I watched a man chronograph .223 from a 16 inch barrel and a 18 inch barrel, the results were quite surprising, I'm used to seeing about 20 to 30 fps increases per inch of barrel length (.243,.308,45-70,ect) but in this case there was a 194fps velocity increase in the extra 2 inches of barrel. That's 97fps per inch, and the results were confirmed with a second five shot string from both guns (AR-15s)
yea, it tends not to be linear, and is very dependent on the twist rate and speed of the powder and also the losses are greatest in the shorter end, and the longer the barrel gets, the less significant it becomes. If it is too short with slower burning powder, you will waste a lot of the energy blowing hot air!
Great stuff. That 55gn was interesting, I didn't think it would go through, but your results showed the opposite to my expectations. Thanks for posting, very interesting results. 👏👏👏 👋👋👋
Thank you for taking the time to write. As usual, on behalf of the entire viewership, no video is complete until you weigh in on things. Am in the middle of editing even better footage. The best is still yet to come. I will follow your advice and talk less, and edit more. :)
🤣🤣🤣 I'll have to get a 223, I shoot my son's ruger (9" twist) quite a bit, well I did until covid closed our range. I got him into reloading to ease my reloading workload & expense, but looks like I'll have to swallow my pride and grab one. Back in the 70s we used the 222 a lot of the time for pests but when the powers that be took my 7.62 off me and handed me a 5.56NATO I did my nut and signed my discharge papers, being a bit of a smart*ss in those days noted my reasons as, "I'm not relying on a rabbit shooter to save my life"..... I was part of a group that test fired the first M16s produced in Australia and wasn't impressed. The rifle was fine, performed pretty good, but the ammo gave me the horrors, 🤣. Nowadays we shoot the 55gn V-Max pretty much exclusively through it and they perform consistently, but I'll most likely get a heavy barrel rather than a carrier because of my limited mobility no more "hoofing the hills" unfortunately. Cheers from downunder.
I would have responded sooner but I was literally filming yesterday and am taking a short break from editing to reply. I can honestly tell you that the best is STILL yet to come. Also, I would like to see you start your own channel. You definitely have more than enough knowledge and I would do everything possible to help promote your vids. So would many of the viewers here.
I haven't got the gear to do what you guys do. Haven't got the cameras, tripods etc. I've posted a few quick vids, but they are pretty much my level of incompetence, 😂😂. I'll leave the posting of vids to those who actually know what they're doing 😂😂. What I'll try and do is post something of the journey through my surgery healing, that'd freak a few people out, but as for a shooting vid, well, our range won't be opening again until next month and having my face all over screen would be akin to a freak show, 🤣🤣🤣.
Thanks for all your hard work, much appreciated. I was expecting the opposite to what happened in the clay tests but the 55 gr impressed me with its penetration.
The 55 gr and 62 gr bullet are velocity based bullets they need speed to fragment unless you are shooting a short barrel at 100 yards they are not gonna over penetrate
Just got done with a full day of filming yesterday. Am taking a short break from editing to respond to your last message. Also, I would be very happy if you were to borrow as many ideas as possible from my vids and incorporate them into your own channel. We would all benefit from the twist that you may put on things.
@@outdooradventures1696 Thanks, as the weather is about to warm up here in NE OH hopefully I can put some more interesting videos together with some longer range shooting. Thanks and take care.
it stands to reason that the 556 ammo you showed has a velocity based on a shorter ar platform vs the 223 vmax loads which are more likely to be used in a longer bolt gun.
Would like to see you do the same test with the 52 Hornady match bullet . Been using this bullet for coyotes and it seems to be pelt friendly !….. Btw I just pushed you to 6000 .
I've been reloading for a short time, and unless they advertise out of a 16 inch barrel, I always assume it's from a 24 inch barrel. I also know most powders are different. 2900 is still a good FPS.
Thank you for your kind words...and your frequent encouragement on other vids does not go unnoticed and is definitely appreciated. Am in the middle of editing more 55 grn v-max footage....
@@outdooradventures1696 thats awesome I have not been able to find 55 gr vmax tested out of an ar15 like that, very refreshing. I hunt coyotes and beavers using a smith & wesson 16 “ 1:9 twist M&P sport 2 ar15 and the 55 gr vmax is just amazing out of it.
@@outdooradventures1696 they seem to be optimized out of longer barrels in bolt action rifles but still have plenty of great performance out of the shorter carbine length barrels on ar15s. My opinion
Would have responded sooner but I was literally filming more yesterday and am editing footage at this very moment that will speak to your views....Great timing on your part....
the 55 grain bullet was not designed to tumble,....that is just what bullets do when they hit a target. if you look at military 500 yard targets you will find an oblong hole for rifle rounds ...because of the ARC of trajectory ...and when the 55 grain bullet was introduced in the Vietnam era ,. it was not considered an effective round..as troops report today. eve General Mattis says this round is not up to the job
The only reason 5.56 is being phased out is body armor, it is extremely effective on unarmored people out to 700 meters with 77grain TMK. Of course distance will vary greatly with ammo type and barrel length. However anyone that says 5.56 is not or never was a effective round, don't know what they are talking about. Even back in the Vietnam era it was found in military testing 5.56 did more damage to flesh than .308 because of the fragmentation and velocity.
The thought of "not passing through delivering all of its energy in the target" is difficult to apply accurately outside of highly frangible bullets. There is an entirely different wounding theory based on hunting observations that favor passthrough for lethality, but require non-traditional bullet construction (i.e. monolithics). The evidence of this is seen in the Mk318mod0, M855A1, Hammer Hunter bullets, and the Lehigh made xtreme bullets (cavitator and hunter). These bullets (the rifle ones, at least) give complete pass throughs, but much more devastating wound channels and terminal effects than lead core bullets with similar kinetic energy.
Thank you Calangel for taking the time to provide yet another very insightful and worthwhile comment. Always appreciated and never taken for granted....
Freedom Munitions makes a 60gr .223 V-Max as well as a 60gr 5.56 V-Max. The .223 runs $32/box of 50. 5.56 is slightly higher.
They are overpriced
556 55 gr vmax from aac/PSA .50 a round right now.

Clearly that 60 grain V Max dumped all its energy into that clay like a bomb going off inside! WOW!!! Heck of a varmit load
Hey my man, great video! Thanks for putting stuff like this out. Helped me make buy I was considering👍👍
Very interesting. Grain weight differences in 223 can be substantial differences in terminal results.

@ 9:19 - the shadows of the clay going into near-earth-orbit and then returning to back to earth were pretty cool. Elon would be jealous.

I won 100 hornady v max tips 60 gr, I would like to know if you recommend these tips for wild boar hunting?
The 55gr V-Max performs very well from my 7.5-inch AR pistol.
Any thoughts on the 53 grain vmax? Better bc than either of these!

Hello, I caught a 60gr v-max it looked identical to the 55gr. V-max you recovered.
I love both
What does the red tip on these mean?
It's a ballistic tip
It's a plastic tip that improves aerodynamics. The bullet is just a hollow point with a pointy red plug.

Was it warmer or something? I don't recall 223 ever exploding the 10lb clays like that. Or just a bad memory?
What you were seeing was how a v-max bullet performs as opposed to the ball ammo in the previous video...same basic outdoor temp...

With a pass through you get a blood trail I'd take that anytime medium game
