One of the most Beautiful Scores ever for a film. A score is supposed to tell the story in music. This one certainly does. Young people WON'T GET IT FOR ANOTHER 20 OR 25 YEARS. YOU HAVE TO HAVE EXPERIENCED LIFE TO UNDERSTAND THE MOODS AND MELODIES TO LIFE BEFORE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND ITS' MUSIC. IT'S ALL ABOUT LIVING, LOVING , LOSING AND GETTING OLDER. 💙
The gentle flow of daily life bring with it: our joys, stillness, loss, confusion, peace and throughout it all...the gift of music. In the end, a loving surrender and to know God is us and we are Him. In these ways, it is a circle of life and no matter how it appears - all, is well.
I started university as a mature student in my 40's. So terrified those early days. I made a "tape" of this theme song and played it non-stop as I drove to university each day, to try and calm myself down. It was very helpful. Will love it always.
Exquisite, indeed. We played this at my dad's funeral in 2010. We were blessed during his life to enjoy his dream that he made a reality -- our own golden pond.
Dave Grusin outdid himself on this magnificent score. It has the warmth, intimacy and rhapsodic quality of two lives that have been spent together (like the characters Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda played), as well as the longing and wonder of the beautiful environment at which the movie was shot.
The sounds of the Loons from across the lake, you can tell, are an essential part of this melody interwoven with the piano, brings about imagination, images of lakes sides, and the slow pace is of time itself.
This brings back memories of my childhood and the people I knew back then. . They are gone now but when I listen to this I feel like Im back in that time with them.
I feel that as well. This was one my dads favorite movies and every time I hear this piece it reminds me of him. I play it on the piano from time to time - although it makes me sad I can’t get enough of it. It’s so beautiful.
You probably dont give a shit but if you are bored like me during the covid times you can stream all of the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother for the last weeks =)
Yes - tears to my eyes - so beautiful - I am so thankful for this music and this movie - 1981!! What happened - how is it 2016? It seems like those times were so different - and they were. Such is the music of life
Angie Wilson I guess we grew old. I'm proud I remember a world which was already disappearing when I was young. But the lost summer in this music is poignant beyond words . Never mind...We survived...
Don't mourn the loss of those times. Cherish them but remember they'll come again. As a species, we inevitably repeat the same cycles. Times lost will come again. Perhaps not in the way we expect but they do eventually come again. In between, we are tested with trials and tribulations that we survive and overcome. :) After all, WW2 was horrifying but after it was over, it was hailed a 'Golden Age' by the survivors... and it was in a very real sense.
I'm only 18. I am so glad that my parents introduced this movie to me when I was younger. It has become a favorite of mine and my siblings. I especially love the score.
Karen Chen brought me to this. She skated to this gem and not only I, but u can tell all her fans were inspired by the music. OH,...she won the US Nationals off that short program she did in 2017. Just beautiful!!
As my parents are getting older I can no longer watch two other greatest films ever. They make me feel too sad. The films are On Golden Pond and Driving Miss Daisy.
Yes, it's hard to see your loved ones grow old, and I won't lie, growing old isn't a fun or joyful process for people. I work as a nursing assistant, so I see it all the time. But try to remember that it's the natural cycle of life and that they would rather have been able to grow old than to have had to have died prematurely. At least they're getting a chance to grow to a nice ripe old age. My parents didn't, and many other people don't.
Always tear up at the end when jane says goodbye ti her father and calls him dad for the first time in years...knowing their relation was the same in real life makes it even more heartbreaking
Does anyone know where I can get the actual performance used in the opening of the film? Surely they must have a recording of that specific performance actually used in the film?
Beautiful piece of music, enhanced by Gods creatures! I’m a Guy and this makes me weep, taking me on holiday with my mum and Dad once again in my mind!
Mr Grusin, you have truly touched the depth's of my soul with your beautiful effort that sets any manly pride aside and replaces it with tears that flow shamelessly down both cheeks.I give to you my heart felt thanks for reminding me that in these times there is still love
one of the best soundtracks from a man i have heard all my adult live from Tootsie and St Elsewhere but most touchingly when Rachel Cory read the letter her husband ( Mac Cory ) left her before he pasted in the soap opera Another World
Reminds me of my beloved Dad who passed away 2 years ago. I am now estranged from my whole family. I’m leaving the state down to beautiful Charleston SC after many years in New England. My father is with me always.
This was a movie my mother introduced me to. Such a warm story of empathy, compassion & forgiveness. Learning that our parents try their best & that it's never too late to go back home.🏡

You expressed beautifully how we all feel. So true
You are absolutely correct! AMazing score to listen to and identify with now as we age. it is NOW our story , in music

It's great when you have a piece of music that just works for you. I have an oldGeorge Benson album that always sorts me out when I need it xx
Why were you so terrified? And how did it work out?
Beautiful song! Never tire from listening to it. There's much more meaning to the movie for me now at 75yo than back in 1981

One of the most exquisitely beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. The opening scene of the film captured it perfectly.
It's amazing, love the theme from St.Elsewhere too. Have you ever watched the film Legend of 1900? if not, highly recommend.

Apart from being a real fan of Dave Grusin, I have always found this tune (On Golden Pond Theme) to be absolutely stunning and so very moving.
You are right.
It really is...
Indeed.

The official soundtrack for New Hampshire and Maine , and summer on the lake. PERFECTION
Karen Chen brought me to this. She skated to this gem and not only I, but u can tell all her fans were inspired by the music. OH,...she won the US Nationals off that short program she did in 2017. Just beautiful!!
I don't know why but this melody always brings a tear to my eyes
You're not alone.
Not only tears to my eyes....a knot in my throat!
Me too. Heard it at olympics skating competition and the entire movie flashed before my eyes
When you get upset, angry, uptight, this is your medicine. Relax into the beauty and you will feel almost magically better.
Thank you for saying that!!! I'm in tears sitting here listening. But also looking to move back to new england and reminds me of my mother.
It has been over 30 years and this still makes me goosebumps.
The Petersburg Symphony Orchestra is performing this piece at Virginia State University in April 2023. A favorite of mine!

Thank you Dave for sharing your skilled talent with us. It is much appreciated!
Man, this is so pretty; been listening to this since college from the 80s...peaceful.
Was there ever a better evocation of the peace and serenity of a new summer morn? What a gift this is.
One of Dave Grusin's sweetest tunes...and he's written a lot of them.
All time favorite film, hands down. The music is sublime; I have the soundtrack with the dialogue from the film on vinyl and it's also wonderful.
Tina Pfeiffer I also like the music from Terms of Endearment.
You're my knight in shining armor...
Everyone should have one
