Didn't realize people had an issue with GoW2's Maria. I thought the scene fit Dom's character well. Then again, I read the books and actually enjoyed the story so maybe I'm the exception?
Nahh man it’s perfect, that’s why the old trilogy is superior. It’s dark and gritty the way gears should be. It’s humanity’s last stand and there is no hope.
I read the books after (after as in years later) but it still landed with me a lot coming from a time where I only played shooters with it being a catalyst of me caring more in how the story and characters are written

It feels like the person that wrote this script had a personal bias against that scene, because I’ve never heard anyone NOT compliment that scene.

The only hate I can remember for that scene was someone being butthurt that Dom mercy kills his wife, who was clearly tortured to the point of being pretty much a vegetable or mindless zombie. This was on the Escapists forums, which were a whole mess that would almost give Twitter/X a run for it's cringy money.
Person actually though players should of been forced into a plodding escort mission. Got mad and made claims that "gamers are too lazy to take care of someone," or something like that, when people disagreed.

When I was a kid, the Dom and Maria scene absolutely chocked me, and it hit right in the feels...

Harley killing off the guy who kept sparing her throughout the Arkham series and saying he causes mental and emotional damages like Batman’s the real villain was beyond disrespectful.

I genuinely wonder how much Sweet Baby Inc are responsible for totally insanely outlandish and disrespectful (to both the characters AND the fans) decisions and directions made throughout this game.
I mean she ain't wrong to be fair. All the times he spared his villains, a lot of shocking stuff happened after that. Batman himself is even a victim to that when Joker decides to weaponise Alfred's corpse during the Joker War storyline. I am a big Batman fan, and have read through pretty much every main and else words story there is, but you gotta wonder sometimes how much different and better it would be if Batman actually got rid of his villains...
As a grown 37 year old male, killing Cutie legit traumatized me a bit.

Yeah, I didn't see it as a joke at all. I saw it as a rather long hard look of just how hyper-focused on their own issues both parents were at that point in time that they failed to consider anything else, their child's feelings included.
I mean it's telling about the thought process of the parents but God is it awful

The torture of the stuffed animal was legitimately more painful for me than if it were actually a person. Something about killing innocence or something like that, it just actually was a little disturbing when similar scenes with humans don't bother me at all, it's weird lol
Jeez Far Cry 5. You spend the entire game getting repeatedly captured and escaping. Then somehow the bad guy survives and locks you up with a handcuff around a single wrist.
Seriously - that ending just completely invalidates *everything* you did in the game, and makes all of your actions without any consequence. Would never play a Far Cry game again because of that.🤬
I like Far Cry 5, sure the ending was a little out of place but the overall game is fantastic.

Far cry 5 is so underrated. Put Far Cry New Dawn of the list, sh*t game.
Far cry 5 was garbage. The gameplay was fun but the design of the gameplay and story was terrible.
My wife and I couldn’t believe what we were doing to that elephant. She got upset once the ear tore off and didn’t wanna finish it but I couldn’t do it without her so I muted the sound and that helped her get through it.

LA Noire is an amazing game ... despite the criminal lack of a Jack sequel.
The ending to LA Noire is stupid, Phelps drowns in a sewer and all the corrupt cops get away scott free.

The game will most likely never get a sequel because it's development process was omega hellish.
Long story short, the head was an abusive asshole who kept firing people left and right and forced the existing devs to work overtime without pay for a long time.
The tragedy of Dom and his wife is a great scene.

What the fuck, that scene in Gears 2 was gutwrenching and not out of place at all. I cried like a baby during that scene. It sucked because it was an emotional bullet to the head, not because it was bad.

that Dom is so hopeful to find her and when he finally does, shes a husk of herself is so sad. that point in the original trilogy i think is when Dom loses it and makes his sacrifice in the 3rd game so poignant.
I played It Takes Two with my 10 year old son….when we got to that scene he paused it and said “dad, I don’t want to do this”. We turned it off and talked for a while. We eventually did it but that scene scarred both of us a little.
The Maria scene in Gears of War 2 is brilliant character writing and really drives home just how cold the Locust can be.
That gears of war scene hits deep even as a kid I was like “damn they ain’t have to do the boy like that”😂

That scene in Gears 2 is fine. In fact I like most of the story beats in the first 3 Gears games. Its been a decade and I remember them all and thats a lot more than I can say for a LOT of video games Ive played.
I know nothing about Gears of War and that scene nearly made me tear up. Doesn't seem like it belongs on this list.
Ok I call bullshit on Gears 2 , I love the story and Dom finding his wife got to me. So bs falcon bs.
The gears 2 twist is done masterfully, the quick change between Maria looking fine and then we cut to Dom realizing what happened to his wife, and then having to euthanize her.
It's f*cked up but that's exactly the point, the emotional weight of the scene is immense and it serves as the perfect way to show how far the locust where willing to go
That final fantasy scene was great when i was 6 my mom and everyone else was like wtf was happening and i tried to explain it to them and they thought I was lying and it was just supposed to be comedy
The laughing scene didn't really bother on the first playthroug, honestly. I wasn't moved emotionally or anything, but I just wanted to play more blitzball

@@supermathv3yeah. That game has been buggy as hell and incomplete on launch. It’s still buggy and they are still having to add things to finish it. I enjoyed but I wish I had waited to complete it.

I never knew anyone had issue with Dom finding Maria. I thought it was tremendously sad and makes Dom even more likeable as you see him display emotion.
Why are Gears, ITT and Bioshock here? They are dark, but I hear for the first time that they suck.
The laughing scene from final fantasy 10 made me laugh as well right now at how bad it is just looking back at that very scene
The ending to BaS is really uncomfortable, but it's kind of powerful, because Elizabeth had lost all she had worth living for... but had found something worth dying for.
She knew her actions would lead to Bioshock. She went back in powerless, regretting what she did to Sally. She went back in to die. Knowing this would happen. She knew her actions could lead to Jack saving the little sisters, and the actions of Eleanor etc. She died to ensure some of them could be saved. It's poetic, in its awfulness.
There's a lot of scenes highlighting this, including the crushing scene in the lift where Elizabeth asks her mind's version of Booker to humour her, as she has no-one else. It's brutally depressing, but there's light at the end... somewhere.

Couple quick clarifications/corrections:
With Burial at Sea Elizabeth doesn't die from being lobotomised. Atlas does torture her and go through the process, but stops once he gets additional info out of Elizabeth and sends her to retrieve it. He does end up killing her with a crowbar when she returns however (still upsetting).
In DmC DMC, you fight Lilith's fetus before the sniper rifle scene. So Vergil's "plan (B?)" actually works exactly as he intended it to. Honestly the nicest thing about that game is that its failure partially willed DMC 5 into existence.

I always hated the scene in Mgsv where you sit in the back of the truck with Skull face and are forced to listen to the games main theme for the entire 4 minute drive. All the while, no dialogue is happening.

The thing with the DMC sniper rifle abortion scene is that they made the Demon woman & her husband look way to human. So much that we actually start to sympathize with them because the Demon parents were really scared for their baby's life. Even the Devil may cry.
I still like the FFX laugh scene, do think most people don't know the context and it is important. That said ti was early 2000s VA and it does sound really goofy, I get why it's a meme and use it as a meme as well. It's funny

That scene in Other M is so stupid on so many levels. Samus is taken out in one hit, with a standard pistol. What? How? Adam intuits that these Metroids PROBABLY don't have a weakness to ice. How does he know this? He just guesses it. The Metroid he kills in that room still had its weakness to ice, but the ones behind the door are TOTALLY different. And they expect us to feel something from his sacrifice, despite giving us no reason to care about him. Seriously, so many levels of brain dead idiocy in one cutscene. It's amazing.
GoW 2 was excellent writing and was gut wrenching at the time. It's not very often I disagree with you but I have to on that one

Final Fantasy X is most definitely not one of the first fully voice acted video games. Full voice acting had already been around for several years before it came out.
I edited the it takes 2 queen elephant sequence with the original GOW theme because that entire scene reminded me of how krotos would approach the gods like Hermes and Poseidon for example

Man I played that first game with my kids who are 6 and 7 years old. And damn I felt so bad letting them see that torture of the stuffed animal. We love that game and they had so much fun playing it together, but that scene was a bit too far I have to admit. Geez.

I’m surprised that particular scene from Other M isn’t here. But then again maybe we as a society have grown since 2010 when it comes to mental health issues, so this could be a good thing.

The last fight with Abby was so uncomfortable. I threw my controller down and said I’m not finishing this. Of course I picked it back up and did.
Even on the script it said that Tidus Laugh was awkward, so i don't think that sucked xd. Also, Gears of War games ARE MEANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. Cole is comic relief and stuff and they try to enjoy some of the massacre, but all the series is just a gritty war story with a lot of F up stuff (even the comics have this vibe)

Gotta call ya out on the Gears scene. Dom searched for Maria for 10 damn years, gone from one stranded camp to another, and another, and another, and he finally got his closure. Certainly not the best or even a good one, but a closure still.
the opening of Sonic 3 on the Mega Drive/Genesis kind of got me, firstly Knuckles is able to overpower Super Sonic without much apparent effort and make him drop all the emeralds, then Sonic just stands there as Knuckles grabs the emeralds. Sonic even goes into his impatient idle animation, like it's the player's fault!
What about epic scenes for bosses. I'll start: Malenia. Her speech while she grabs her helmet, arm and sword always gets me the chills
I think LA Noir is impressive looking because of the time it came out. Those facial animations were next level then. Still don’t look horrible. It’s not like trying to play an old PS2 game with raggedy polygon graphics and controls.
Personally I though the ending of Burial at sea pt. 2 was awesome. Don't get me wrong, I did hate it, but it felt like a fitting end, with one last mindfuck.
Couldn't agree more about number one, it was the complete opposite of Vergil's character, he was essentially like f*** honor!
5:03 Ghosts had an overall confusing lack of consequences while also putting characters through life changing injuries, like in the Vegas mission a character says his ribs are broken yet he can run and gun perfectly fine and there's not even a scripted moment of him needing like a 30 second break or anything.
That gears of war scene really fucked me up as a kid . So good

And DmC Devil May Cry was a banger of a game, the sniper scene was cool af to raise the tensions between the main characters and Mundus (and show how unhinged Vergil is behind the cool guy facade) and I will die on that hill. Vergil could have used a summoned sword instead of a rifle, tho.
Why was there footage of Baldur's Gate 3 in this when it wasn't talked about at all? I don't think there are any bad scenes in that game, so why have the footage in there to begin with?
