I have a piece of rubber hose in my tool box for installing spark plugs, no dropping and no cross threading with a rubber hose . Torque wrench for the new guys. I have used a very short ratchet for install for all my 50 years of doing it. I learned all that from my dad when we were building VW bug engines in my early teens.
As a diyer especially with aluminum heads I never use an impact always by hand so I can have a better feel for it and when I install the new ones I torque with an inch pound torque wrench especially when working on someone else's stuff
Wow, Kenny you are the man. Others would turn this into a 4 figure repair bill. You find the actual issue instead of abusing clientele. I bet you have some very loyal customers! Thanks for sharing.
Years ago, I had a 2000 Silverado that kept getting a "#4 misfire" code. The usual indication would be weak acceleration upon entering the interstate (hard acceleration) which was immediately followed up with a check engine light. Multiple trips to different shop and many parts replacements failed to resolve the problem. It was not consistent but occurred regularly. I finally gave up and traded in what was a usually reliable truck.
Did one on a Nissan that was a flat- gasket plugs. The gasket base part was corroded firmly in the hole, but all of the other plugs while very hard to break loose from the base, the threads turned fairly easy. I put a cigarette filter in the hole, held in place by the outer electrode, to catch most of the shavings and drilled the base with the flat gasket. Once i got through the head, or base, and it was primarily just the threaded part all the torque pressure was off. I then used an easy out and it came loose fairly easy. I cut and drilled one of the other plugs to use for a test and to see how far i had to drill before the base should come off from the thread.
Cadillac dealership did it to my ATS when it had free oil changes. First oil change I did after, I had to use a breaker bar to loosen the plug. Luckily it wasn't stripped. Takes a cartridge type oil filter. Cap on that was super tight too. I guess oil changers everywhere are under pressure to get them done quick, so use power tools to do it, some haven't figured out how to use the adjuster to lessen drive torque.
Only time I will use an impact on spark plugs is when removing them getting replaced.I have a 3/8 stubby Nepros ratchet that I snug them down with by hand installing the spark plug
You were right the first time...how the h&ll am I going to get that out?? Unbelievable what I have been through with never changed and over tightened spark plugs...
I think you (and the customer) are very lucky the rest of the plug came out in one piece and relatively easy. Shops that use impact for sparkplugs should close IMO. Good luck with determining what causes the misfire.
Guys look at me funny, but I'll look up the torque spec on plugs and use a torque wrench. If the plug gets stuck and breaks when it comes out 5 years down the road, it won't be my fault.
I think the ford broken spark plug tool will work. The 3.6 can also have the tic go silent after the roller goes out that cylinder will have a felt miss and occasional misfire
I've seen guys spin out spark plugs with air ratchets. You'll never see me doing that. The only air power i use is the blow gun. To clean everything up.
These engines have misfire issues specifically on cylinder 2 pertaining to valve seats. My humble opinion is that this was the original problem, and someone wanted to try a new spark plug.
I had a 54 Ford I want to see it. It was like a 2950 did that happen? And I actually use the flat bladed screwdriver. Just kind of tapped a little bit spun right out.
Maybe someone used a spark plug socket with no rubber insert in it and broke that plug. I wonder if doing a leakdown test on the fuel injectors would reveal anything.
Funny. There’s other more popular “mechanics” on UA-cam that start plugs by hand and run them down with an impact ratchet. Some of those “mechanics” may or may not be down south in one of those states that start with an F and end in an A, but I’m not saying any names 😜
I don't see how you got the easy out in there with the electrode in the way... Nice to see the taper was not on there because I don't think you'd ever got it out..😮
If I were a customer of that shop (1 I would report the shop to the BBB (2 I would make a negative post on Facebook or Yelp. One of two things will happen (1 the technician will be reprimanded by the CSA/Store Manager (2 To CSA/Store Manager will fire the technician (3 they will do nothing and eventually lose enough customers that they will close their doors. Negative press for that shop on social media not only loses that customer effects future customers because if they see that negative post if that customer had that problem we’re not going to use them when enough future customers do that and lose enough customers whether it be Facebook or Yelp that they are not making a profit and they can’t stay in business they close their doors or business. 🙂
Do a leak down test on cylinder 2, the valve seats go bad on these motors and it’s always cylinder 2 95% of the time, could also be a bad rocker/ cam lobe on that cylinder
Just my Personal Opinion but Electron or Air Wrenches should not be used to Tighten Plugs. I like Rainman Ray as a Mechanic and he uses Electron Wrenches but he does it almost everyday and has a Feel for just the correct Tightness...
And this is why real mechanics exist - not only the right tool for the job (which you may need once a year if that) but the skill to use it.
Very lucky getting that broken plug out. That could of been a massive repair effort
Someone went bananas on the spark plug. Lucky you it came out so easily!
A few years ago I watched someone install spark plugs with an impact wrench it still gives me shudders even now

After a miracle of getting a broken plug out I used never- seize and about 10 pounds of torque.
Love watching you diagnose the different issues. We need more mechanics like you. Thank you for what you do. God bless you and your family.
Hey Kenny , anxiously awaiting the next video on this vehicle ! Thanks……
Nice work getting that spark plug out !
As a diyer especially with aluminum heads I never use an impact always by hand so I can have a better feel for it and when I install the new ones I torque with an inch pound torque wrench especially when working on someone else's stuff
Same here totally. I'm very very careful with aluminum heads. I've seen way too many messed up ones.
Wow Impressive repair

I watched someone taking plugs out with an impact, not even putting them in.. And that gave me a very bad feeling.

It's atrocious that some of the quick oil change places ridiculously tighten the oil drain plug.

Enjoy your channel. I have 3 favorites now 😊
What you said peviously about the idling scare theories needed to be said! Thanks.
Good day Mr Kenny 🤠 Hope y'all have a wonderful day. Oh tell Mrs Meg I said howdy, and thank you for the great videos.
Icons easy out kit is legit especially when you have to drill first.
Oh crap! I've never ran into that before 😮 WOW. Did actually break a plug taking it out, but it just broke at the insulator 😮.
I think you (and the customer) are very lucky the rest of the plug came out in one piece and relatively easy.

The first guy I worked for as a mechanic showed me how to use an impact on spark plugs and took out the threads in the customer's 1 year old car
This is the sort of thing that makes your stomach feel like a bottomless pit. Glad you got it out.
good going!
A good tip for putting in spark plugs, taking note coil and saves the down part with the rubber, put it in by hand and then start tightening
How do I send you a photo?
I think the ford broken spark plug tool will work. The 3.6 can also have the tic go silent after the roller goes out that cylinder will have a felt miss and occasional misfire

Nice job.
Good job!
When i saw the title, I thought you were going to be working on a Ford 5.4 Triton 😅.
Wow You lucked out on that one,go buy a lottery ticket!
It's amazing that someone would use a impact wrench on something with a ceramic insulator. Crazy to think an impact is a good idea.
Super lucky on that job!
Could have gone very badly too easily!
Replacing an injector without diagnosing it first? I’ve seen a lot of inconsistent misfires caused by a mechanical issue/ low compression.
Yeah 👍, you are right and with social media now days you are screwed. 🙂
What happened to the centre electrode?
Hope that didn't fall into the cylinder.
The crush washer from the broken plug might tell you if it was over tightend
I've seen guys spin out spark plugs with air ratchets. You'll never see me doing that. The only air power i use is the blow gun. To clean everything up.
Nice work which scanner is this ?
These engines have misfire issues specifically on cylinder 2 pertaining to valve seats. My humble opinion is that this was the original problem, and someone wanted to try a new spark plug.
Where did the center electrode go ?
Could have been a manufacturing defect in the plug too.
SCOREEEEEEEEEEEE and a lil bit of LUCK... aahhahahhaha fools in shops have no clue .... i snug and give a 1/4 turn maybe .. i use the FEEL...
Hi Kenny
Can you put a like out on the set of easy outs you used on the spark plug
Thanks
When someone brings a Jeep/Dodge and or Chrysler, run for your life
I had a 54 Ford I want to see it. It was like a 2950 did that happen? And I actually use the flat bladed screwdriver. Just kind of tapped a little bit spun right out.
The other guy messed up twice, he should have taken the crush washer off. You don't need one with the spark plug tube.
Kenny have you ever tryed cleaning the injector with brake cleaner or will it not work
Is one of the back plugs just waiting to break
What happened to the cracked porcelain insulator inside of the cylinder?
Going to be interesting, please make a second video of this if it's not to much trouble I mean 🎉😊
Maybe someone used a spark plug socket with no rubber insert in it and broke that plug. I wonder if doing a leakdown test on the fuel injectors would reveal anything.
Normal problem on the ford three valve heads .........you need a special tool set for them
Funny. There’s other more popular “mechanics” on UA-cam that start plugs by hand and run them down with an impact ratchet. Some of those “mechanics” may or may not be down south in one of those states that start with an F and end in an A, but I’m not saying any names 😜
Worn rocker roller will cause intermittent miss on 3.6
I don't see how you got the easy out in there with the electrode in the way... Nice to see the taper was not on there because I don't think you'd ever got it out..😮
I had the. Same question
If it is an injector issue should the o2 be showing lean?
I had a ford that did that under a load was the coil also had a vacuum leak on a different ford that only on a hard pull
Ignorant people do ignorant things
I've seen people take them OFF with an impact.. never to put on!!!!!
If I were a customer of that shop (1 I would report the shop to the BBB (2 I would make a negative post on Facebook or Yelp. I would not ever use that shop again. 🙂
A happy customer will tell a friend or 2 about a good shop. A unhappy customer will tell 10

Remember some losers love to be petty
Scotty Kilmer fans dislike this video😂🤣
Seems to me that you get all the crap work!!!!!!!!!
I’ve used an impact for 25 years and broke 2 out of hundreds of tune-ups
