“Does each character have a theme like this?”
Ahh and so it begins, the Guilty Gear arc.
I don't know if you want to go down this rabbit hole but the Guilty Gear Strive OST is wild. Its mostly a metal album but its inspirations seem to touch on everything from Fall Out Boy to Chili Peppers to Megadeth and a bunch of other stuff too. There's a song called Symphony that literally does a bossa nova bridge and then reprises the part at the end with a ragtime piano all while singing the melody to Pink Floyd's The Wall. Its just...wild. I really do think you'd enjoy it.
+1 to this, the songs have so much thought put into them and are incredibly complex. It's music that not only uses lyrics, but even the instrument choices/changes and the arrangement of the song itself to tell a story. You have songs that specifically use a certain kind of music or instrument that is not present in the character's past tracks to highlight a difference or change in their mentality. Truly Incredible.
He did Extras and Mirror of the World on another stream a couple days after this one (which is up on the VOD channel already May 19th stream) and said that he's thinking about doing a full OST listen for Strive. FYI he also did Smell of the Game last year (it is on the VOD channel in the March 15th 2023 stream).
@@Segmented I'd love to see him check out the beautiful mess that is Drift
Never thought I'd see Geebz reviewing Guilty Gear music lol
Now I need to see him react to The Gravity, Mirror of the World, and Armored Clad of Faith. I can die a happy death if this were to occur.
The creator of Guilty Gear, Daisuke Ishiwatari, is not only the story writer, but also the composer, the lyricist, the character designer, and also I believe a programmer in the older installments but I think he may have stepped down from that particular role. He's a HUGE nerd for all kinds of Western music, not just limited to North American either. Tons of characters are named after or designed to be inspired by artists and bands. There's Axl Low who is designed and named after Axl Rose, theres Ky Kiske whose name is a combination of Michael Kiske and Kai Hansen, theres Testament, named after the band Testament, and the biggest reference of all aka the main character Sol Badguy, whose real name is Fredrick Bulsara, a reference to Freddie Mercury's real name. In fact Sol is canonically a Queen superfan, and one of his most prized possessions is his copy of a Queen album. One of my favorite musical references in the series is Potemkin, who is from a country called Zepp (after Led Zeppelin), and his battle theme in Guilty Gear XX contains a motif that references the intro to Kashmir. In Strive there's also a track called The Circle, the theme of a character called Bedman? (yes spelled with a question mark), that has HUGE inspirations from a song by Sheena Ringo, a Japanese artist. The song is called 葬列
(Funeral in English). My friend actually pointed this reference out to me when he went to listen to the album that song is from and it blew my mind. Sheena Ringo is also the inspiration behind the design of another character in the game called I-No. I could go on forever about these references but surely you get the point lol.
Ramlethal is an artificial being called a Valentine, created by a being called The Universal Will for their world ending plot. Ram was initially a villain but she awakened to the emotions she didn't think she had, thanks to intervention by several of the main characters including Sin Kiske and Sol Badguy. She's still in the process of learning about her emotions but she's pretty unambiguously a good guy now and her and Sins story arcs feel like the crystalization of all of Guilty Gears story themes it's really sick.
All of Guilty Gear Strives character are of this same quality and with a surprising variance in genre. Some songs in the OST are even kinda hard to assign a genre to at all lol. I don't know where I'd begin with trying to recommend more lol, but you can't go wrong with any of them. I think my favorite rn is Symphony, which is the theme of a character named A.B.A
Edit: I can't believe I forgot to mention the singers. Naoki Hashimoto is the male singer on this song and he's been a mainstay of the series since Vastedge. AISHA is the female singer and she sings all of the female vocals in the OST with the exception of the song Extras which is by Molly Daisy. Jamison Boaz also provides background vocals and some other stuff in several Strive songs like Love The Subhuman Self.
I do believe Daisuke-san did indeed program the first Guilty Gear on PlayStation (PSX/PS1)
The Guilty Gear Strive soundtrack has so much juice, and unexpected variety, that it's always a pleasure to watch people discover it.
Awesome seeing Geebz checking out Guilty Gear. The series creator is a huge music fan and it bleeds into everything from the characters' names to their moves to the soundtrack. You can really feel Daisuke's love of music in all the stylistic references in the soundtrack.
Daisuke puts music references both in the game, and in the music he writes.
I hope to see more Guilty Gear reactions.
Everyone has been naming the prog-related artists Necessary Discrepancy reminded them of, but the one I'm surprised to see wasn't mentioned was Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Particularly given that the opening section of Necessary Discrepancy is 100% a direct homage to ELP's song Bitches Crystal, all the way down to the vocal melody. Play the openings of both songs one after another, and it's clear to see.
For such an overt homage, it's a fairly deep cut to choose for a song. It was on ELP's 1971 "Tarkus" album, and normally people only care about the behemoth that was the title track there. If nothing else it shows Daisuke Ishiwatari knows his prog history well, and that's cool to see.
It's such an overlooked track on the OST, and I wished the broader audience would listen to more than the first minute and a half to get to the massive soaring chorus and complex Dream Theater-esque moments. It's by far my favorite song in the game.
Yes, it's one of my favorites, and one of the most musically well-constructed as well.
If you like the prog aspect of this song, I recommend The Gravity for another, if not better, creative and innovative prog anthem
This is his first Guilty Gear song right? Hope he goes for more. Not all are the same, this one is probably the most proggy of all of them, but they're almost all fantastic. Drift is a trip, Hellfire is a straightforward but awesome song as well
It is not. The first was Smell of the Game. It is on the VOD channel on the March 15 2023 stream video.
Pleaseee do more of Guilty Gear Strive character themes, it's so worth it
Oh hell yeah! I just stumbled across your page today bc I’m a huuuuge fan of Guilty Gear Strive’s soundtrack. Each character has so much passion and technical mastery put into their respective theme it’s unreal! Some other awesome songs to check out are Symphony (A.B.A.’s theme), Mirror of the World (Baiken’s theme), or even Drift (Happy Chaos’ theme).
This, and the following day's stream (Where he checked out 2 others GG songs) convinced me that we need a deep dive stream for GG music.
i recommend going through both albums in order. fitting that the name of the soundtrack is "Necessary Discrepancy Vol 1/2"
If you want to listen to another Guilty Gear song check out "Sky Should be High".
It's such a good rock song and probably one of the more popular songs from the entire franchise.
Guilty Gear as a whole just has phenomenal music.
Please listen to the rest of this soundtrack!!!!
My favs are probably "Circle", "Rock Parade", and "Crawl" !!!!!!!
Drift from this OST is absolutely insane. Love the Subhuman Self and Symphony are two other tracks I really like.
This is incredible. Thank you uncle Geebz.
Yooo, I wasn’t expecting Guilty Gear from you! I love these tracks, this one’s great.
Hell of a pick for the first one for him to listen to, it will baffle me to no end how people underrate this song. it's one of my favorites and one of the best character journeys through song in the ost. The whole album is named after it for good reason.
Hopefully he gets to hear some more, you'd go nuts trying to point point all the musicale influences in the ost
I love y’all are on my Game’s soundtrack. Potemkin main and this is a GOATED channel ❤️🔥🫡
6/8 into 5/4 always feels funky lmaoooo
Thank you Geebz
Nice! more anime & games ost reactions 🥳
It has a Devin Townsend soul. I love it 🥰
always excited to see someone new get into guilty gear music! if you ever plan on trying some new songs of theirs from this game series, I would like to recommend:
Symphony (A.B.A's theme)
Mirror of the World (Baiken's theme)
Drift (Happy Chaos's theme)
Crawl (Nagoriyuki's theme)
Let Me Carve Your Way (Zato's theme)
Heavy Day (from xrd)
The Gravity (Asuka's theme)
these ones I recommend, but all of them are great.
The time signature goes between 5/8, 6/8, and then 4/4 for the chorus.
would love to see more guilty gear!
Please go down the guilty gear strive rabbit hole! Crazy variety and impressive compositions.
This song makes me cry. It's just so full of passion.
I'd love to see you react to The Gravity, Drift, and Just Lean.
Some of the characters are references to classic metal artists. Like Axl Rose and Michael Kiske(From Helloween).
you are in for a treat with guilty gear tracks
One of my favs tracks from Daisuke.
Dang, the singer is reminding me of Trivium lol, this OST rocks, should really play Guilty Gear at some point 😅
The Guilty Gear franchise can be described as a series of albums with games attached.
Guilty Gear as a franchise is just a massive tribute to Rock and Metal and this goes from the character names to the OST.
I got excited you were gonna do some Ween I saw the Quebec album art!
Same!
I don't know if Necessary Discrepancy is the *best* Guilty Gear Strive song (there's more than a few contenders for that title), but I'd wager it's probably the most iconic. Hell, Daisuke Ishiwatari himself (the game's lead designer and composer) apparently considered it to be the game's anthem, so he clearly places a lot of faith in it as well.
6:35 yes, each character has lyrics and a song according to its lore or personality, specially on Strive (the latest game) and most if not all songs are bangers
Symphony, Circle, Drift, Mirror, Extras and a ton of other awesome character themes. Guilty Gear osts are always busted
More Guilty Gear, YEEEEAH!
Hey brother! You should check out Neurogenesis - Intervals
It’s a great track, I think you’ll like it.
Daisuke Ishiwatari not only wrote the soundtrack, he also created/developed the game itself and is a voice actor for many of the characters. Ridiculously talented guy. Pretty much every soundtrack for every game in this series is killer. Games are fun as crap too.
Whoa whoa whoa, we just gonna skip over the Ween song? ;) Need that video
The heavier parts sounds a like Dream Theater and Devin Townsend hybrid. Not that it's metal but my favorite soundtrack is from an old game called Xenogears.
01:33 Let's just say it is not exacly Asuka level of character
The music is quite good in the entirety of the Guilty Gear franchise. A common joke you'll hear is something along the lines of "Hey, I bought this awesome Metal album and I got a free video game with it!"
Can you please react to Ween?!?!
While I'm a bit out of the norm, not being a huge fan of this soundtrack, I do think Necessary Discrepancy is fantastic! I might be a bit biased though, this is the character theme for my main...
Love music but, sorry, Guilty gear? heard it all before.
GG Strive, the low tier ost of the franchise, If he liked it he will love the rest of the games. Blazblue too
I've listened to all the guilty gear OSTs and they are all fantastic. But please explain to me why you think Strive is the low point in the franchise. I legit cannot see it at all with how much creativity and passion is in these songs.
@@bustinmayo6595hes one of those hate the newest installation of the series no matter what people
