After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”
Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

How sbout more about the movie, and less how's it's made.
she dies in the movie . her plane gets blown into pieces
@@davidtaylor8002 We don't want to know about the storyline - we go and watch the movie for that.
NO CGI really you are no serious ? so the the one flying thru the two in close formation is real and the economy is at its best
tom cruise, bruckheimer and the cast did a MOST phenomenal job
One thing that I love about Phoenix is that she's not set up as a love interest, or a damsel, or a femme fatale, or any traditionally feminine role that would cause her character to entirely revolve around a male one. There's nothing inherently wrong with those roles, but it's refreshing to see a character like Phoenix who's portrayed as (and viewed as, in-story) an equal part of the group, without any qualifiers.
Her gender isn't essential to the role she plays in the story. They could have just as easily cast a man in the role with no script changes aside from pronouns. But that would, nonetheless, detract from Phoenix's character.
The series is better for Monica Barbaro's performance, and I look forward to seeing her in future roles.
Too bad people were hating on her when trailers came out.
Shes not the leader but shes not a submissive second. Shes basically just like everyone else - a top gun pilot.
It's almost like gender wasnt important in this movie, like it isnt in real life !!
She is a Naval Aviator, in that place and time, and that is the limit, there is no time for anything else.
@@jabberwolf7348 that is right, we are in 2022 man, that is how it must be, female pilots came first in the navy in the 80s, first ladies, it was tough on them, but we evolve, at least in pilots i believe, 30 years later... Check out Moochs channel, ex F14 rio, real one.
There's actually some evidence from USAF research that females make better pilots because their bodies are able to better withstand high-G maneuvers and apparently women are better at resisting going into G-Lock (presumably because of their smaller size)
I loved that there was never any need to TELL us that Phoenix was a Strong Female Character. Her being a Top Gun graduate was all the proof we needed that she’s a capable pilot and has both proven herself and earned her place.
After that, she got to just be an awesome character instead of a platform to preach to the audience.
We need more ladies like Phoenix.
In my opinion, if Netflix made this Top Gun sequel movie, Phoenix would be bringing a surprise date to the officer’s ball: Charlie. There would be some transgender pilots to please a small group.
When the wrong studios acquire rights to make a movie, they can make a big mess. Glad Top Gun stayed with Paramount.
Um, you do realize she's an actress not a pilot nor a Top Gun graduate?
@@bobcranston3414 I was talking about the character, not the actress.
Loved this movie
@@bobcranston3414 we're talking about the character you halfwit
As a Navy Jet Engine Mechanic I TOTALLY respect the work you all did to make this legit flying....not some CG silliness. The work you did as actors to accomplish that is wonderful.
Oh Yes.
That stuff needs to be seen on the big screen period! It is amazing! Cruise and crew gives you your monies worth!😎
But you do realize that this is really fantasy.
I loved the flying too! Go NAVY and thnx cinematic history... Aloha
F-14 and Su 57s were.
Still, fucking awesome
Phoenix was feminism done right in my eyes. Not shoved down your face like other movies or media. She was just as amazing as everyone else and is honestly one of my favorite characters from the film.
Phoenix was the embodiment of what feminism truly was meant to be from the beginning. These days modern day feminism has gone to a really dark place filled with nothing but hate and revenge against men.
I completely agree. She is my favorite character in the film. A true leader.
I have to agree. The woke mess as of late was drowning and that's why buzz light year flopped in comparison to Top Gun Maverick. People are honestly tired of that mess and wanted something as real as it gets. This movie was balanced and a love letter to aviation and a testament to the men and women who fly, fight and sometimes die in active duty.
Amen!

Girls can really become Pheonix, not like Wonderwoman, Rey (Starwars), Mighty Thor Jane, Captain Marvel, etc. Who all have superpowers.
Hollywood take notice!! This is what a strong female character talks like, behaves like and looks like.
Not a man-hater, no agenda, she worked hard to get here and because of that; she is respected and admired by men who consider her an equal; yet better than those who CAN'T cut it.
My favorite line of Phoenix is to Rooster telling him to get it together or you'll leave us with Hangman. Rooster just nodded. Also: " Nice."
I love that Phoenix isn’t a helpless damsel in distress kind of character but she isn’t a shallow emotionless character either. Phoenix is a great example of what feminism could be and what it should be. She’s someone I as a women want to have as a role model.
Likewise with the men they aren’t shallow emotionless people meant to save the women but they aren’t helpless and useless to boost the female characters.
Great character balance.
@@juanborges8192 not exactly the fighter pilot part, just how her character is in general.
Just like Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor
Similar to how Elizabeth Swan was portrayed in the POTC series, especially in AWE
I agree. A person isn’t strong because of their skin color, sex, or ethnicity. They’re strong by the morals they live by, how they demand and give respect, and how they carry themselves.
My parameters of a strong female character.
1. Confident, sex doesn't matter and just being confident in who you are is good writing for strong character. Having moments of weakness are great but if you break that confidence you have to find a good way of giving it back or it comes off lackluster. Being cocky doesn't count and neither does being witchy.
2. Character. They have to have character... and something that drives me bonkers is one of the greatest female movies out there which is nothing but tropes, WORKS because the characters are that good! (First Wives Club)
3. Female. This one might seem silly but its true, lol. A strong female character has to BE female and not some wanna be boy which seems to be the default most people write them as. Women who like martial arts and monster trucks can enjoy dressing up and putting on make-up! They can like enjoying an hour long scented bubble bath!
All the rest is icing on the cake for me...
Wait are my standards too low?
Guys Phoenix’s interactions with Bob are so funny and cute to watch at the same time! She’s such a natural leader! The two make a great pair out in the air!!
I ship those two haha
@@leechrec hell no! They're bros for life, Phoenix will rise from the ashes to protect Bob!

The way that the Phoenix character was portrayed.. nothing but respect. And would consider it an honor to have someone like her, covering my back if things get insane in a hurry. She earned her place on that team, because she was that good.
Tom Cruise has a way he wants his movies to be, I remember him once saying "CGI is shit and I want the background to be real so in 20 or 30 years the movie will still look great."
To me that's a genius visionary movie maker.

I think that she was the best pilot. Hangman should be the best (based on skill only, he's the best), but overall he can't work as a team, is very arrogant and loves to show off. To me Phoenix wins over Hangman
@@pedrooliveiraoliveirasimoe5478 You're forgetting the obvious best pilot in the movie, which is Maverick, which is what he was alluding to.

Phoenix was an utterly delightful and totally believable strong female character. She was interesting, engaging, a team player, and gave as good as she got, and she cared. She is a Top Gun. Not some overpowered or over principled woke message being shoved on us by trying to emasculate or upstage every male in the movie to prove that she can because of some chip on her shoulder. Pay attention, Hollywood. THIS is a strong female.
Just saw this last night with my 17 year old daughter. She has seen the original at least a dozen times. I told her that the original film was probably responsible for at least a generation of naval fighter pilots.
After watching Maverick, I can guarantee a whole new influx of eager TOP GUN applicants.
When I was in the Navy I flew in a 4-engine prop plane with several women pilots. I jokingly called one a "Tom Cruise wannabe" because of the way she pushed the aircraft (and us crew in the back) to its limits. Your daughter might end up being a pilot of any one of a dozen aircraft. It doesn't have to be an HPA.
@@استاذدانيال I say it all the time: I don't care who you are and what gender you are, as long as you do your job well, we're good, we're aces.
Her role was "feminism done right" if you ask me. She wasn't toxic, she wasn't particularly "manly", or talking down to her male friends like they were rude idiots treating her as a doll or something. I wish we saw more female roles like this.
During behind the scenes interviews, the actress for Phoenix, Monica Barbaro was the only one who did not throw up in the cockpit during the real flight hours aside from Tom Cruise and Jay Ellis. Extremely humble, and a consummate professional. Every bit what we would expect from a female Top Gunner who more than proves she's as good or better in a field dominated by men.
I heard Miles Teller also didnt

I really like Phoenix, she owned her place and was a cool addition to the cast!
She and Bob were also a great duo.
Great movie, and great work with this character. She was entirely believable, not a heavy handed pander like we see in every other movie.

“Every other movie” is a bit of an exaggeration dont you think
@@whitelightning2100 I don’t know, I have had to suspend my common senses and assumptions about female strength and agility for dozens of franchises. Look at Amazons new LOTR series. I am a huge fan of tolkien, I know the literature. Galadriel isn’t a warrior in the novels, just like real life history…. Men fought and died on battlefields protecting women and children. Hero arcs are rife with danger. Those stories exist to encourage young men to be bold, take risks, and fight for good causes or loved ones. We have given that arc to women now, as some show of “it’s the girls turn”.
Men and women are different. Phoenix inclusion was great because it showed women can be excellent fighter pilots and she wasn’t typecasted into a love story. Now if a bar fight broke out and she beat up a bunch of men with her barehands my brain would have said “lol OK”. All good fiction/fantasy is grounded in realistic assumptions. Phoenix was believeable. Galadriel, Rey, Captain Marvel, etc etc etc etc… not so much.
I like how Phoenix accepts Maverick's authority and eager to learn, what he has to offer. She develops a sympathy towards him as a person and as a professional as soon as she meets him, while some guys are a bit untrusting.
Phoenix was one of my favorite characters in addition to Bob. They had such a good cast for this film.
I love phoenix! Best character of all. Definitely one of the 3 best pilots on Top Gun Maverick, i love how serious, professional and talented she is. I loved a lot how she managed the bird strike, and how focus she is, definitely i would love to have her as a wingman.

@@johnduncomb7837 I've seen it reported that the jet fighters they used were rented at 11,000 USD per hour. Unsure if that includes the pilots, fuel, etc.
I concur: there are far worse and more frivolous things tax money is spent on. TGM can in part be justified from a financial and defense perspective as boosting national morale, as a recruitment tool for the military in regards to generating interest in the public to serve their citizens and the nation, and while some Hollywood artistic creativity is taken in the making of this film (it is meant to be entertainment after all), it can also be said to send a message to adversaries and competitors of the US - yes, all of the stunts shown can and are routinely performed by US military pilots - Navy, Air Force, and Marines - with or without Top Gun school training.
I watched top gun for the first time today and fell in love with Charlie… Saw Maverick in the theaters a few hours later. Now I’m in love with Phoenix 💙🌹
I respect everyone in this movie. They went above and beyond, to say the very least.
Super impressive.
One of the best films I've ever watched. Very well done, great story too. the first 15 minutes are incredible
I love it - a supremely competent and talented pilot that makes the cut as the best and goes on the mission......and not once did I feel it was rammed down my throat that she is female! After 18 years in the Air Force this is exactly how it is for real - you either have it or you don't, the enemy doesn't know or care if you are female or not!
Saw the early release. Not enough phoenix in the movie. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Wish it was 20 minutes longer with more of the supporting cast.
Top Gun Rooster next
Maybe a sequel is in the works that stars the next generation? I'd watch it.
@@matthewrutters6842 they prob are gonna do that. Now way they wouldnt with all the money they’re making.
i loved the way phoenix was written and portrayed. i've always loved the badass women in movies-i had a huge girl crush on princess leia growing up, a prime example-but phoenix is especially awesome in my eyes. she's not a love interest, she's not a damsel in distress, she's just a badass and a perfect woman to look up to on the big screen. i grew up loving top gun and i was a little disappointed as a kid that there were no women in the first film (other than charlie, of course) so to see phoenix be a strong and independent woman who is successful and talented in her job in the cockpit is fulfilling and fantastic !
That mountain pass with the snow kicking up. Wow.
As a USN veteran, with 27.5 years of service and 2 combat tours, I personally believe that Phoenix’s portrayal is perfect. She’s exactly like every woman in a leadership role that I ever served with and I think she’s an excellent role model. My advice to strong women who aspire to do great things is don’t watch TikTok, live a life of service and follow Phoenix’s example.
I've always said just show up and do the best job you can do, regardless of the genitalia you bring. I am an ER doc in a trauma center transitioning to a bit quieter role soon. Hope to keep making a difference. Hard. Anyhow, I've never felt so much support for that sentiment as I have in this thread. Thank you all.
yup - exactly; during my 32+ years working for various Navy laboratories, I remember working with a number of Officers (Navy and Air Force, both active duty and retired) who just happened to be women. All of them were competent professionals...and just got the job done. The character of Phoenix is much like the real women I remember working with - another good member of the team, and oh, by the way, happens to be female.

There’s so many things to praise this film about. One is how they handled diversity. We were able to have a female pilot without it being shoved in our face that she’s a “strong independent woman” and it’s brilliant.
More films need to be like Top Gun Maverick, and hopefully this film will serve as a lesson to other filmmakers about how to make films the right way.

I just got back from watching it and…the jet scenes were awesome!! Phoenix and Bob were definitely the best!! 👍
Monica Barbaro is carrying the legacy of Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton in term of top tier female actors playing straight to the point, no holds barred women that push themselves to the very limit.

Amazing movie. I’ve seen it three times already. Mind blowing action and to think it was all real flying. Kudos to Tom, crew, and the cast!
That’s how you write a female character with strong leadership qualities. She was confident but not arrogant. Competitive, but also compassionate. Take notes Hollywood. Not every badass female character needs to be a Mary Sue.

@@hedgehog1684 you're not too bright are you?
I think her most likable trait is how she's genuinely a great teammate. She's the one picking her teammates up when they're down, standing up for Bob against Hangman, telling Rooster to get his shit together and doing what she can to get the team operating as a unit. Phoenix cares about her mission, and she cares about the people doing it with her. That's a very trustworthy leader.
Monica is absolutely AMAZING as Phoenix. She did such an awesome job playing her character.
Loved her character and Monica Barbaro’s performance. 👍🏻
At least Tom Cruise was brave enough to tell the powers that be that he wasn’t going to a sequel if the film wasn’t worth of one. There’s so many unneeded remakes these days cuz there’s no more originality or good ideas.
It was so awesome to see a strong female character in this movie who DOESN'T hate men or try to push her agenda, but was represented as an equal and respected the men and likewise they with her.
Well done Tom Cruise 👍👍👍
I like how Phoenix is tough, but not condescending. She know she's good, but she also knows the rest of the team is good.
Just watched the movie ,was worth the wait all these years
phoenix was a badass and im so glad they had her in the movie.
i'd definitely want to be her wingman
also the casting director did a phenomenal job with everyone she casted. usually sequels of classic movies try too hard or suck but they all nailed it out of the park and i can say with ease this is one of my favorite movies now.
Phoenix was professional, a birdstrike with accompanying an engine fire could've happened to any pilot. Fortunately such mishaps are rare because most engines can withstand one bird flying through them.
What helped Phoenix's character was the fact that Maverick treated her as another pilot, being a woman had nothing to do with his decisions. He needed a team he could trust on the mission.
I joined the US Navy in 1993 because of the first Top Gun. Now I am a FullStack Cloud Engineer that can also program mobile devices. Thanks Tom for producing a Badass. Tom Cruise is amazing and as a sailor I want to lift him up for loving the Navy so much. I love Tom for loving me. I am a sailor. Best film of the summer, a thrill everytime I see it in IMAX in those rumble seats with speakers in them.
She is like the guys I worked with during my time as a deputy. No gender just team. Most of the women I worked with had BALLS like the rest of us… Maybe bigger than some cases! They fought, taught and brought their A-game every day! 🛡 ⭐️ 🚔
This movie still feels like it was made in 1986.. Gave me goosebumps when I watched it..🤙🏼
In the film, she is a pilot of the VFA-41 Black Aces Squadron, the best in the navy ♠
As a woman I was greatful to see a reasonable representation of a woman. No all the pilots can't be women that is silly... but there probably would be at least one. And so glad she wasn't the love interest for Marverick.
"Phoenix, he called you a man, are you going to sit back and take that? As long as he doesn't call you a man"...🤣🤣🤣🤣
SUCH A FAVE!
This is how you integrate good female roles.
She's not standing out as the "strong female character" but rather as capable teammember that happens to be a woman.
No political message, no woke-ism, and no forced feminism, it makes the movie a whole lot better to watch i.m.o.
Loved the Phoenix character! She was awesome and really liked the paring of Phoenix and Bob.
I can't tell you how many times I saw the original Top Gun when it came out. Gave me goosebumps because my cousin was married to a Navy fighter pilot at the time of the movie. However, I never believed the "romance" between Maverick and Charlie. There was no on-screen chemistry. BUT, 36 years later, Pete and Penny sizzled! I think the sequel tops the original!
I had a bit of a thing for Kelly McGillis back in the day but yeah - never bought Charlie and Maverick. She seemed older than him and a lot more serious... Maverick seemed like your typical jock and a bit of a nob in truth. It's is good to see how Pete Mitchell has matured over the years.
Agreed - well into double digits with this one too!
Phoenix is a true testament of feminism. She is a character that is the same and just as strong as everyone. That role could’ve easily been played by any gender but it’s good to see females get the same treatment as the men
Phoenix gonna be a finest instructors of Top Gun in future
In 1986 my girlfriend and i watched it 4 times and take my breath away became our theme song
Now shes my wife and we have watching it over and over again
I freaking love this movie
Most unrealistic thing about the Top Gun movies is the cool names the Navy gives the pilots. Everyone gets insulting names. She'd only be called "Phoenix" if she accidentally lit herself or someone else on fire.
Yeah the callsigns bug me too. If she were a real pilot in the Navy her callsign would be something like "Tampax" or "Bleeder". Kara Hultgreen was the first carrier-qualified female F-14 pilot and her callsign was "Revlon" like the makeup brand.
Also they'd never be addressed by calllsign over the radio in combat. All of the aircraft flying a mission would be assigned a mission callsign.

Phoenix and Layla from moon knight are the best written female characters from recent times. Both the actresses put in an incredible amount of work and it shows
now this is how you make a strong female character. shes never obnoxious or cringy while stepping up for herself and her comrades, men are never belittled to exalt her, her skills exalts her, shes good without the need to make her male mates complete idiots, like lesser shows do, example, ring of power, not here, in fact her mates makes her better and she makes them better as well, they cover for each other weaknesses and empower their strengths just like team mates do
Phoenix is a great character because the writers didn’t feel the need to belittle and demean all the male characters. There’s a nasty trend in Hollywood to lift one character up by dragging everyone else down. Top Gun 2 treated everyone with respect.
For me the allure was mesmerizing! Top gun fighter school? Served in the Marines as combat aircrew, all the training was spot on! But why be a movie star when u can just be the real thing? Nobody can take my experiences away from me and nobody can question what I did! Thanks Tom! I feel the need, the need for speed! Lol! I can see all the recruiters getting ready for the release! Lmao! Suckers born everyday!
I think the reason is because when you train to portray like the movie stars do, they get to go home and not have to live the military life. Unlike being the real thing, you live that day in and day out.
I was an AE with vf-124 stationed at nas miramar in 1985 during the filming of top gun. The training was tough and if we failed out we were used as paint chippers and the sort for the remainder of our time in the navy. What the movie fails to show is all those hundreds of thousands of people who failed out of their training and become what’s termed as “fuel for the fleet”. No sir, only about 1 in 1000 who even qualified to try to be a fighter pilot actually becomes a fighter pilot. Then there’s tens of thousands who believed that they could so how become a pilot through one of the navy’s enlisted commissioning programs.
Great movie and recruiting campaign for the navy.
The role of "Phoenix" was written and portrayed quite well. Wasn't a hard-case, love interest, or be-otch. Just an exceptional pilot with a quick wit and is a team leader. Loved the movie and will watch it several more times in the future I'm sure. Also loved the Maverick and Ice scene.
Watched Topgun-Maverick last night at my night local cinema - seen it twice now. Enjoyed it much more second time round. Really loved the characters, and Phoenix in particular. In my opinion a much better movie than Topgun 1 which was a great movie for its time. So yep - well done Tom Cruise and directors.
Having the sequel over thirty years later gave the opportunity for the whole Rooster storyline and Penny. Even though we don't get to know a lot about what happened in those years, we know it's there and it makes the story and characters deeper.
Spoiler Alert! Maverick should be an Ace-plus one! When Maverick crashed landed the old F14 onto the carrier, he qualified as "downing" another enemy aircraft.
Well, he also crashed his own F-14 in the first movie, I guess those cancel out.

Its not just a job. Its an adventure. Seats are reserved, tickets in hands. Just waiting for showtime.
"He called you a man, Phoenix. You gonna take that?"
"So long as he doesn't call you a man."
this sounded much better in my language dub
"Have you ever been mistaken as a man?"
Vasquez: "No. Have you?"
it is awesome , great experience for all movie goers around the world , bravo , coolest cast of actors
Monica Barbaro (Phoenix) did a great job with the film 💪
Looking so forward to seeing this movie!
SAME! Taking my wife with me next weekend, whether she wants to go or not!
@@steadychaosproductions3376 Your wife will love it
AMEN!!
@@steadychaosproductions3376 tell her take me to top gun or lose me forever lol
@@gregson99 lol
I seen the movie already. And this still gives me goosebumps. Crazy man.
Probably my favorite character of this new crew
❤❤❤❤ The realism of this really hits you- brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for showing what soldiers go through and are asked to do at a moments notice.
Best part about Phoenix is she doesn't take shit from anyone. She doesn't act like feminist. She's a Top Gun fighter pilot who is just badass and rightfully own her place.
Phoenix you go girl love it
Spoiler alert! Im gonna say the movie was great accurate and moderate realistic Cgi like from 10 years from now
The problem is Movie Logic is still there
If Main Characters Shoots enemies
"BOOM"
if Enemy shoots Maverick
Just nahhhhh
Can't be killing the lead now can we? Can we......movie was great.
To be fair this happens in RL also....you may or may not be aware the F-15 Eagle has approximately a 108 kills to 0 loses kill-ratio in air combat. So lots of Shoot Enemy = BOOM, Get Shot at = Just Nah ;)
Someone on UA-cam mentioned a Top Gun 3, and I'm saying there really doesn't need to be a third installment.
Yes there is
Didn't need to be a second either
@@jackcraven7979 Second was better than the original - a proper bookend but I cannot imagine where they would go from here.
Tom Cruises is a colossus, operating on a different level.
Those IMAX cameras are amazing...
Me too! It’s gonna BE TOM CRUISE AWESOME!
damn, is Tom Cruise training the next generation of Tom Cruise?
This might be the only movie I will see in theaters multiple times 😂
Up to three...
Me too. 3 times lol
I LOVE PHOENIX! She was the MOST badAss expert, TOPGUN pilot in the flick!
Movie of the year!
