    This is also super accurate, I’ve done both d1 college and the European route, both were good for me but both also had its own drawbacks. That being said, being in Europe was almost a totally different animal. It’s regarded differently to coaches and even if it’s a low division, Europe is taken more seriously. But take that with a grain of salt. I enjoyed both situations.

      R TM I’ve personally played most recently in the Baltic’s with first and second division teams. Even there it’s really difficult to go pro. That being said it’s also really hard to play D1 college soccer. But even lower divisions like in Germany and whatnot are competitive,

    The UPSL is huge for younger guys. To continue playing competitive after HS 5-10 years ago you HAD to go to college.
    My club team had 6-7 guys who didn’t want to go to school but accepting half ride scholarships to schools was the best thing to keep playing a competitive game.
    Now the UPSL is growing. Kids can work and continue to play or go to community college and not get too far into debt just to continue to play.
    The UPSL is cool. I hope to see that league grow

    Hey Matt for the continuous Q&A: have you spent a lot of time mastering the mental side of your game? Did you ever have problems with the mental side of the game in terms of confidence, consistency, or just enjoyment with the higher level you go?

      the first thing you should have is enjoyment and fulfilment when playing. Once you have that down, everything will come naturally, just make sure that you enjoy playing first. The higher you go, the more difficult it becomes no doubt. However, if you enjoy it every aspect of the game, you will unconciously become better.

      That's an interesting question. It's something that doesn't receive anywhere near enough attention. I remember joining the academy set-up at Sheffield United in England. I actually played in the same youth side as the current captain. I found there was quite a culture of bullying and hazing even as a young teenager - 13/14 and to be honest some of the coaches really damaged my confidence. I remember one of my coaches saying to me 'You came in here as a 10/10, now you're a 3/10.' At the time that really destroyed my confidence and my love for the game. It's only now that I'm a teacher myself that I realise the level of stupidity of that particular coach. If a student comes into my class on a grade A and he drops to a grade D, what does that say about me as a teacher? I saw a few of my team-mates go on to have pro careers and to be honest, I think virtually all of them had confidence issues that came from being judged, critiqued and hazed too harshly at a young age. I wonder how many of them might have had even better careers had they been able to play with full-confidence. It's such a fine-line between people understanding that they need to up their game to a new level and having their confidence damaged.

    Well said. There's a huge gap between pro level in Europa and US high school. It's even bigger than the gap between being a pro club academy player in Europa. The step from European academy team to the pro team is big. You need a lot of skills and luck because there are many guy out there chasing this few pro spots... If you aren't already training in their youth teams at the age of 14/15 you are probably not that interesting to pro clubs anymore because you missed to many opportunities of high level competition to prove yourself in the battle... I've seen this happening to many great youth players here in Germany with my own eyes...

Right now I am 23. I train, go to the gym and study everyday. Its all about time management. On weekends I chill and study or play a match it depends. So I am studying because I need a backup plan as well and I believe anything can be done if you have the right intentions and if you're working hard. 👍🏻

    I played up to reserves for an EPL team then came back to the US for the youth national team and stayed for college. College route is way more difficult because you have less time to train, and the quality of coaching just isn't there. When I was 16, I was on par with the internationals for the u18 teams in Europe, my teammates were all called up to their respective countries as was I for the US. I didn't get an ounce better mentally/tactically in college, I still progressed physically and skill wise but after graduation I denied attending the combine and entered the workforce. In Europe i would train with the reserves and be around the first team, in college we were the first team, we had no one to model ourselves after. We all peaked; some went to the MLS, but college killed our development... We even had a Herman Trophy finalist deny the MLS, it just wasn't worth it. If you get the opportunity, go to Europe and never look back, but be ready to deal with major depression and home sickness, i was desperate to come home.

    I'm amazed that people think they can come to Europe at 17 or 18 to become a pro. Most of the players over here have been in elite academy set-ups from before their teens. I had a trial with the Nottingham Forest academy aged 12 and got signed by the Sheffield United academy aged 14 and I was considered a late-comer. The academy system will expose players to a higher level of competition at a younger age than you would get in the US. It's hard to come over at 18 and catch up with 6 or 7 years of the kind of work that is going on in the pro academies here. I've definitely seen some player do it, but it's rare. A lot of the decent American and Canadian players I played with had quite an 'immature' game in comparison to European players - they were talented but I think the lack of elite competition and coaching made them think they were better than they actually were. Then they got England and found the level was a lot higher so they would have to adapt their game rapidly or be unable to compete - or in some cases, they just didn't have the technical level - the touch, the feel for the ball, the striking consistency. American players hardly ever lack work-rate and are usually some of the best conditioned athletes but my impression was that mentally they weren't developed enough. A European player is doing a lot more work in their head, body position, head swivelling to see team-mates, fast reactions, technique etc. I really think that if US players would develop more technically at a young age, the talent pool and sports culture in the US is enough to create a powerful football team.

    Is taking a gap year the best choice for those players that don't have college offers and didn't have a great senior year, soccer wise. Or should they go to to college and try out as a walk-on. I personally am taking a year off and working to save up for school and working to get better at soccer.

    Hey Matt, I’m in a difficult situation right now. I have a connection in Europe and my family can financially afford the expenses, but I feel like I’m not at that level of play. When I contacted my connection over in Europe, they said I should go over there and develop there with their academies for an year then try to go pro rather than taking the college route for development because I’m already 17 and cannot afford to lose another 4 years. Please suggest something. Would be really helpful.

      Kyle Santangelo hi kyle...I use to coach Men n women tennis at Wagner College...I love soccer/football by way. U as the student can contact the coach or school at any time when ur in high school. But the coach has limited amount depending ur year in school. You should write an email to the coach and tell him about yourself and your intentions and interest in the school. Maybe send a video. Update that video every year if you’re really interested in that school. Keep your grade up cause that’s one of the basis for scholarships. Good luck!

    College is to gain more exposure. But, if you really want to be seen, you have to go to the Pro tryouts. Don't wait for them to come knocking on your door, if you only play soccer. You gotta go knock on their door. Then, you gotta dethrone someone they already had eyes on.

    Matt, I got cut from the high school team this year. I joined a different sport entirely to try and gain strength, speed, endurance, etc. I don’t have the time to play for a club atm as I’m taking difficult classes in high school. What do you recommend for me to do on the weekdays and weekends so I can still improve my skills on the ball. How do I try to fit that in.

    • @mrepix8287
      @mrepix8287 4 роки тому

      Lol imagine getting cut from high school and preceding to stop playing soccer altogether in order to “improve”. You need to play club in order to get anywhere in soccer; and if you truly cared about your development in the sport, you make it work with your school schedule.

    • @jovanichaparro7259
      @jovanichaparro7259 4 роки тому

      You need to make it work with high school. Wake up earlier or stay later to train and train harder. Play the sport, either in pick ups, 7v7 teams or with friends. If you got cut, then you got cut for a reason. Look at the players that play your position, you need to put work them and be better but don’t stop playing the sport

      Tommy Eris hey blockhead, I didn’t say that I ‘quit’ for another sport. I merely said I joined it for the year at my school because they do a lot of running and weightlifting which will help my physical aspect of the game. I appreciate the advice, but before you try to give some ‘constructive’ criticism, get a grasp of the message first. Think if it’s an appropriate response to what the question is. Nevertheless, thanks
