For several days after the Christmas holiday, Metrolink shut down their West Bank line for all trains in and out of Los Angeles's busy Union Station to do much needed signal upgrades and other MOW rail improvements. Amtrak still ran many of their trains, all the 700 series Surfliners, Coast Starlight, and Sunset Limited ran via the East Bank line on the River Sub which is definitely out of the norm. This detour bypassed Union Station all together... buses were acquired to transport passengers originally boarding in LA to other stations such as Glendale, Van Nuys, Ontario, and Fullerton to catch their train.
The trains would run with a "pilot" crew for the uncharted territory the regular crew was not qualified to run over. I caught some of the crew swaps in the video.
After catching the rare Amtrak detour moves I decided to spend the rest of the day in LA getting some more train footage. Information listed in the timeline below...

I swear something about those k5las on the cab cars sounds even better than a normal k5la
It’s either the way it’s mounted or just the horn but the surfliner cab cars are incredibly unique
6908 in particular has one of Amtrak’s best K5LAs system wide
All of them going through Redondo Junction crossing
It’s really rare to see it this way and I like it a lot!
Super great Video, thanks for sharing 👍
Thumbs U and Best Greetings...Thomas😊
LA City anthem: Police sirens and Helicopters 😅
Awesome video!
Thanks for posting this video. Rare trains.
Reminds me of when I was on a cruise ship and they announced a "local pilot" would come aboard to assist the regular crew not familiar with the port.
This is essentially the railway version of that!
Very nice video ❤ big fan
Fantastic video location, and just what I needed as I am planing to make an HO scale layout of the Greater LA / SoCal area. * subscribed *
Nice Train Catches
Nice! Greeting from Russia 🙃
Now THIS is interesting stuff! I always found reroutes to be unique especially with Amtrak they look odd running on particular routes you’re not used to seeing them on and those cab car K5’s slap! I love that Surfliner takes very good care of their horns and keep them sounding at there best!
Good footage--I am surprised that the bridge past LATC at CP Yuma doesn't directly connect to the "east bank" line, as it is SCRRA trackage.
It does
Very Cool! Nice work my friend, I enjoyed this. Also I just SUB 👍
Hey I saw that Z NYCLAC in Cajon pass and have some photos of it too
Nice Video and Happy New Year also!
Thanks.
I thought, maybe because the Surfliners were bypassing LAUPT, that they weren't getting wyed like usual, and we'd get to see some of them in push mode away from Los Angeles, like they did in the old San Diegan and early Surfliner days.
But I guess the operation near Washington Blvd has them reverse direction, which effectively wyes them.
I miss F59PHI😢😢
Me too bro
Nice video
Did they store coast starlight trains around the yards there then? Since their temporary terminus was Van Nuys for the 4 days
The Coast Starlight was stored at 8th Street yard as normal, nothing too out of the ordinary in terms of storage
2:59 What street is this?
