I was there that day and it was disappointing that the tech actually hurt instead of helped. After the Olympics I saw that bike again at Aerosports in Huntington Beach where it was for sale. Cool piece of bicycle history win or lose. That old video doesn't do justice to how quirky of a machine that frame was. Wish I had bought it though nowadays.
Legend has it that his aero helmet slipped down over his eyes, and he had to remove a hand from the bars to adjust it. Didn't see it in the video though....Update: I think I can just see him take his right hand off the bars at about 6:02
Yes that is indeed the purpose of the holes. And it wasn't just holes drilled in the tube, each hole had a short section of tube brazed front to back.....
