  • "Dance of the Dattan People" (Borodin / arranged by Satoshi Kobayashi) for ensemble of 11 clarinets.
    A. Borodin was one of the members of the Mighty Handful, a group of five 19th-century Russian composers. Interestingly, his primary profession was that of a scientist, with composition being more of a hobby for him. The opera "Prince Igor," which includes "Dance of the Dattan People," is based on the heroic tales of a real 12th-century figure, Prince Igor, depicted in "The Lay of Igor's Host." The music for the scene depicting the dance held for the captive Prince Igor was developed into "Dance of the Dattan People."
This arrangement is intended for performance by the "Iris Clarinet Ensemble." While the first half remains in the original key, the second half is transposed down a major second to better suit the characteristics of the clarinet and make it easier to perform.
