    Personalizing your guitar to where you've discovered it responds to your dynamics is gratifying in so many ways.
    The guitar becomes more like a part of you.
    Hard to explain, but it is very much like the guitar is an old friend. 😎👍❤
    Thanks again for sharing with us.

    I set my guitars the same in every way you described. Except my Epiphone Casino, I have the string height very high so it sounds really clear when played acoustically. It sound great amplified as well. Really low pups allow for better sustain as the magnets do not effect the strings so much, so they can vibrate longer.

    Well that was really very interesting. Basically your preferred setup is the condition everyone else's guitar is in when they bring it to a luthier to be "fixed" :) Love how personalized and unique your setup is. But that would drive me crazy (other than the trem). Thanks for another very interesting and entertaining video.

  • @cgavin1
    @cgavin1 6 років тому +2

    Hey. Exactly the same setup for me too. Except I 'embrace the fret out' and have the D and G lower than all the other strings. This plays super smooth up to the 12th fret where it gets plinky. I have found that if I just relax my attack and come over the G, D, E for bends I can get a good strangled cat tone lol. Up past 14th fret is 'waste of time'. I settled on this after years off fighting high action on vintage radius boards and after realizing the number of notes I play past the 12th fret is bugger all in the scope of things! If I could be bothered I'd flatten out the frets higher up the board but to be fair they get that way after being played in anyway ..

    Greetings from Liverpool. I have an Ibanez JS with a floating term, absolute hell on earth so I blocked it now it’s great. Working on my tomman strat kit, my daughter is a very good artist so she’s going to paint a design after I’ve Donne the base coat. Sort of “Hendrix stays up all night painting his guitar”type thing
    Take care and keep on rockin

    On most of my Strats I set the low E side of the single coils to spec but on the high E side I set them a tiny bit lower than spec. They are noticeably clearer sounding 👍

    I like the strings on my Telecaster '72 Deluxe the same way, through B to B. I'm tuned Drop BEADGB, you see. I have the neck nearly straight with a slight [noticeable by eye if looked say, from down the nut] concave/relief. If I had the neck at a Convex I'd be getting way too much string buzz with the gauge strings I use, 62, 52, 42, 30w, 17 13, & I like the action to be as low as possible albeit with an upward angle like you mentioned. I've had a few mates whom play guitar say my setup is all weird, but it's user friendly for me, intonation is spot on, all is lovely. :)

  • @calumobrien9234
    @calumobrien9234 8 років тому

    Gonna say, when it comes to tremolos, I have a Bigsby on my SG, but I stick a couple of extra washers under the spring and an extra washer above the spring because then it lifts it up and you effectively get similar range to a Strat, but whilst having the advantage of being able to pull up on the tremolo as well, and because it's a much stiffer tremolo, it doesn't go out of tune when you bend a string, so it's best of both worlds really. I actually have locking tuners on mine as well so it doesn't usually go out of tune unless I'm properly going for it. I know this is a bit of a long paragraph, but I thought I'd mention it.

    Hi Dave,
    It's always worth paying attention to the ways guitarist you admire set up their instrument.
    What got you started raising the G B and E strings?
    I would have loved to see how you have the saddles are set to compensate for the extra stretch in that high E.
    Have you ever had a guitar that you liked but didn't love - until you raised or lowered the tuning half a step?
    Great Videos - keep up the great work.

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  8 років тому

      In all honesty i don't remember to well as i've been doing it for such a long time.
      I think i started doing it because i play with the flats of my fingers a lot and not the tips and having the strings higher makes it easier to bend and to grab hold of.
      I would love to try a scalloped neck but not living near any guitar shop thats not going to happen anytime soon. :(
      I have indeed but i love the guitar regardless. :)
      I have a Strat from the 80s that sounds great in standard tuning but if you lower it a full step and the whole guitar seems to come alive. Sounds so cool. :)
      Thank you so very much and i shall always do my best. :)

    Hi again Dave , have you tried flat wound /jazz strings in your Strat ? I have just junk the low E for the A and move them all up , or is it down...depending on the string gauge you end up with a set of 9,42's ...I just use a regular hi E , great fun...and very expensive if you snap a flat wound string...ooops

    Hi again Dave,
    You say you try to make all guitars as close as your strat (which is wonderful I must say) but that brings up a dilema I've been debating for some time: We all have a guitar or a type of guitar that we prefer in terms of sound / playability / feeling but doesnt this limit the sonic possibilities for us? maybe a discussion video on comfort zone in terms of guitars and even playing?
    just throwing around suggestions,
    keep up the awesome work :)

    How does anyone not have relief in their necks? Guitar strings vibrate and need that relief in order to not bounce off the frets and cause buzz. Otherwise, you'd need super high action to combat the buzz.

    3:35 Is the 'nought' end the headstock? You British blokes and your faulty English - hmm, oh wait a minute, you invented English ... my mistake , carry on! Haha , just fooling around ... cool videos! I've recently become attracted to the idea of a white-ish Strat (specifically a 'Deluxe Roadhouse Stratocaster - Sonic Blue' with this interesting 6 position rotary knob instead of the middle tone knob turned on by a pre-amp button inside the main volume knob! .. ok maybe a bit off-white blueish with a white sparkly pickguard area). Interesting that you mention a slight curve to the necks. I find that perhaps some people are too obsessive about trying to get their necks perfectly flat. I tend to use 10-46 strings (rotosounds) on my electrics and with high action (great for bending and even doing vibrato at the top of bends ... action too low makes strings want to slip under my fingers on bends ... I think sometimes people are obsessive about getting low action but if they truly like that for fast shredding on thinner strings then more power to them - but if poeple just assme low action is the most proper thing, then maybe they are just going along with what they've heard). I remember bringing my blue flame/quilt-top Godin SDxt into a shop during a time of low funds to try to sell it and upon looking at it the guy just blurted ... "this action is shit" ~ oh well, I'm so glad I didn't sell it and I still have it and his opinion was crap as far as I'm concerned! Anyway, keep on making the interesting vids!

    How do you get that high kind of action on your strat with the saddles that low? Is it all in the relief?

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  6 років тому

    What's the heaviest strings you've experimented with? Stevie used 13s but they kill my fingers!

    • @nickfanzo
      @nickfanzo 8 років тому +1

      13s are just silly. no reason to hurt yourself and it's not that big of a difference sonically.

    • @nickfanzo

      +Behind the times Conservative (Democrat) I used 13s for years and then started having pains in my fingers.
      im down to 10s now and dont hear a damn difference. its all ago.

    Hey, do you want to do some writing? I have a few songs, and I'm curious as to what you'd do with the song. I can send you a song and you can listen to see if it's something you're up for.

    Does anyone really play with a neck flat? they are supposed to have releif to allow the string to vibrate properly, the most displacement of a vibrsting string is at it's center.
    Can you explain why you like to set ypur pickups so low?

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  7 років тому +2

      I have my pickups super low because I want them as clean sounding as possible. :)

    • @Petersorg
      @Petersorg 7 років тому +1

      There are people that prefer flat necks, usually sredders, but there are exceptions. BB King was known for prefering flat instead of the slightly bowed neck. People who play with a light touch can afford to have flat necks.
