- the greatest try scorer ever seen was a skinny winger who'd debuted for Eastern Suburbs in Sydney, later to become Sydney Roosters, in 1942. That man was Brian Earl Bevan. With on 8 games for Sydney he arrived on these shores from the Australian Navy and offered his services to Leeds. They considered him too skinny to play Rugby League, so another former Wire and Eastern Suburbs player Bill Shankland advised him to try Wilderspool. So he went for a trial at Warrington who snapped him up after his first A team match. 18 seasons and 740 Warrington tries later, he had proved himself to be, if not the best player ever, then arguably the best winger and most certainly, by at least 200 tries, the sports greatest ever try scorer. 740 tries for Wire in 620 games, then another 17 in 42 games for Blackpool. Although he never played for Australia, because he played in this country, but he did play against them. And scored. Obviously. He did though play for Other Nationalities and British Empire teams 18 times, scoring 29 tries. It's hard to describe what a phenomenon he was. It wasn't just his overall speed, but his speed off the mark, with in three or four strides he was at full speed and then there was no catching him. He could side step at full speed and not lose a yard. Embarrassing international players with his sublime skill. So watch this and see what you think, as footage of 'The Old Man' is very rare
Brian Bevan was the greatest winger ever. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times. I wish he had been playing today with all the methods they have now for training etc. He was simply a try scoring machine and we will never see his likes again.
don spedding we won't se someone like him again because defenses are 50x better
I know what you're saying, but you have to compare him to what others in his era were doing Mickey. He was miles better than them and it was over such a massive period of time.

I read his book, and was in tears at the testimonials from people who simply loved him.
Magic you did not by any chance work for Royal Mail at Warrington in the early 1980s? I remember speaking to a Warrington supporter who told me that the first game he attended as a young boy was Bev's last game against Leigh in April 1962.

My first ever match aged 7. Warrington v Blackpool Borough Jan 24th 1959, Bev got three tries.Can’t remember that much but saw him a few times- what a memory to have!
Bevan, Cooper, Boston, Vollenhoven, all legends. I was privileged to see them all. How true the story about Bevan on holiday at Butlins is I'm not sure. It is said he entered the 100yd race. The organisers, due to his appearance gave him several yards start.
Cooper rarely gets motioned for some reason yet his scoring rate was as good as and better in some than Bevan. I know that Bevan did run the Power Hall sprints and win. Officially he did 100 yards in 10.6 seconds on grass in shorts and vest at Loushers Lane fete in Warrington
@@Bren23 Their scoring rates were almost identical. Cooper played 333 games for Huddersfield and scored 420 tries. By the end of the 1953/54 season Bevan had played 334 games for Warrington and had scored 425 tries.
@@Bren23 Following my reply earlier highlighting that Cooper's try-scoring ratio was almost identical to that of Bevan, I thought I would refer to a post I saw on a discussion thread a few years ago. A poster argued that Bevan was overrated! He also highlighted that Cooper scored just as many tries as Bevan did between 1947 and 1955 before he returned to Australia. He further contended that between 1957 and 1962 Tom Van Vollenhoven and Billy Boston were outscoring Bevan. I don't know how good Bevan was as I never saw him play. I can also say that having read many match-reports in the Warrington Guardian and Examiner at Warrington Library he was a very fast, exciting player.

Saw him play against GB in Alex Murphy's testimonial game at Wilderspool he was opposite Keith Fielding no slouch himself, i believe that GB had decided to let Bev score at the Fletcher St end and he duly walked over from 1 yard away from the ko they kicked the ball to him he caught it Fielding left no more than half a yard to the touchline and the in field sort of open Bev looked inside went outside fielding gave chase but threw his hands up just after the halfway line as he couldn't catch him.....this was circa '74'75 and Bev had been retired several years by then what a sight for me (and the crowd) as an 11 yr old seeing in real time the stories my grandad and dad had told me.....happy days

Holy moly over 700 tries, I thought Billy Boston scored a lot, but this man was unbelievable.

No he didn't, unfortunately, as he played in the UK, although he did get picked for All Star teams, scoring more tries than games played. He is in the Australian Hall of Fame though. And the tries he scored when wearing green, he was 40 at the time...!

What always intrigues me watching the old footage is ….where are all the fat forwards people talk about?
Interesting fact: In his first grade career with Eastern Suburbs in Australia, he didn't score a try.
