  • Alan Watts tells the story of the Chinese farmer whose horse ran away. That evening, all of his neighbors came around to commiserate. They said, “We are so sorry to hear your horse has run away. This is most unfortunate.” The farmer said, “Maybe.” The next day the horse came back bringing seven wild horses with it, and in the evening everybody came back and said, “Oh, isn’t that lucky. What a great turn of events. You now have eight horses!” The farmer again said, “Maybe.”
According to Watts, the whole process of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity, and it’s really impossible to tell whether anything that happens in it is good or bad - because you never know what will be the consequence of the misfortune; or, you never know what will be the consequences of good fortune.

“Perhaps the foremost interpreter of Eastern disciplines for the contemporary West, Alan Watts had the rare gift of ‘writing beautifully the un-writable’. I wish everyone in the world could digest Alan and all his work. If so, what a different world the west would be...

Thank you for your like 👍😉🤠. I have decided not to get the lung cancer biopsy yesterday because I am old, poor and have no friends or family members left & I'm homeless now in a group house 🏘️ and I remember what my momma said to me.. before she died. "Freddy, to keep holding on to a life that really isn't good anymore and be unhappy and in pain isn't worth it but, let it go

One makes a best guess, in light of the way they want things to be. They wouldn't miss the motive to put on a jacket if they were cold, and the ramifications aren't 50/50 that they will get colder doing so.

Certainty of correctness of our belief is what troubles us. We think we know what is right and what is wrong. Sorry, we can't know. That is perhaps what humbleness is.
If I am sure that what happened was wrong I am mathematically destined to feel distress.
Who knows what is right and what is wrong? Who can predict anything.
