!
yessss PJ
the keys are out! we love to see it! ❤️🎹
this guy is much too talented for maroon 5
Have you seen maroon 5 Jamming live? They are the most talented band and have been for the past 20 years
@@space_4736 have you seen their super bowl half time show? They can barely play!
@@iTzAtaXi are you kidding me????😂😂😂😂😂😂 they were absolutely killing it, and Adams vocals was also on point. The only reason why the performance got hated, is because of the Colin Kaepernick controversy, and The NFL not playing sweet victory.
@@space_4736 if you say the most talented then u obviously have not seen that many people play.
@@cameronblanchette6687 I’m referring to Mainstream bands, I’m sure there’s better ones. But in mainstream music, none come close to Maroon 5.
I would love to see more of this. Bohemian Rhapsody especially, they recreated some of the most iconic piano scenes and I believe Rami Malek played most of them
its elton john man. hes just everything for me
This is one of my favorite series on UA-cam and I'm a piano player ❤️
I'm a pianist and I was JUST wishing for this!
Do a audio engineer breakdown
seconded
Such a 🐐
Thank you 🙏 GQ
Learned some things thanks!
Go stream The Piano Album if you want to hear more of PJ’s amazing piano skills!! 🎹
Dope!
Gotta get a guitarist next
Super smart. Great attitude. Cool video. Thank you.
For the Liberace movie digital effects were used to graft Michael Douglas's face onto the body of Philip Fortenberry.
St Aug ~ Go Purple Knights!
how did PJ not call out the DeBarge sample in Soul Food? i was highkey waiting for it
I hit like before the video started.
Missed out on including “Your Lie in April”
I did NOT expect “Soul Food” to pop up
SO to pj one time
🐐🐐🐐
omg I want to hear PJ do God Only Knows now!!!
supreme
cool video, please do a video breaking down guitar solos in movies
I would have loved to see the reaction to the Green Book diner scene im surprised it wasn't included
Would have loved to see Shine in this.
Good video
I clicked on this video hoping he’d analyze Soul, and to my luck, it’s the 1st video he reviewed lol.
I’m surprised it wasn’t pointed out that the piece he’s playing in Soul Food is “I Ain’t Mad Atcha” by Pac
me too
Pac sampled Debarge's "A Dream" for "I Ain't Mad Atcha"
Nice:-)
I know he didn't just diss 4 hand piano pieces (ie playing a duet on the same piano)
*surprised Pikachu face*
Why does everytime PJ play any song, it becomes a gospel one? Really nice tho and love it so much
There's a great anime called Sakamichi no Apollon. I wish he could review its finale scene too.
One of the best things I've seen.
14:50 that’s that a boogie song
A piano duet has only one advantage, if you hit it right you can interpret a much more complex and rich song than with one person alone, because you have 4 hands and 20 fingers to play the song. but it will definitely be much more difficult to get it right than a person playing alone.
Yo PJ Morton, take me as a student 👩🎓😂
Sure, but where can I buy his glasses?
The keyboard is a Nord
Mighty Quinn and Unleashed aka Danny The Dog??
I was hoping for Cloud Atlas
what piano ist that?
You should definitely check out Chico & Harpo Marx on the keys…
Jamie Foxx and John Baptiste were in soul
Should have broke down Alfred Molinas piano scene in Love is Strange.
He should have used the piano to show us examples of his explanations
what's about lalaland and bohemian rhapsody?(
Why no Legend of 1900?
HELLO BROOOO
Real shame "Shine" isn't on the list :/
In the Ray clip he does play in the key of G… the first note he plays is a D but he’s in G Major. Also, it might be easier to describe the treble as having the higher pitch (played with the right hand on a piano) and therefore is usually used to played the melody and the base (or left hand) is used to play chord progression and the harmony. One major reason for this configuration is because sounds waves at higher frequencies (treble) will dissipate much faster than lower frequencies (usually anything below g3/base). Melodic notes change quickly in a music piece so composers prefer to have the right hand, or treble hand, play these notes so you can distinguish the changes in pitch more clearly.
it was E flat lmao you trippin
"Frasier" & "Scott Pilgrim vs The World"
michael douglas had a hand double
Should of done Ryan gosling in la la land.
He should've did blues brothers
5:21 Bang si hyuk
Where is Legend of 1900?
