    What's your favourite style of apron?

      It depends on the purpose for which I wear the apron. The aprons I have now are only practical, they don't really look nice.

    I really enjoyed this video. I think you did a great job for your first attempt. Loved the music too!

    Slightly tangential to the video but i saw one of your videos (about teaching weaving) and just fixed a tension issue with my warp threads on a handmade loom. Thankyou!
    Looking forward to maybe trying smocking now i've seen how it's done

      Smocking was so much easier than I expected. I don't know why I put it off for so many years. If you give it a go, let me know. I love seeing pictures!

    I love your chicken helper! Very fine bit of fun and nice felting. Everyone needs a sewing buddy.
    Having pretty and comfortable tools make doing things nicer. It's never fun to rip seams, but pretty tools and things that make you happy always make even dull chores better, somehow.
    You have a lovely chicken sewing buddy, a beautiful seamripper, and I'm envious of your sewing machine.
    You broke the smocking down into easy sections which made it much more approachable than the patterns and How To guides I have previously looked at. I think I might be able to do that. It would be cute for sleeve headers, or as part of an apron. I have some linen I plan to turn into different things, an experiment sounds doable, as long as I do as you did and not over-reach myself - small things simply done make huge differences.
    Thank you!

      Thanks.
      I'm excited about using smoking for sleeves and clothing. It's a much easier way to gather fabric than I've tried before... except maybe getting the machine to do the gathering for me.
      secret: most of my sewing tools are found in free bins at yard sales or gotten on sale at charity shops. I don't go out in public very often, but when I do, I keep my eyes open. Although most of the tools needed quite a bit of work to clean the years off them.

    It turned out well!!! Isn’t it interesting that things don’t take as long as we think they will??
    I keep thinking I need to learn how to smock…..there have been some smocking books at my library’s book sale that I keep looking at….I should probably grab them next time.

      Library book sales are awesome. I was surprised how quickly the smocking went. I expect that part to take about a week, not an afternoon.

    Can I ask what kind of watersoluble ink you use in your fountain pen to mark the fabric and does it wash out well/leave no stains? I am currently using blue frixion pens to mark my fabric but their refills run out quite quickly and any reason to use a fountain pen is a good one 😄.

    • @CrowingHen
      @CrowingHen  Рік тому +3

      I used a light tan ink by pilot, called ina-ho. That way if it didn't wash out completely, It wouldn't leave much of a mark because it's nearly the same colour as the fabric. It was an accident when I discovered this ink washed out so well. (but as always, sample first as not all fabrics will react the same to it but a lot of fountain pen inks are water soluable)
      Alas, I'm not sure if they still make that colour anymore which is a shame because it's one of my favourites.

    • @sourcedancer7079
      @sourcedancer7079 Рік тому +2

      @@CrowingHen Thank you for your reply 💚. I did some searching and it does seem that pilot discontinued that ink about 1-2 years ago. It's a shame, but if there is one that washes out so well, there will be others. I will have to try some experimenting with the inks that I have😃.

    are you thinking of making aprons to sell? I would LOVE to have one, what I like about it besides the beauty is the apron covers the whole front, many times I get stains on the upper sides where regular aprons slope. I would love one your size. maybe the money could help your Victoria project.

    • @CrowingHen

      Maybe one day! But right now my health isn't up for it.
      It's actually based on aprons sold by someone on Salt Spring Island, so I would feel weird selling the same thing she makes.
      It is very nice to have a wrap-a-round apron. These ones that only cover the front are far too frugal to be useful for me.

      I've been trying to find out for a few years. They are the ones who made everyone else's aprons. They keep showing up at random events and markets on days, but never when I'm looking for them.
      That's why I had to make my own.

    I learnt to smock at school, which is unfortunate. The sewing teacher was a real bitch of a woman (two years off retirement at the time I was in her class). So I've never really taken to smocking.
    Back then you could buy iron-on smocking dots. They were closer together than the dots you drew, as they were intended for use on very fine fabric. (Or, faint wisps of memory coming back from a couple of geological ages ago, were there different gauges and we had to get the fine one for the school project?)

    A lovely project, as always and very good and clear non - tutorial ;-) i missed Donkey, though.
    And , if i may ask one small favour, please do not play music while you speak. I can not process both at the same time so i had to mute. And CC is a marvellous thing - if one can read and watch the video at the same time. I, again, can not. And I am not alone, I believe. Why noone else speaks up about this, I don´t know.
    We are not stupid. We just have a processing issue. Some people can not tap their head and rub their belly at the same time. We can not process musik and spoken words (or moving pictures and written words) at the same time. Please consider
    Thank you, and once more, thank you for the inspiration!

      Thank you for your comment. It's difficult to find a balance.
      Some months I earn enough to pay for someone to do the captions and I think that helps a lot more than the auto-caption system.
      There's a feature coming to youtube in the next year or so, where we can upload two audio tracks for the same video. When we get there. When we get that, I can have one track with music and one track with talking only. The viewer can choose which audio track they want to use. That might be the solution.

    • @Pinguinpullover
      @Pinguinpullover Рік тому +1

      @@CrowingHen Thank you for your answer. Two audio tracks would be great. Because it makes no difference who created the captions, i can not read and watch the film at the same time. my brain does not compute. it may be a rare condition but it´s real and rather annoying, just think of the captions as part of the picture, that a normal brain recognizes as words and processes as such. my brain takes them as part of the picture, background it you will, not as written words. When i read the captions, my brain blocks out the rest. weird, huh?
      Still, i very much appreciate your answer and your openness and that you are trying to help. Thank you.
