Let's go through the sentence, filling in the blanks word by word, and explaining why each choice is grammatically correct:
    1. **Injured**:
    - "A huge gas blast in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, has killed at least three people and **injured** nearly 300."
    - **Explanation**: The verb "injured" is the correct choice because it means causing harm or damage to someone's body. The sentence describes the effects of a gas blast, which typically results in injuries rather than cremation (burning of a body after death). "Cremated" would be incorrect because it refers to a post-death process, not something that happens to the living.
    2. **Exploded**:
    - "A lorry carrying gas **exploded** in Embakasi district at about 23:00 (GMT)."
    - **Explanation**: "Exploded" is the correct past tense verb here. The event described has already happened, so the simple past tense "exploded" is appropriate. "Explodes" would be present tense, "has exploded" would imply a recent past event with ongoing relevance, and "had exploded" would be used if the explosion occurred before another past event, neither of which applies here.
    3. **Igniting**:
    - "...**igniting** a huge ball of fire,” a government spokesperson said."
    - **Explanation**: "Igniting" is the correct choice because it continues the action described by the previous verb "exploded." The word "igniting" is in the present participle form, which describes an action happening as a result of the explosion. It connects the two actions smoothly.
    4. **Were damaged**:
    - "Housing, businesses and cars **were damaged**, with video showing a huge blaze raging close to blocks of flats."
    - **Explanation**: "Were damaged" is the correct form because it’s in the passive voice, indicating that the houses, businesses, and cars were affected by an external action (the explosion). "Damages" is incorrect because it would be present tense, "damaged" without the auxiliary verb would be grammatically incomplete, and "have damaged" would suggest that the houses, businesses, and cars did the damage themselves, which is not the case.
    5. **Blaze**:
    - "...with video showing a huge **blaze** raging close to blocks of flats."
    - **Explanation**: "Blaze" is the correct word because it refers to a large, destructive fire, which fits the context of a gas explosion. "Rage" would describe intense anger or violence but doesn’t fit as a noun in this context, and "cage" is unrelated.
    6. **Cordoned off**:
    - "The area has been **cordoned off** and an investigation is under way into the cause of the explosion."
    - **Explanation**: "Cordoned off" is the correct phrase because it means to block or restrict access to an area, which is a common response after such incidents. "Rattled off" means to quickly say something and "waive off" means to dismiss or ignore, both of which are incorrect in this context.
    7. **Way**:
    - "...and an investigation is under **way** into the cause of the explosion."
    - **Explanation**: The phrase "under way" is correct and idiomatic, meaning that the investigation has already started. The other options "rules" and "the bridge" are unrelated to the context of starting an investigation.
Each word fits into the blank because it accurately reflects the meaning intended by the sentence and follows proper grammatical rules for tense, voice, and word choice.

Have a doubt on the answer #2. 'Exploded' or 'Had exploded'
how can we choose the correct form?

    • @NeelPatel-lu4hy
      @NeelPatel-lu4hy 20 днів тому

The difference between "exploded" and "had exploded" lies in their tense and the context in which they're used:
      1. "Exploded": This is the simple past tense. It refers to an action that happened at a specific point in the past. For example: "The bomb exploded yesterday."
      2. "Had exploded": This is the past perfect tense. It indicates that an action was completed before another action or point in the past. For example: "The bomb had exploded before the police arrived."
So, use "exploded" for straightforward past events, and "had exploded" to show that one past event happened before another past event.
