Hey everyone! As a reminder, our shop is only servicing our own fleet and owner operator's rigs. We are not servicing trucks outside of this at the moment! If you are in Chicago and want to join a company that has its own dedicated shop - you can apply at erateam.us Keep trucking!
Had this happen to me but i did the instructions in this video and it still wouldn’t come loose. Had some guys try to help me but they couldn’t get it either so I Had to call a mechanic. He showed up and pulled the release arm like it was nothing and looked at me like I was crazy.
😂😂😂 I wonder what was the problem then? Did the mechanic said anything to you of why was the reason you weren’t able to release it but he did? Wha r did he do different ?
I hi hooked a reefer once. Didn't hit the cab but sure came close! Used a block of wood to tilt the 5th wheel and get back out. Also in the winter if you have snow on the 5th wheel and back under a trailer, I've had it not lock. So i sweep the snow off of it before I back under a trailer. Funny how 5th wheel grease seems to get everywhere
Thank you for putting together a video where something goes wrong. Far too many videos focus on ideal scenarios where everything goes right. You learn so much more when a problem gets solved.
Am a truck driver for over ten years never knew this was going through hell today. In releasing my fifth wheel normally I think it was the ground not level. But today I googled for help got your video Problem solved crazy nobody thought me this trick in driving school 😅
Thanks! I had this issue twice and I was in a hurry the other day. Happened again and people looking at me like I'm a dumbass lol and honestly I felt like one but I got back in my truck and found this video. It worked. Thank you. Right now I seen someone having the same issue and I was about to go tell him to try this out but someone else helped him. They went and did something by the lever. I'm not sure what they did but it worked for him.
Went over the 5th wheel once while training with a loaded trl. Never again. I’ll never forget that experience tryin to jack that thing up when it’s fully loaded to get back over the other side of fifth wheel
Want to know a easier way? On the passenger side is a large pin that sticks out. Take a piece of 4x4 or a metal rod and hit that while pulling or figure out how to pull and hold it open, then pound on that pin till it releases. It is the emergency release pin. Then when you have the trailer coming off take ya a can of pb blaster and spray the heck out of the moving mechanisms under the plate, jerk the release handle a few times and you'll feel it free up. So recap of that jibberish. Passenger side has emergency release pin, smack it while having release handle pulled and it will release. Then spray under side of plate workings, springs bars ECT really good with pb blaster so it eats any dirt and grease build up off. Work the handle a few times, spray some more if needed, and your good to go. I fix them daily like that.
I bet this issue happens more than what one would think. I’ve never encountered it though, but I have encountered one that wouldn’t latch onto the kingpin. Thanks for covering this issue...Tis a good visual to make the point. 🤩
only happens on old trucks with rusted 5th wheels. many cheap assholes don't wanna fix it. you probably got a newish truck, we drive POS old broken ass trucks, happnes a lot
This happens frequently on inclines when the pressure is to the front of the rig. Once you put this trick in your pocket, then you know how to solve it every time.
If your truck model has an air release for opening the 5th wheel jaws, use it in combination with the air suspension dump. Way easier than this mess, and often the only solution when jaws won't stay open.
The CDL manual says not to have the service and spring brakes engaged at the same time. Is that something that is now outdated and is no longer an issue?
Thanks for this but mine was not a pressure problem...and i still dont know exactly what it was but i sprayed everything down with PB Blaster underneath and it eventually got loose and released.
Doing exactly that, but in opposite - purposely blocking the handle. Saves you lots of trouble, rage and disappointment in humanity, at truck stops while rolling in for break/night pause. Old school "trick" against those sick motherfkers pulling out the 5 wheel blockade, while you sleep. Nevertheless proper PTI is a must *always* .
All good until you have an internal malfunction. I had to try to move another drivers truck from under my trailer and nothing helped. Even the mechanic came and couldn't get it to release. Good thing dispatch gave me a different empty to take instead of messing with that.
@@TruckYoo yeah mate, they’re a legal requirement, gotta have them otherwise the truck’s deemed unroadworthy. We just drop the airbags as we back under and lift back up before we get to the pin
@@TruckYoo you’ll see alot of really nice trucks running stainless steel arches over too 👌🏻have a look at the kenworth T909, T900 legend, T950 legend and SAR legend 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
There's a better explanation video on why release handle get stuck aside from this video instruction this is not really stock Fifth wheel. In another video show why Fifth wheel and pin get stuck is because of the release arm handle was not in proper position in the first place then it gets jammed on the release handle bar There's two notch upper and lower notch by moving the release handle bar in the proper position which is the first notch when king pin is locked in push and pull upward to sink it in the first notch will release the king pin. May need some muscle to position it. Notice the release arm handle/lever has two notches that's where you want the lever to sit in place.
These things are just complete crap. I've had to have mine repaired 20 times in the past month. Just refuses to put air into the cylinder on the release. Food thing its a lease rental and doesn't cost me shit. I'll never buy one and urge others to avoid. You have to get out anyways and can just set trailer brakes and back up to release tension to pull a normal one with zero problems as is

Was the locking jaw stuck in the locking positing thus unable to latch around the kingpin?
This happens frequently on inclines when the pressure is to the front of the rig. Once you put this trick in your pocket, then you know how to solve it every time.
I thought i was boutta be stuck in this lot all night, ty super helpful.

Worked!!!!
And what do you do when it's not a pressure issue?
Exactly
Yep...my is stuck now also 😔. I have tried everything. Backing up, nope, dropped air bags slid fifth wheel....nope...
@Greenlightsportsmix Nope, also stuck
Mine too
I see one spring disconnected...it might be you guys have the same issue

Thank you. Just saved me time and money
Thanks! New driver here
Thank you I was too damn tired to figure this out. You saved me now I can sleep...
Saved my ass just now with this thank you
I just used this method and works. Tnx all.
Defenitely worked
What really sucks is the new international LT’s don’t have an airbag suspension release so you can dump your airbags.
This video is so great, thanks!
This helped me. I was so confused as to why it was stuck
Thanks this just helped me and my buddy drop a trailer
The CDL manual says not to have the service and spring brakes engaged at the same time. Is that something that is now outdated and is no longer an issue?
Works great 👌🏼👌🏼
Thank you 🙏🏻
glad thank you

Good advice. Make it impossible for idiots to mess with your handle.
Good info, thanks

Thank you so much. It worked! 😊
Lifesaver. Thank you.

Wow thanks man that was epic stuff great 💪🏾👍🏾
I got that same claw lock, hate it, everytime its a struggle to pull it
Very helpful thankyou
Thanks it really works
Saved me thanks! 😁👍
How come you guys don’t use any wheel arches on your prime movers(tractors)?
🇦🇺
The get damaged a lot and they are not required. Are they required in Australia?
@@TruckYoo yeah mate, they’re a legal requirement, gotta have them otherwise the truck’s deemed unroadworthy. We just drop the airbags as we back under and lift back up before we get to the pin

do you need to drop the airbags to drop a trailer??
I was looking for this comment but sadly no one replied 😢
Thank you 🙏🏾
Hope that works for me next time because my shoulder is about to give out !!
JB hunt intermodal container! Is that one of your customers?
Thank you so much!!!!
What if u release the pressure and still hard to pull
My question exactly and no one has an answer. This just gets repeated over and over! Grrr
Hmmm maybe some proper grease would help?
OMG it worked
Thank you
Are you still hiring drivers?
This USUALLY works…today after 17 years of driving I can’t get it to work.
My handle pulls out but will not stay out..why
You should have shown what the kingpin looked like with the pin pulled.
These things are just complete crap. I've had to have mine repaired 20 times in the past month. Just refuses to put air into the cylinder on the release. Thaaaaank you
