I kept wondering why everybody kept talking about Bird and Indiana when it was clear that Magic and Michigan State was a better team. The game went pretty much the way I thought it would go. Magic is the reason I became a Lakers fan. Magic's Lakers and Bird's Celtics was the best rivalry in sports for a long time. Great memories!

Maybe, but Bird was getting mugged by Jay Vincent and anyone of a number of helpers every time the ball and him got close to the rim. The MSU's practice squad had Magic filling in for Bird. The Spartans knew what they were up against, they didn't need to see the highlight films of Bird. Bird and Magic were on an AAU team together. There is an interview where they are laughing about the fact that was the only team they were ever on where they weren't starters and road the bench.

MSU fan 1 you got to give Bird credit for taking ISU to the finals but here is something you probably don't know. Bird was originally a Hoosier at Indiana. One day Larry Bird's girlfriend said hello to Bobby Knight and Bobby Knight did not even look at her direction. That disrespect was enough for Bird to transfer to ISU. Knight later on admitted that was the biggest regret of his coaching career. It wasn't pulling out his team vs Russia or punching the cop in Puerto Rico it was that. Anyways Magic Johnson, Greg Kessler and the Spartans, were just too much for the Cyclones. Jud Heathcoat in practice told Magic to emulate Larry Bird. He was like 17 -19 shooting and Jud Heathcoat says, 'Can anybody stop him?" What people forget is Magic was also a good career shooter, he shot over 50% for his career, in the NBA so he was not just a good passer. We will NEVER see College basketball played at this level again because players don't stay for 4 years anymore. Actually Magic could have gone pro after his Freshman year but he wanted to come back and avenge the sweet 16 loss to Kentucky, the previous year. That MSU team should have won 2 National Championships.

@@mongoslade277 Right Magic discussed that gmae. He said that "We should have won two National Championships but we played Kentucky's slow paced game." They also lost to Adloph Rupp, no shame in that. The next year, they took the lessons from 78 and said, "If we are going down, we are going down playing OUR style of basketball."
Now in 79 The season did not start out well. MSU was 5-5 and they were downplaying At Ohio St. Now remember back then maybe 1 or 2 went from each conference, went to the dance. They came back to beat Ohio St and then never looked back. Notre Dame was supposed to play MSU in the regular season but it was supposed to be in East Lansing. Digger Phelps got scared and cancelled the game. MSU felt disrespected getting the #2 seed. When they played #1 ND, Jud Heatcoat said, 'On the first play to set the tone, you slam dunk it." At that time they would have been the last team to go undefeated and have the NCAA Championship. The last team that went undefeated and won the NCAA was Indiana in '76. Btw, Bird originally went to Indiana but left because of Bobby Knight's B.S. Not that Bird wasn't tough enough, but he didn't like the way Knight treated players.
And I watched that game. It was Bird's lowest point production for the tourney. Give Magic his credit. But he had Greg Kelsor and Terry Donnelly as teammates and they both played the best games of their lives that night. That loss by Indiana State crushed me, I'm a Hoosier by birth. Bird and the Celtics were my team all during the 80's. Loved it when they beat L.A. The only player I liked/respected on the Lakers was James Worthy, and that's because he was from UNC.

MSU's secret weapon in the tournament was Gregory Kelsor. Playing in the tall shadow of Magic Johnson people tended to overlook his contributions.
