Hey Grant, I've been working days and nights for about 10 years. Start by staying up later and later until you are able to stay up the same hours as your shift. I can usually do it in three days. Buy a box fan and and blackout shades for your room. The sun makes it difficult to sleep. I put the fan on middle speed so it provides a consistent ambient noise to mask any noise you may hear. Trust me you will need something. On my off days I try to wake up earlier on day one so I don't waist as much of the day. I stay up until 2am and go to bed. When I'm bored, I work out in the middle of the night, play video games or focus on personal goals. Congrats and I look forward to your journey -Billy

My shifts are 12 hours three nights per week, and from what I understand you are on that shift for a while but the length of time is purely dependent on the person and situation.
Thank you for sharing your experience during your Amazon hiring process. Amazon is one of the top companies globally and a hard company to get in because it is very competitive. I got an offer for the Area Manager position at Amazon last week, and I decided to take it. My offer letter states my total compensation, start date, and location, but it does not mention my work hour or the department I'm responsible for (Inbound, Outbound). I think I'm L4 because I was hired through a college program, but I'm not sure. I was searching online; however, my salary is more than what an L4 makes. What is the salary range for L5 and how do i find out if I'm L4 or L5?
Hi Migdalia, congratulations on receiving an offer, that is great! My offer letter did not state whether I was an L4 or L5, this is something I had asked in response to my offer letter. The relocation package I received was noted as being for L5/L6, so that was an indicator prior to receiving confirmation from the recruiter. In regards to the shift, I was told my shift a when I got information on Process Path Training, which is during your second week where you work as a member of the team you will be managing.
Hey, Grant! I have enjoyed watching your videos concerning the Area Manager position. I am a senior in college from Texas, and have been offered the position after my Spring graduation. Like many others, I am also a bit scared to make a decision due to the apparent high turnover and bad reviews online regarding the position. Another issue is that I got offered the position across the country and not in Texas like I’d hoped, and I’m just having difficulty deciding if I should join a very successful company and move across the country even though I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews online on the position. I understand that this would just be the beginning of my career and first post-undergrad experience, but I definitely wanted to keep thinking through the decision before I made up my mind. Is there any advice you could give me concerning my situation? I know I’m going to have to make a decision for myself, but I would love another perception and your input!
Just like Grant advised, ignore the reviews online and reach out to real people on LinkedIn or in your network. At the end of the day, understand and know that it's your decision to make and everyone's experience is unique to them. I have been working at Amazon as an Area manager now and it's been a very interesting experience. It has taught me a lot about myself and about people. Even though it hasn't been rosy all the way, It also hasn't been bad all the way. I've had some ups and downs and I have learned from it. Amazon is a great company to work for especially thinking about the times that we live in; the job is secure and there are lots of opportunities to do different things, try out different positions, live in different places, (You can always find your way back to Texas by transferring) and grow as an individual. They invest a lot in their people and that alone is very commendable. I hope this helps you.
HI Yamile - your concerns are totally valid and it is great that you are thinking through these things. Like you are saying, this decision is something you have to make for yourself, and when people approach me with these concerns I typically say that the "risk" with this is dependent on how comfortable you are investing in your future career by going through a wildcard like an AM role. By wildcard I just mean that there are quite a bit of unknowns that you won't uncover until after you accept the role, but that is also the fun of it. I believe that if you worked at Amazon and made the best of the experience that it would be a fantastic investment in your future at such a young age. If you were to decide that Amazon is not for you, nothing is permanent and you can go elsewhere. Just like Abimbola said below, it is such a huge company that you would probably be able to work your way back to Texas if needed at some point. One thing worth pointing out is to take a look at the response these videos have elicited and read through some of the comments. Take notice of how many people have the same concerns as you. If you worked as an AM, these people would be your peers and they would understand what you are going through and that is how you develop strong relationships. I wish you the best in making your decision!

Hi Deepa - I am glad you find my videos informative! When it comes to applying your engineering background to the Area Manager role, you likely will not see too much opportunity here directly unless you seek involvement in projects outside the scope of the role. While this sounds like extra work you may not want to put on yourself, it could be a good idea in the longer-term because of the connections you would build with people in a role more relevant to your interests
I currently work night shift, 10:15-6:15am. What I usually do is get off at 6:15, eat a light breakfast if I’m up to it (sometimes I skip) shower & im sleep by 7:30-8am. Wake up around 2-3pm and have the rest of the day to do whatever. I shower at 9pm again to wake me up and that’s about it! It’s not as bad as you think
I would check out the information on this link if you haven't already: www.amazon.jobs/en/jobs/906246/pathways-operations-manager-2020.
@@Grant0669 thanks
I currently work night shift, 10:15-6:15am. What I usually do is get off at 6:15, eat a light breakfast if I’m up to it (sometimes I skip) shower & im sleep by 7:30-8am. Wake up around 2-3pm and have the rest of the day to do whatever. I shower at 9pm again to wake me up and that’s about it! It’s not as bad as you think
That sounds like the schedule I’ve tried doing this week and it has worked well - thank you for the insight!
Hello everyone,
I'll be joining as an Area Manager at Reno, Nevada, from June 2021. Please reach out to me if you're from there or relocating there.
Best of luck!
Hi Grant, what is the process of getting into the pathways program if someone starts as a L4 AM with a Master's degree? Thank you.
I would check out the information on this link if you haven't already: www.amazon.jobs/en/jobs/906246/pathways-operations-manager-2020. Since you have your masters degree (assuming it is in a related field) I would begin conversations with your site leadership on becoming a Pathways. I am unsure as to what the formal process is for going into the program after you are already working as an Area Manager, but I would assume gaining sponsorship can never hurt. It sounds like a fantastic program and I would definitely continue to look into it!
So you work three days at night and the rest are your days off?
For my schedule that is correct. I work Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night and then have Sunday-Wednesday off
Grant Anderson that’s great! I recently got contacted by a recruiter from LinkedIn about this position! Thanks for sharing
@@shemoorepreston1501 Of course!
Hi Grant, Thanks for the videos. I have an interview coming up on the 20th. The second interview is supposed to be a case/situational type. Can you please give some insights on how to prepare for them and what type of questions can be expected? Best -Sahil
Hi Sahil - I recommend reading through every email they send you as they provide you with all the information and resources you need to know to be ready for the content you will cover. They are pretty straightforward with this so just do your part and make sure you read their content and also know your own professional background very well!
@@Grant0669 thanks for the tips. I'll keep this in mind. You are super helpful.
hello , I don’t know how it works for y’all but I’m pretty sure it’s about the same ok so I went to my pre hire appointment and did the drug test and background check ! Passed it but they never sent me a email confirming I passed it I had to contact the Amazon candidate support and my possible start date was this Thursday …and got informed by the all around the world candidate team that it’s no longer available so am I still hired just have to wait for a shift to pop up
Hi Kyra - hopefully someone else on here has been in a similar situation and it able to provide you with guidance
Hey Can I ask questions about the area manager position if you do not mind. A bit of myself is i work in dph1 in philly as a blue badge aiming now for the position and currently studying engineering too. I would like to talk more and since you got experience i want to choose you for advice and as my mentor :) . Thoughts
I would be up for helping you along the way - you can let me know any questions you have
Anyone know how salary in pa is ? Google isn’t helping 😩
I wish I could give input on this but I am not sure!
Hey, is the salary higher for the night shift than the day?
There is no salary adjustment depending on the shift
How long our your shifts ?
Hey! Since I am on RT (that’s what they call the Thursday-Saturday night shift, it means Reduced Time) I will be working 3 12 hour long shifts
Grant Anderson, you got this! Good luck
@@Grant0669 What other types of shifts are there?
@@WWhitneyy01 Sunday-Wednesday days or nights, Wednesday-Saturday days/nights, RT (my shift), and occasionally they have people on donut shifts, which could be something like M,T,Th,F days/nights
