PA2 is exactly what it is supposed to be: A fun movie for people to watch multiple times. 1,2 and 3 were the best ones. Zed becoming an officer was always funny, to me.
To me PA 5 was when they started to slip it was funny don't get me wrong Rene Auberjonois was really funny in it but sadly lacking Steve Guttenberg. Who could resist uttering the word DORK to GW Bailey if you ever saw him on the street. 6 was well erm bad and Mission to Moscow is a lesson of how not to make a PA film even though the director wanted to make a culture clash comedy but the studio said no to that and Christopher Lee only appeared in it as a favour to his long time friend and PA producer Paul Maslansky who also produced along with Alan Ladd Jr the grisly and brilliant low budget British horror film Death Line aka Raw Meat as it was called in the US which starred Donald Pleasence and David Ladd (Alan Ladd Jrs Son) in which Christopher Lee appeared as an MI5 agent in one scene. So if you ever did a 10 things you didn't know about Death Line you could say that this film is from the producers that went on to make Police Academy

HEY MINTY!! I was a stand-up comedian for.....EVER, and I got to know a few people in the movie business. One is an award winning, Director, Screenwriter and Producer, who worked on the CONJURING 3, and Annabelle comes home, plus a buttload of other films, as well as television shows. I can't say her name, but I will tell you, that I called her in Atlanta a few minutes ago and asked about the "Mystery Woman" on the Police Academy 2 poster. According to her, and a very well known actor, (she was on set), the woman was, the late actress, Angela Aames. According to my friend (and the actor), Angela Aames was supposed to be in the movie and that's why she was on the poster, but was replaced by Colleen Camp. I hope that clears up the mystery. @@thegreenbird795 Actually, that voice was just one of many Bob did in shows prior to making it big. It was in a skit about a farmer telling a story about how aliens came down and giving him a Chiclet. TV started calling for "the guy who screams a lot" so it morphed into his entire character. Bob is one of the funniest people and a master at dealing with hecklers. Not to mention a super nice guy.
Screw the critics, PA2 is a great film with loads of great gags. I have never personally compared it to PA1 because it is more than good enough. The franchise didn’t get weak at the second outing. Kirkland’s Dad and Bro, hilarious!
Police Academy 1 and 2 are hilarious. 3 is fun and still has some laughs. 4 is absolutely bonkers and the least cohesive. 5 and 6 are watchable with amusing moments. 7 should never have been made. This is coming from an 80s kid who has all 1-6 on vhs 📼 and grew up with a police officer for a Father. These movies were a big part of my childhood. Huge nostalgia factor. Thanks Minty.🎥👍

I LOVE the scene where Mahoney is reciting the Miranda Rights to the bunch of hoodlums in the cage on the back of the Police truck. One of the rights he states after the customary right to remain silent and right to an attorney is: You have the right to cable T.V. It always cracked me up and was really keeping in with the Mahoney character! Loved it!

Howard Hesseman who played the Captain passed away last week. He was best known for his role as the loveable wasted DJ Johnny Fever on the hit tv show WKRP In Cincinnati
This is one of those movies/series I consider "comfort content" - nostalgic, goofy, yes ok even stupid but in a loveable way, and endlessly watchable because it brings back the feeling of the time. As Minty says, not high art.... but still a favorite. 👍

This was my second favorite in the series. I love the back and forth between Zed and Sweetchuck, Tackleberry and his new partner, and all of the wacky hijinks

Its great that Zed and Sweetchuck have a story arc between movies. They go from arch enemies in 2, to reluctant roommates in 3, to partners in 4. These films were always more about gags than character evolution, so it is surprising to see!

What I particularly enjoy about those older, silly comedies (I just rewatched Airplane a few days ago) is the wonderful lack of political correctness bullcrap that is constantly shoved down our throats these days.
Likewise and I am a bit of an odd one as 5 and 6 are my favorites but i do enjoy the whole series minus 7. Never did see the TV show or the cartoon either.
I was a kid of the '80's, so I remember the pop culture of the time surrounding these movies. The first 4 Police Academy movies hold nostalgic memories for me, anything after is nothing but a blur, and I can't recall if I actually SAW the more later releases. It just seems like a series they drilled into the ground and took all the fun out of.
The 80's were so different in tone. We still had bad crime inflation and high taxes but we had fun things as well.....now everything just fucking sucks 😞
The 90s and even the 00s in some ways were more similar to the 70s than they are to now. We had free speech then. Smoking was still legal in non residential buildings though often banned by landlords and employers. That is what is meant by a voluntary ban. It doesn't mean you can still smoker but the owner or manager or the building or business can ban smoking there or evict you. Restrictions in movement started with 9-11 in 2001 and led to the Covid restrictions. Covid should have been treated like the swine flu pandemic in 2009.
I love most of the PA films. I like that you can just completely turn your brain off and watch them. Sad that quite a few of the characters are no longer with us, such as Tackleberry, Hightower and Hooks.
For me, the downfall started in Police Academy 4. As fun as that movie was, it was extremely predictable and crazy formulaic without adding anything new like the second movie adding new faces and the third basically remixing the cast. The second movie is actually my favorite of the series.
Honestly I began with 3, there is a LOT of recycling jokes from the first flick. I watched 1 and 3 back to back the other night and noticed it for the first time.

Forgive me if I’m repeating an answer to a question. The mystery blonde woman on the poster was an in joke by poster artist Drew Struzan. The first film had a special advertisement for video tape release. This included the mysterious blonde woman. The advertising executives loved it so much, the Drew decided to add her to the poster for the second movie. He discusses this in one of his books. Awesome job on your videos, as usual.
Proctor was a great addition to the cast. He made the movie for me. I always wondered why Barbara didn't return. It's too bad... but the cat poop thing doesnt really suit his character anyways. I love PA 2, and I even enjoy 3 for the most part. But after that it goes downhill pretty fast. I seem to remember that I could rent PA2 from the video store because it wasnt rated R, but not the first one, so number 2 was the one I started with. Thats probably why it has such a soft spot. It really is just a series of gags that barely connect though.
It would've been interesting to see Donavon Scott reprising his role of Leslie Barbara, if not in Police Academy 2, in any of the other sequels, kinda like when they brought back Fackler in Police Academy 5 or 6, whichever Police Academy he'd returned in ( Which definitely wasn't Police Academy 4) It'd been interesting to see where his character development went

I think the second Police Academy was a good follow up to the first movie. It did go along the lines of the first movie in terms of a bunch of screw ups becoming cops and finding out their new partners are just as human as they are 🙃
Extra tidbit: In the spanish (latin american) version it's called "Locademia de Policia" in which "Locademia" is the amalgamation of the words "Loca" and "Academia" ... which in turn mean "Mad" and "Academy", respectively. If we were to translate that to english it'd be something like "Police Mad-cademy".

I’ve always liked part 2 better than the first one. I saw part 2 in the theatre because it was rated PG. the first one I missed in the theatre because it was rated R and I was under age at the time. Back in the 80’s in Canada where I’m from, theatres was more strict on letting in younger audiences at a rated R film than they are these days.
I totally agree with you regarding nostalgia. I have a special place in my heart for this movie and I thought it was hilarious. Every sequel AFTER part 2, I could care less about. I used to watch this film on my Beta all the time...good times. My favorite bit has to be the ending, when Mahoney punches Zed down the stairs and the whole time he's rolling down, he's saying "That didn't hurt" over and over. Then, when he finally hits the bottom, Hooks stomps his hand and he yells, "THAT HURT".
I personally always enjoyed the first 4, and thought the 5th was terrible, so I never even watched the 6th one. Of course, I was a kid. I wonder, if I watched them now, would I still enjoy them, or find them stupid?

I find it cool that Paxton not being be in this movie to take the Aliens role helped his and Bobcats careers . Paxton has some of the most memorable and repeated lines from Aliens to this day .
Although Donavan Scott not returning as Leslie Barbara was sad, the addition of comedian actor Tim Kazarinski was loads of fun. As for Bobcat, as a Bipolar child (and now adult), his manic screaming comedy always tickled me, because I saw my own manic humor in his performances. I've loved seeing G.W. Bailey in M*A*S*H T.V. series, then later as Lt Provenza in the T.V. shows The Closer, then Major Crimes. Same with Bruce McGill, whom I first saw in Animal House, later in The Last Boy Scout (albeit briefly), and finally as Sgt Korshach(sp?), in Rizolli and Eiles. Sadly we lost many of the cast members of this movie and the original. First David Graff (2001) Who played the beloved Tackleberry, then th lovely lady who played Officer Laverne Hooks (Marion Ramsey, 2021), Howard Hessman, our beloved Dr Johnny Fever, who was also very good in Head Of The Class. (2022) Bubba Smith (2011) And was there a black and white picture with the late, great Tim Ross in it? He might have been in the photo with either the director of PA2 or, one of its producers. And last but not least, Art Metrano/Mauser (2021). If I've missed anyone, please let me know. ETA: That IS Tim Ross with the director of the movie. Might be a still from Barney Miller, which I loved. And of course NO ONE can replace Tim Ross as Shepherd Book in Firefly and it's theatrical release of Serenity, (which shares the same name as Firefly's ACTUAL Pilot film). RIP, you wonderful entertainers, you'll all be missed!
Yeah, Bubba Smith was born on February 28th, like I am! I was so happy to find that out since Hightower is one of my favorite characters in these movies.
Looking back on my childhood, I have to say that I like the second part just as much as its predecessor! They matched the tone of the original very well and I like the new characters, especially ZED :-)
I actually just watched this movie a few weeks ago for the first time in about 30 years. It was still as funny as the first time I saw it. And the new characters they brought in worked out quite well.
Russian swearword on the phone booth that Mahoney destroyed to gain trust and infiltrate the gang is what struck us back in the VHS days there in the Soviet Union.
Things you didn't know about Dave Graf, aka: Tackleberry. He graduated from Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Ohio. His mother was a nurse on the maternity floor in the hospital in Lancaster. He was a year (or two?) younger than my parents, and they were often at the same parties together. He had a crush on my mom, whose name was Kathy, all through High School and, ironically, ended up marrying a woman named Cathy.

Javier, those are two wonderful suggestions. Hardly anybody knows about "With Honors," but it is probably Joe Pesci's best performance ever. He was amazing in that film. And "A Walk in the Clouds" is a hidden Keanu Reeves gem that most people have forgotten about (before his Matrix and John Wick fame). Thank you for suggesting those. And honestly, Keanu had a ton of good films before the Matrix came along (even Parenthood, which people forget he was in). Have a good day.

I can't put into words how hilarious it was when my misinformed cop father (Trailers didn't run like they do today kiddies) brought the entire family to see the first film. After we wouldn't all stop laughing/reminiscing and he got over his bravado and the fact that he didn't do a deeper check to what it really was, he couldn't help but admit how funny it was. It was amazing going back to the theater just one year later to follow up on the hilarity!! The original is securely a classic. I of course have the Box Set, but I usually don't go past PA4 *Citizens On Patrol* because *Police Academy* without Steve Guttenberg is just blasphemously wrong and clearly a studio property cash-in which sucks! As the day it was released, this was a great addition that met my 10yr old expectations!
The guy from Dumb and Dumber is Mike Starr. Also, GW Bailey (Harris) did appear in the film in the wedding sequence. He is shot from the back as a wedding guest who gets his picture taken by the photographer.
My feelinvs are that PA1 is a good introduction mkvie, 2 is funnier and has better characters overall. PA1 while a comedy has a more serious tone which I feel overall makes if more of a complete movie, but PA2 starts leaning more to slapstick, one liner style comedy with hints of fantasy that do grow as series goes on. PA2 and PA3 are the balance points bevore reallh starts going off the rails with 4 through 7. I find 2 and 3 more rewatchable then 1, then 4 through 7 in order of watchability and quality. PA3 is the often overlooked hidden gem in the series.
For the poster, the long hair suggests the Cathleen character. Although an early draft of the poster (before casting was complete) could have had Callahan, the image would have been changed to fit the second film but may not have been changed completely, thus showing features from the first character.
13:02 - Kathleen - she is even on the opposite side of Tackleberry behind Mahoney. Even I always knew that. This drawing on the poster was not always brightly tinted for her to look so light blonde either.

The guy that did the voices did a impromptu stand-up at our coffee shop at my university. That guy is absolutely incredible! I don't think there was a sound he couldn't emulate.
This was the first movie in the series I saw, and saw, and saw. I loved it so much I then saw the first one and the other 4 in the series. I never heard of 5 or 6 so I would be at a loss with those. But Policy Academy 2 has ALL the classic funny Police antics scenes I knew and loved as a kid and even more as an adult! Police Academy is also why I fell in love with "The Police" force. Don't even get me started on Super Troopers and Ride along, Copout, Lets be cops and Blue Streak, Bad boys and so many other comedy cop movies.. Dragnet 1987.. wow.. LOL.

Loved these movies used to rent them from a local video place every weekend. They had a special for older movies,6 movies for $6 all weekend. It was almost guaranteed that at least 3 of my choices were police academy movies.
I remember when I was a kid in 85 or 86 and we just got a VCR. Police Academy was the first VHS I remember renting. I loved the movies as a kid. I should rewatch them all.
Just quick translation for the "Belgian" version. It's actually Dutch and it roughly translates to "Kicking ass" (Beuk comes from beuken which is slang for punching/hitting)

@@thegreenbird795 Actually, that voice was just one of many Bob did in shows prior to making it big. It was in a skit about a farmer telling a story about how aliens came down and giving him a Chiclet. TV started calling for "the guy who screams a lot" so it morphed into his entire character. Bob is one of the funniest people and a master at dealing with hecklers. Not to mention a super nice guy.

Screw the critics, PA2 is a great film with loads of great gags. I have never personally compared it to PA1 because it is more than good enough. The franchise didn’t get weak at the second outing. Kirkland’s Dad and Bro, hilarious!

Guttenberg’s acting was very similar to Bill Murray’s in Ghostbusters. Very laid back, slightly sarcastic, but vaguely in charge. Loved it.
Hmm I'm surprised this film did so well since many critics thought it was a rip off of Murray's film Stripes.

Police Academy 1 and 2 are hilarious. 3 is fun and still has some laughs. 4 is absolutely bonkers and the least cohesive. 5 and 6 are watchable with amusing moments. 7 should never have been made. This is coming from an 80s kid who has all 1-6 on vhs 📼 and grew up with a police officer for a Father.
These movies were a big part of my childhood. Huge nostalgia factor.

I LOVE the scene where Mahoney is reciting the Miranda Rights to the bunch of hoodlums in the cage on the back of the Police truck. One of the rights he states after the customary right to remain silent and right to an attorney is: You have the right to cable T.V. It always cracked me up and was really keeping in with the Mahoney character! Loved it!

What I love most about this channel is that NO ONE would EVER do a 10 ANYTHING for Police Academy TWO! And all the info is so interesting.
This is one of those movies/series I consider "comfort content" - nostalgic, goofy, yes ok even stupid but in a loveable way, and endlessly watchable because it brings back the feeling of the time. As Minty says, not high art.... but still a favorite. 👍

Its great that Zed and Sweetchuck have a story arc between movies. They go from arch enemies in 2, to reluctant roommates in 3, to partners in 4. These films were always more about gags than character evolution, so it is surprising to see!

I was a kid of the '80's, so I remember the pop culture of the time surrounding these movies. The first 4 Police Academy movies hold nostalgic memories for me, anything after is nothing but a blur, and I can't recall if I actually SAW the more later releases. It just seems like a series they drilled into the ground and took all the fun out of.

The 80's were so different in tone. We still had bad crime inflation and high taxes but we had fun things as well.....now everything just fucking sucks 😞
The 90s and even the 00s in some ways were more similar to the 70s than they are to now. We had free speech then. Smoking was still legal in non residential buildings though often banned by landlords and employers. That is what is meant by a voluntary ban. It doesn't mean you can still smoker but the owner or manager or the building or business can ban smoking there or evict you. Restrictions in movement started with 9-11 in 2001 and led to the Covid restrictions. Covid should have been treated like the swine flu pandemic in 2009.
I love most of the PA films. I like that you can just completely turn your brain off and watch them. Sad that quite a few of the characters are no longer with us, such as Tackleberry, Hightower and Hooks.

For me, the downfall started in Police Academy 4. As fun as that movie was, it was extremely predictable and crazy formulaic without adding anything new like the second movie adding new faces and the third basically remixing the cast. The second movie is actually my favorite of the series.
4 was the start of it, Yeah going downhill. 5 took it further and then finally shit the bed at 7. I actually love part 6. I thought it was great.
Honestly I began with 3, there is a LOT of recycling jokes from the first flick. I watched 1 and 3 back to back the other night and noticed it for the first time.

Forgive me if I’m repeating an answer to a question. The mystery blonde woman on the poster was an in joke by poster artist Drew Struzan. The first film had a special advertisement for video tape release. This included the mysterious blonde woman. The advertising executives loved it so much, the Drew decided to add her to the poster for the second movie. He discusses this in one of his books. Awesome job on your videos, as usual.

My mom took me to see this one in the theater when I was 3. I LOVED every film in the entire franchise.
Proctor was a great addition to the cast. He made the movie for me. I always wondered why Barbara didn't return. It's too bad... but the cat poop thing doesnt really suit his character anyways. I love PA 2, and I even enjoy 3 for the most part. But after that it goes downhill pretty fast. I seem to remember that I could rent PA2 from the video store because it wasnt rated R, but not the first one, so number 2 was the one I started with. Thats probably why it has such a soft spot. It really is just a series of gags that barely connect though.
It would've been interesting to see Donavon Scott reprising his role of Leslie Barbara, if not in Police Academy 2, in any of the other sequels, kinda like when they brought back Fackler in Police Academy 5 or 6, whichever Police Academy he'd returned in ( Which definitely wasn't Police Academy 4)

I always assumed Barbara didn't retrun because he was one of the weakest in the first movie.

I liked Bob's of how he portrayed Zed. Zed was the angry, street thug, who had a sensitive side, and was misunderstood by most.

I think the second Police Academy was a good follow up to the first movie. It did go along the lines of the first movie in terms of a bunch of screw ups becoming cops and finding out their new partners are just as human as they are 🙃
Extra tidbit: In the spanish (latin american) version it's called "Locademia de Policia" in which "Locademia" is the amalgamation of the words "Loca" and "Academia" ... which in turn mean "Mad" and "Academy", respectively. If we were to translate that to english it'd be something like "Police Mad-cademy".

I met Donovan along with many of the original and sequel cast members (including Steve Guttenberg!) back in 2018 at an event called The Hollywood Show in Los Angeles! I had already befriended Donovan on Facebook and still keep in touch with him. About two or three years ago, he had posted about the PA2 script experience to which I felt just had to be shared on IMDB, so I thank you Minty for adding that to this video! PA 1,2,3 l can watch over again. The rest felt like Disney comedies when they became PG rated movies. PA rated R, PA 2 & 3 rated PG-13!

I’ve always liked part 2 better than the first one. I saw part 2 in the theatre because it was rated PG. the first one I missed in the theatre because it was rated R and I was under age at the time. Back in the 80’s in Canada where I’m from, theatres was more strict on letting in younger audiences at a rated R film than they are these days.
I totally agree with you regarding nostalgia. I have a special place in my heart for this movie and I thought it was hilarious. Every sequel AFTER part 2, I could care less about. I used to watch this film on my Beta all the time...good times.
My favorite bit has to be the ending, when Mahoney punches Zed down the stairs and the whole time he's rolling down, he's saying "That didn't hurt" over and over. Then, when he finally hits the bottom, Hooks stomps his hand and he yells, "THAT HURT".
I personally always enjoyed the first 4, and thought the 5th was terrible, so I never even watched the 6th one.
Of course, I was a kid. I wonder, if I watched them now, would I still enjoy them, or find them stupid?

I find it cool that Paxton not being be in this movie to take the Aliens role helped his and Bobcats careers . Paxton has some of the most memorable and repeated lines from Aliens to this day .

As for Bobcat, as a Bipolar child (and now adult), his manic screaming comedy always tickled me, because I saw my own manic humor in his performances.
I've loved seeing G.W. Bailey in M*A*S*H T.V. series, then later as Lt Provenza in the T.V. shows The Closer, then Major Crimes.
Same with Bruce McGill, whom I first saw in Animal House, later in The Last Boy Scout (albeit briefly), and finally as Sgt Korshach(sp?), in Rizolli and Eiles. I'm sure I've seen him in other things but, those 3 stand out.

Yeah, Bubba Smith was born on February 28th, like I am! I was so happy to find that out since Hightower is one of my favorite characters in these movies.
Looking back on my childhood, I have to say that I like the second part just as much as its predecessor! They matched the tone of the original very well and I like the new characters, especially ZED :-)
The only movie with a ton of sequels that actually are all pretty good.. definitely a lot of funny scenes in all of them.

I actually just watched this movie a few weeks ago for the first time in about 30 years. It was still as funny as the first time I saw it. And the new characters they brought in worked out quite well.

He graduated from Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Ohio. His mother was a nurse on the maternity floor in the hospital in Lancaster. He was a year (or two?) younger than my parents, and they were often at the same parties together. He had a crush on my mom, whose name was Kathy, all through High School and, ironically, ended up marrying a woman named Cathy.
I loved all of the police academy movies. Their where my favorites growing up. My grandma still has all of them on vhs.

Javier, those are two wonderful suggestions. Hardly anybody knows about "With Honors," but it is probably Joe Pesci's best performance ever. He was amazing in that film.
And "A Walk in the Clouds" is a hidden Keanu Reeves gem that most people have forgotten about (before his Matrix and John Wick fame).

I can't put into words how hilarious it was when my misinformed cop father (Trailers didn't run like they do today kiddies) brought the entire family to see the first film. After we wouldn't all stop laughing/reminiscing and he got over his bravado and the fact that he didn't do a deeper check to what it really was, he couldn't help but admit how funny it was. It was amazing going back to the theater just one year later to follow up on the hilarity!! The original is securely a classic. I of course have the Box Set, but I usually don't go past PA4 *Citizens On Patrol* because *Police Academy* without Steve Guttenberg is just blasphemously wrong and clearly a studio property cash-in which sucks! As the day it was released, this was a great addition that met my 10yr old expectations!
The guy from Dumb and Dumber is Mike Starr. Also, GW Bailey (Harris) did appear in the film in the wedding sequence. He is shot from the back as a wedding guest who gets his picture taken by the photographer.

Police Academy 2 was hilarious. So was part 3. 4 wasn’t bad but that was the start of the decline.
My feelinvs are that PA1 is a good introduction mkvie, 2 is funnier and has better characters overall. PA1 while a comedy has a more serious tone which I feel overall makes if more of a complete movie, but PA2 starts leaning more to slapstick, one liner style comedy with hints of fantasy that do grow as series goes on.
PA2 and PA3 are the balance points bevore reallh starts going off the rails with 4 through 7. I find 2 and 3 more rewatchable then 1, then 4 through 7 in order of watchability and quality.
PA3 is the often overlooked hidden gem in the series.
For the poster, the long hair suggests the Cathleen character. Although an early draft of the poster (before casting was complete) could have had Callahan, the image would have been changed to fit the second film but may not have been changed completely, thus showing features from the first character.
13:02 - Kathleen - she is even on the opposite side of Tackleberry behind Mahoney. Even I always knew that. This drawing on the poster was not always brightly tinted for her to look so light blonde either.
Stone cutters should have just left Steve Guttenberg alone. Otherwise you get movies like this one.

This was the first movie in the series I saw, and saw, and saw. I loved it so much I then saw the first one and the other 4 in the series. I never heard of 5 or 6 so I would be at a loss with those. But Policy Academy 2 has ALL the classic funny Police antics scenes I knew and loved as a kid and even more as an adult! Police Academy is also why I fell in love with "The Police" force. Don't even get me started on Super Troopers and Ride along, Copout, Lets be cops and Blue Streak, Bad boys and so many other comedy cop movies.. Dragnet 1987.. wow.. LOL.

Loved these movies used to rent them from a local video place every weekend. They had a special for older movies,6 movies for $6 all weekend. It was almost guaranteed that at least 3 of my choices were police academy movies.

Just quick translation for the "Belgian" version. It's actually Dutch and it roughly translates to "Kicking ass" (Beuk comes from beuken which is slang for punching/hitting)
Beuken is a verb that means to kick or punch real hard. Often used in the context of kicking a locked door open.
It's the best of the Police Academy sequels imo. Loved Bobcat Goldthwaite in this!
