  • In this tutorial, Peter shows Meika working around the light changing the contrast and the power. And during this, he can simply and clearly explain the inverse square law of lighting.

I once heard photography described as "painting with light" and I think this is a pretty cool demonstration of that effect as you're making such drastic changes with each of your adjustments!

Awesome, thank you! The word Photography literally means 'drawing with light', which derives from the Greek photo, meaning light and graph, meaning to draw.

Peter this was a 2 for 1 video. First was watching you work your magic with Meika and light. Then there were the wide shots. The images on the walls and the rabbit head appeared to be an audience watching the session. You said you “never stop playing” and that fun, relaxed vibe comes through in the videos. Thanks!

Your comment about learning to a master a light was spot on. Every time I watch a video, there is something I learn or need to be reminded about. My work is very sloppy and that shows in the results.

Once more a great hands on tutorial, using one photo shoot to illustrate how small details in position of light and/or model have very subtle or big creative consequences on the final aspect of the portrait of that lovely model.
In theory the rules seem simple, but in their practical use they become a very complex mix and challenge to get to the optimal result.
I LOVE your Art Work, your teaching and your very natural, respectful and most empathic interaction with your models Peter.
    A fan from Belgium.

A series called Nébuleuse with the famous make up artist Damien Laturaze (big fan) who did also the make up for Emily in Paris (even bigger fan) in 2020.

Many thanks for this new backstage video.
@M: Many thanks for sharing and for posing in this video . I'm very happy to know that you're successful.
@P: Many thanks for demonstrating lighting when it comes from the side, that I think is my favorite one, because the silhouette, in vertical, is outlined a lot. I hope it’s not appropriate to say that my eyes are always tented to do vertical scanning. I (obviously) like a lot the cover image, and also the images at 2:02 and 2:10 with the eye like a drop of water.

Beautiful and awesome set altogether. My favs were at 7m 54s (side view but slight back arch, head tilt back and yet turned toward cam), 8m 18s (first one with arms above head and leaning a bit), 8m 20s (arms up but a more alluring look on her face), 9m 38s (kind of near deceptively cute) and then topped by 10m 11s (another arms up and slight lean but this one is with the more "wild" hair). Loved what you did with the lighting and how quickly you were able to do so--although I still find some of that difficult it is at least highly understandable when I see people aptly demonstrating as they go along.

Another great tutorial. Quick tip about the BW in green channel. Not sure if this works in C1 but in LR/ACR I experimented a bit. Started with the channel mixer in Photoshop (mono, 100%G, rest zero) and exported that as a LUT which I then based a new camera profile on. I THINK it is the same response in the RAW file but not sure since I have never used Phocus that much. Might be worth checking out though...

Hi Peter. Looking forward to attending your workshop in Sydney next year! I'm just trying to fit out my studio at the moment and wondering where you got your V flats from. I gather they are just thicker foam board but noticed they stand pretty well on their own unlike the thinner ones. Have you taped them together? I was considering just buying some cheap doors from bunnings, painting them and mounting on a roller frame but don't think they would be as versatile. Thanks!
